The monumental suffering of a good man is so horrific that the laments of the front page of modern newspapers barely measure up. The whole story is not long to tell, but its resolution is of great comfort. We can trace in its plot the stirrings of a belief in an afterlife, and in God s great power to right every wrong and raise human beings from suffering. In the Gospel, we see the fulfillment of these longings in the hand of Jesus, grasping an ill woman by the hand and raising her up to vibrant life. Peter s motherin-law becomes her best self, attentive to her guests, providing hospitality, the warmth of her laughter, the delights of her kitchen. Last week, at Candlemas, candles were blessed, including baptismal candles for some not yet born. Today is a day to check the fragile flame of your own baptismal candle. Against February s customary lethargy, its background whines and ailments, the liturgy summons us to life, grasps us by the hand, and sends us to serve in Christ s name. Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.

February 9, 2003 Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Three Dear Young People and Adults who care about them, After much discussion, it is apparent that we need to offer the opportunity for young people in our parish community to have some experience of Teen Ministry. Some believe the need is already being met at the high school and through other family sources. This is an attempt to address the issue at this particular juncture. It has been a while since the leadership of St. Ferdinand reached out to high school age youth with the gifts of its blessings. Our Teen Ministry will be modest at the beginning, but there is a hope that St.Ferdinand could provide a consistent effort capable of fostering relationship for the teens to our parish, and as a gateway to deeper understating and participation in our faith. We know from experience, a recipe for success of these kinds of programs is a broad base of adult leadership to best communicate with and serve the youth. We will have our first Welcome and Open Gym on February 9th at 3:00 p.m. for high school teens. The day s events will conclude shortly before 5:00 p.m. when the gym is being used for other activities. We are in an evolving process and there will be the necessary growing pains and changes, but through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, we will have life and some fun along the way. If you are interested, as a leader or a teen, just show up, or give me a call at 622/3022 ext 366. Your concerns and suggestions are always welcome. In His praise, Joseph Kummer Director of Religious Education As members of the parish faith community, it is our responsibility to remember both in concrete and spiritual ways those who cannot celebrate with us each week because they are ill. Those who are sick in turn, remember all of us daily in their prayers and in their sufferings. We experience many blessings because of their remembering us. And so... please remember in your prayers: Joseph Balicki Timothy Benson Albin Bilinski Frank Bisceglie Stephanie Bosco Gabriella Bragagnolo Alba Jennie Burroughs Benito Cabanin Claudio Clemente Bishop Edwin Conway Anna Diks Lillian Dziedzic Joseph Gagliano Fatima Gomez Rocco Greco Mary Hain Judith Hodolitz Mary Ann Johansen Catherine Keeler Stanley Kochniarczyk Helen Kosirog Tad Koziol James Lamberti Sam LoDolce Netta Lohrmann Eleanor Loscuito Elizabeth Ann Maher Susan Maher Francesco Mangialardo Mary Martin Estelle Toots McGuigan Emilia Moreno Steven Mosinski Dan Oliver, Jr. Timothy Rajski Sophie Regner Alicia Schippits Infant Cameron Scott Lenore Simzyk Estelle Stybur Minerva Watson Anne Wickman Bruno Wojcik Bulletin reminder: All notices for the February 16th bulletin need to be in the rectory no later than 9 a.m. on Monday, February 10th. Our Financial Support of St. Ferdinand Parish Last Sunday, the first weekend of the month, our collective stewardship of the parish totaled $15,466.15, surpassing our weekly goal for the first time in six weeks. Thank you very much for your generous support of our parish s mission and many ministries. Your commitment to St. Ferdinand Church is greatly appreciated. Last week I mentioned that we were completing our six month financial report for the Archdiocese. This is an important report because it not only details our income and expenses as of December 31 st, but it also encourages us to take note of two key comparisons: how are we doing financially compared to our budget projections as well as to our actual experience at the same time one year ago. As one might expect, given the economy and the number of times we have not met our Sunday goal, the report reveals a number of concerns. We all know from our budgets at home that expenses increase from year to year, and the Church is no different. While we have kept our expenses below budget for the first six months, our costs have increased 4.5% over last year. Our Church income is down significantly from last year. After making an adjust from the Sharing Christ s Gifts