OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, KING OF THE UNIVERSE November 23, 2014 I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink - Matthew 25:35 THE LORD S FLOCK Sheep are high-maintenance animals. They are not very intelligent. Without guidance and care, especially in a climate like Israel s, they would die quickly from predators, starvation, or just their own slowness. The scriptural image of us as the Lord s flock is not terribly flattering to us, since it is only the neverending diligence of a watchful shepherd that allows the flock to survive. The feast of Christ the King was intended to call the world back to Christ as the sole power of the world of the early twentieth century. It is fitting that, as we celebrate Christ the King, we hear about Christ the Shepherd who cares for us and who, likewise, will be there at the end of time. Interestingly enough, as the Gospel illustrates, our own destiny is determined by the way we have been shepherds to the rest of the flock. The second collection this weekend is for The Catholic Campaign for Human Development. SOLEMNITY OF CHRIST THE KING This Sunday, November 23rd we celebrate the Solemnity of Christ the King and the last Sunday of the liturgical year. Please join us for the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament after the 11:00am Mass and for the conclusion with special devotions at 3:00pm. This special day provides us an opportunity to spend a few minutes before the Blessed Sacrament in a spirit of gratitude for received graces. We ask parish organizations to attend at their designated times (see last week s bulletin) and parishioners to participate anytime, but especially at the 3:00pm devotions and the praying of the Divine Mercy Chaplet. THANK YOU We are thankful for all parishioners and friends who attended our Thanksgiving Dinner last Saturday. The scrumptious meal was prepared by Chef Clem Starosta and served by members of the Parish Council and many dedicated volunteers. Special thanks to those who supported this event with donations and gifts, filled our pastry table with delicious treats and gathered in the spirit of solidarity and common purpose in a mutual effort to serve God and one another. Page 3 NOVENA AND DEVOTION TO ST. JOSEPH Please join us on Wednesday, November 26th at 7:00pm for our continuing Novena and Devotion to St. Joseph asking for his powerful aid for the Church. This week members of the St. Joseph Polish Women s Club will process with the statue of St. Joseph from the Chapel of Our Lady of Czestochowa to the Sanctuary. We are grateful for your offerings and encourage you to share your true faith in the power of prayer through the intercession of our Patron. THANKSGIVING DAY On Thursday, November 27th, we observe a special day of Thanksgiving throughout the nation. It is the time to thank God for all blessings received during the year and share the day with family members and friends. It is appropriate and desirable to come to church for the 6:30 or 8:00am Mass in thanksgiving for many gifts received. We extend a joyful, blessed and happy family day to all our parishioners visitors and the parish staff. In observance of Thanksgiving Day, the rectory office will be closed on Thurs., Nov. 27 and Fri., Nov. 28th. PARISH GATHERING With the Advent and Christmas seasons approaching we would like to invite parishioners who suffered the loss of a loved one, were recently divorced, who do not have family nearby, or are newly registered to our parish to a reception on Sunday, December 14th after 9:30am Mass in the school cafeteria. This is a joyful time of the year when we should remind everyone that we are all gifts of God and we should support each other. A TRADITION TO PONDER Christmas and year-end giving is not only a Catholic tradition but Christmas marks the beginning of the Ultimate Gift - God s gift of His only son, Jesus Christ. Christmas of course, celebrates the birth of our savior, Jesus Christ. Tradition holds that the three kings or wise men followed the star to bring gifts to the newborn king, beginning a custom of gift giving to the Christmas season we enjoy each year. But what about gifts that God has bestowed upon each and every one of us during the year and throughout our lifetimes? We are merely stewards of these gifts. Christmas and year s end is a spiritual opportunity to make a return to God and offer Him ourselves or material gifts for His Church. Practically speaking you could consider the following: Make Jesus the focal point of Christmas by participating in Divine Worship - Offer a gift to Jesus which is a sign of your faith and represents the amount you give during the month - Consult with your accountant regarding donations to charities such as church, school, gym to take advantage of tax law opportunities. OLD GYM IN PRESENT SCHOOL-is still being used for a variety of activities; cheerleading practices, tennis program, after school meetings with Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, parish dinners, bingo, etc. For years we have had deteriorating and pealing of the outside wall from the Whitcomb Street side due to moisture. A variety of actions have been taken by scraping the loose material, painting, drying, etc., but the problem persisted. The wall has been painted over and over with little success. To permanently solve this occurring problem we would have to excavate the soil outside to the foundation, and put in insulation which is cost prohibitive. Since we had some marble left over after the renovation of our Church in storage at the cemetery which we had no use for and occupied needed space, we decided to use the marble in the old gym. It provides safety, provides an esthetic look and saves us money instead of paying for new wood. With the new gym and cafeteria the old gym will still be used for specific purposes. ST. JOSEPH POLISH WOMEN S CLUB The Annual Christmas party will be held on Tuesday, December 9th at the PAV. Cocktails at 6:00pm and dinner at 6:30pm. (Mt 25, 35) Liturgia słowa przedstawia dzisiaj trzy szczególne aspekty władzy królewskiej Chrystusa. Drugie czytanie jasno określa Jego władzę królewską nad grzechem i śmiercią. Chrystus umarły i zmartwychwstały dla zbawienia ludzkości jest pierwocinami tych, którzy uwierzyli w Niego i kiedyś zmartwychwstaną do życia wiecznego. Istotnie, jak w Adamie wszyscy umierają z powodu grzechu, tak też w Chrystusie wszyscy będą ożywieni dzięki Jego zmartwychwstaniu. Zwycięstwo nad śmiercią ostatnim nieprzyjacielem Chrystusa uwieńczy dzieło zbawienia; a przy końcu czasu, kiedy umarli powstaną, Chrystus będzie mógł oddać Ojcu Królestwo, jakie zdobył, królestwo zmartwychwstałych, którzy będą śpiewać na wieki chwałę Boga życia.
