December 14, 2014 Third Sunday of Advent Page Four YEAR OF CONSECRATED LIFE NOVEMBER 29, 2014 FEBRUARY 2, 2016 Pope Francis proclaimed 2015 a Year of Consecrated Life, star ng on the First Sunday of Advent, the weekend of November 29, 2014, and ending on February 2, 2016, the World Day of Consecrated life. The year also marks the 50th anniversary of Perfectae Carita s, a decree on religious life, and Lumen Gen um, the Second Va can Council s cons tu on on the Church. Its purpose, as stated by the Va can is to make a grateful remembrance of the recent past while embracing the future with hope. (Va can Radio) The Prefect of the Congrega on for Ins tutes of Consecrated Life and Socie es of Apostolic Life, Cardinal João Braz De Aviz held a press conference on Friday to announce the upcoming Year of Consecrated Life. At the press conference, Cardinal Braz de Aviz told journalists that Pope Francis had announced the Year of Consecrated life in November at a mee ng with the Union of Superiors General. No ng that the Year will take place in the context of the 50th anniversary of the Second Va can Council, Cardinal Braz de Aviz said, We believe that the Council has been a breath of the Spirit not only for the whole Church but, perhaps especially, for the consecrated life. We are also convinced that in these 50 years consecrated life has undertaken a frui ul journey of renewal not free, certainly, of difficul es and hardships in the commitment to follow what the Council asked of the consecrated: fidelity to the Lord, to the Church, to their own charism and to the people of today. For this reason, he said, the first objec ve of the Year of Consecrated Life would be to make a grateful remembrance of the recent past. With this posi ve outlook on the past, he con nued, we want to embrace the future with hope the second objec ve. Although the crises that affect the world and the Church are also felt within consecrated life, Cardinal Braz de Aviz said women and men religious remain full of hope, based not on their own powers, but on trust in the Lord. In Him, he said, no one can rob us of our hope. This hope, though, he said, cannot keep us from living the present with passion and this is the third objec ve of the coming Year. This passion, the Cardinal said, speaks of being in love, of true friendship, of profound communion. This is the true beauty of the life of so many women who profess the evangelical counsels and follow Christ more closely in this state of life. In this regard, he said, the Year of Consecrated Life will have an evangelical focus, helping people to realize the beauty of following Christ in the various types of religious voca ons. The Year of Consecrated Life is expected to begin in October of this year, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the promulga on of Lumen gen um (the Second Va can Council s cons tu on on the Church), which has a specific chapter dealing with consecrated life. The anniversary of the Council s decree Perfectae carita s, will be the occasion of the close of the Year, in November 2015.

THANKSGIVING 2014 If you stopped in at the convent on Wednesday, November 26 th, you would have found, Michael cooking 2 Turkeys (of the 6 from the Ushers Club) in the kitchen. And while that was going on, Fred, at home, was cooking a Turkey (1 of 8 donated by Andrea and our school teachers) and 3 Turkey breasts from Market Day. The pumpkin pies (20 of them) were there from Bob and Cathy and all the fruit (apples, pears and oranges) had been delivered by Ed from our Knights of Columbus. All the other foods (stuffing mixes, cans of corn, stringbeans, gravy, sweet potatoes, cranberries and olives) were dona- ons from our school children. We were going to prepare 70 dinners to families and our homebound parishioners. On Thanksgiving Day, all of our volunteers (Andrea, Alex, Brendan, Christopher, Dawn, Erin, Isabel, Jen, Laura, Lore a, Lo e, Marcey, Michael, Pa, Sloan and Violet) started the day with a prayer. We heated the turkey, cooked all the vegetables (potatoes from Jerry and stuffing made by Andrea) bagged all the fruit, cut up the pies and packed all the containers (from Pat and Rich) in boxes ready to be delivered. Our delivery team came and all the meals were delivered. The remaining turkeys from Andrea, our teachers and our Ushers, were given to families of St. Ferdinand along with a pumpkin/apple pie from Pa with Market Day s Pennies for Pies from our school children. Our Boy and Girl Scouts prepared and delivered food baskets (complete with holiday and every day foods) to 3 families. And COR has its angels..jim and Janine and Joanna..so many thanks to you. God bless you. And to you all..our volunteers, our Ushers and Knights, our Scouts, our principal and teachers and all our friends, a million Thank Yous for your gi s, your me and talents, your caring and sharing, God has blessed COR with you. December 14, 2014 Third Sunday of Advent Page Thirteen Thanks to some soon-to-expire frequent flier miles I d saved up that got us to-and-from with nothing out of our pockets, my wife and I celebrated our 33rd wedding anniversary in San Antonio not long ago. It was overcast when we arrived on Friday, but mild, and given the 8 we le behind, we didn t mind the gray Texas sky. Several people told us before we le Chicago that we d enjoy the River Walk, a series of restaurants and shops along the San Antonio River, and we did. But I enjoyed just as much our me at a loca on a bit more removed from the River Walk hot-spot: San Fernando Cathedral. Which is not to say that the cathedral is tourist-free. On the contrary, I suspect we saw plenty of visitors there on our first night as we enjoyed San Antonio The Saga, a colorful, musical, historical review of the Alamo City splashed over the exterior façade of the cathedral. According to an on-line edi on of the San Antonio Express-News, the 24-minute projec on is the brainchild of a French ar st and has the blessing of the Archdiocese of San Antonio, and as one San Antonio resident quoted in the ar cle explains, It s absolutely beau ful. I encourage everyone to come down to the plaza and bring their families for something very special. Agreed. Gail and I returned to the cathedral the next day for the 5:00 PM Mass, but this me, I sensed that I was surrounded by locals. I say this because they all seemed more comfortable with the Spanish lyrics of the songs than I did. Reynolds (john@jrwrites.com) St. Ferdinand Parish though--ma hew s Last Judgment scene--just fine, and the priest who gave the homily reminded us that when we meet our God face-to-face, we will not be judged on the cars we drive or the houses we live in, but on how well we love. Specifically, he said, we ll be judged on how a en ve we are to the needs of God s own. Perhaps this is why I s ll recall the sign I saw posted in the Cathedral: Confessions next to the gi shop Even though it was the weekend before Thanksgiving, San Antonio had plenty of lighted Christmas trees on display. And as the holiday shopping season seems to start earlier every year, we saw there--as we saw here before we le --sales everywhere. So many gi s to buy, a er all. How appropriate, then, that the Sacrament of Reconcilia on was being offered just outside the church next to the cathedral gi shop. As I ve said before in this space, I m no theologian, but if our Lord s greatest gi to us is his own body and blood--his own dying and rising to jus fy us before the Father-- then surely his second greatest gi to us is this sacrament that brings us blameless again before the Father when we fall short in our call to discipleship, in our call to care for one another. We re all busy as we come into this final full week before Christmas. Like I said: we ve so many gi s to buy. But as a small hand-wri en sign in San Fernando Cathedral implies merely by associa on, Confession is a gi, too. We give presents to others at Christmas. As we con nue our prepara ons to receive the Christ, let us not be forge ul--or too busy--to gi ourselves.