Campaign to cover the income we would have received from the Fall Subscription, our income is nearly 6% below budget overall, and down over 10% from December 31 st, 2001. In order for the Church to be proper stewards of all that you entrust to us, this information is very important to us for the upcoming months and as we prepare next year s budget. Daniel P. Page Six Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 9, 2003 Ojciec œwiêty Jan Pawe³ II wzywa nas wszystkich do modlitwy w intencji pokoju. Proponuje on aby wzi¹æ do rêki ró aniec i za poœrednictwem Maryi prosiæ o pokój. Papie do³¹czy³ do trzech czêœci Ró añca jeszcze jedn¹ - Czêœæ Œwiat³a. Pierwsza tajemnica œwiat³a : Chrzest Jezusa w Jordanie A gdy Jezus zosta³ ochrzczony, wyszed³ natychmiast z wody. Jezus przyszed³ do Jana, by otrzymaæ chrzest, wype³niaj¹c wolê Ojca (My 3,14). Wszed³ pokornie miêdzy grzeszników jako niewinny Baranek Bo y, który wzi¹³ na siebie grzechy œwiata (J 1, 29.36). Przypominaj¹c chrzest w Jordanie, Jezus zosta³ niejako ukoronowany zst¹pieniem Ducha Œwiêtego pod postaci¹ go³êbicy, który powo³a³ Go do przysz³ej misji, a g³os Ojca uroczyœcie proklamowa³ Go Synem umi³owanym. Chrzest Chrystusa by³ te zapowiedzi¹ naszego chrztu, chrztu wiernych, który odpuszcza grzechy, daje nadprzyrodzone ycie, czyni przybranymi dzieæmi Bo ymi, w³¹cza w Koœció³ œwiêty, daje udzia³ w kap³añstwie Chrystusa i daje dary Ducha Œwiêtego (dz 2,38). Pierwsi chrzeœcijanie nazywali chrzest sakramentem oœwiecenia, a ochrzczonych dzieæmi œwiat³oœci. Komitet Przyjació³ Parafii B³. Karoliny w Tarnowie wraz z Ks. February 9, 2003 Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Nine We all know the devotion our Holy Father has for the Rosary. He, himself, proclaims the many graces he has received from the Blessed Virgin through the Rosary. In his Apostolic Letter Rosarium Virginis Mariae, our Holy Father proclaimed a Year of the Rosary. The Year extends from October, 2002 until October, 2003. Our Holy Father implores us to pray for peace and for the family. A number of historical circumstances also make a revival of the Rosary quite timely. First of all, the need to implore from God the gift of peace. The Rosary has many times been proposed by my predecessors and myself as a prayer for peace. At the start of a millennium which began with the terrifying attacks of 11 September 2001, a millennium which witnesses every day innumerous parts of the world fresh scenes of bloodshed and violence, to rediscover the Rosary means to immerse oneself in contemplation of the mystery of Christ who "is our peace", since he made "the two of us one, and broke down the dividing wall of hostility" (Eph 2:14). Consequently, one cannot recite the Rosary without feeling caught up in a clear commitment to advancing peace, especially in the land of Jesus, still so sorely afflicted and so close to the heart of every Christian. A similar need for commitment and prayer arises in relation to another critical contemporary issue: the family, the Support Staff Mrs. Aneta Koæma, Administrative Assistant Mrs. Wendy L. Braunsdorf, Communications Coordinator Mrs. Lu Caravette, Sr. Gracjana Ziêba, Receptionist/Secretary Robert Diaz, Ricky Salgado, Evening Receptionist Liturgical: Mr. Andrew Warzocha, Director of Music and Liturgy Mrs. Betty Hotcaveg, Lector Coordinator Deacon Irv Hotcaveg, Coordinator of Eucharistic Ministers & Ministers of Care Ms. Jane Lohrmann, Scheduler of Ministers of Care to the Homebound Parish Council Ralph Barnhart - President, Mary Bucaro, Terri Calcitrai, Sophie Kass, Ken Presslak, Andrew Warzocha. Rev. David J. Cortesi and Daniel P. Costigan, ex officio. Pray the Rosary ~ Pray for Peace St. Ferdinand Parish primary cell of society, increasingly menaced by forces of disintegration on both the ideological and practical planes, so as to make us fear for the future of this fundamental and indispensable institution and, with it, for the future of society as a whole. The revival of the Rosary in Christian families, within the context of a broader pastoral ministry to the family, will be an effective aid to countering the devastating effects of this crisis typical of our age. The Rosary, precisely because it starts with Mary's own experience, is an exquisitely contemplative prayer. Without this contemplative dimension, it would lose its meaning, as Pope Paul VI clearly pointed out: "Without contemplation, the Rosary is a body without a soul, and its recitation runs the risk of becoming a mechanical repetition of formulas, in violation of the admonition of Christ: 'In praying do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do; for they think they will be heard for their many words' (Mt 6:7). By its nature the recitation of the Rosary calls for a quiet rhythm and a lingering pace, helping the individual to meditate on the mysteries of the Lord's life as seen through the eyes of her who was closest to the Lord. In this way the unfathomable riches of these mysteries are disclosed". (New- Mysteries of Light added to our Rosary see this space next week.)
