Dear Parishioners and Friends, The Feast of the Ascension is a day on which we look up to heaven. We try to see if it really exists. Very often we are like the apostles, who, in the First Reading, are looking up at the sky, still not believing that Jesus had really disappeared from their sight. Ascension day describes what it means to be a Christian very well. Why? Because, very often, we ask: how do we reconcile the matter of God and earthly affairs. Is there really a conflict? someone asked: But, I have a job, I have to work hard because of my family. So, I don t have time to pray. I m so busy so tired In his spiritual work, Fioleta, St. Francis de Sales left us with one of the best answers to these problems. He wrote that each of us can live our life and that this life can be holy. Also, he wrote that it is obvious that someone who has a family must care for it and cannot live like a monk. While someone who has devoted his life to God can t live only with the issues of the world, so each of us has his personal path to holiness. And on this path, he can be a Christian. That is what the Ascension is telling us. A Christian is someone who is down on earth but is also aware that life does not end with death. Therefore, he continues to look up. Despite the variety of jobs, things we need to do, we can find time for even a short prayer. Men of Galilee, why are you standing there looking at the sky? This Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven will return in the same way as you have seen him going into heaven. We now look up to heaven, looking for Jesus, and he still assures us: I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. With grateful remembrance in prayer, Fr. Jacek Wrona, Pastor Drodzy Parafianie i Przyjaciele, Wniebowstąpienie jest świętem, w którym spoglądamy w niebo. Próbujemy zobaczyć czy ono naprawdę istnieje. Bardzo często jesteśmy podobni do Apostołów patrzących w niebo, jeszcze wciąż nie wierzących, że Jezus naprawdę zniknął im z oczu. Dzisiejszy dzień bardzo dobrze opisuje nam co to znaczy być chrześcijaninem. Dlaczego? Ponieważ bardzo często pytamy: jak pogodzić sprawy Boga ze sprawami ziemskimi. Czy naprawdę istnieje taki konflikt? Ktoś spytał: Przecież mam pracę, muszę utrzymać rodzinę, kiedy mam się modlić? Jestem tak bardzo zajęty, tak bardzo zmęczony Jedną z najlepszych odpowiedzi pozostawił św. Franciszek Salezy w swoim duchowym dziele Filotea. Napisał, że każdy z nas żyjąc swoim życiem może tym właśnie życiem się uświęcić. I jest oczywiste, że ktoś kto ma rodzinę, musi się o nią troszczyć i nie może żyć jak zakonnik. Natomiast ktoś kto poświęcił Bogu swoje życie nie może żyć tylko sprawami świata. Tak więc każdy z nas ma sowją drogę do świętości i na tej drodze może być chrześcijaninem. I o tym właśnie mówi święto Wniebowstąpienia. Chrześcijanin to człowiek twardo chodzący po ziemi, ale równocześnie świadomy tego, że to życie nie kończy się wraz ze śmiercią i dlatego patrzymy w niebo. Dlatego mimo różnych zajęć, pracy, spraw musimy i możemy znaleźć czas na chociaż krótką modlitwę, spotkanie z Bogiem. Mężowie z Galilei, dlaczego stoicie i wpatrujecie się w niebo? Ten Jezus, wzięty od was do nieba, przyjdzie tak samo, jak widzieliście Go wstępującego do nieba. THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE ASCENSION The theological unity, or perhaps even the temporal experience of the early community, made it seem that Jesus resurrection and his ascension were inseparable aspects of a single mystery. Only in the later writings of Luke and John has further theological reflection helped the Christian community to distinguish different dimensions of the mystery. Liturgical tradition has followed the fortyday chronology formulated by Luke. We would miss the point, however, if we were to demand a precise historical chronology of events such as the Resurrection-Ascension that are primarily spiritual in nature and that clearly surpass the bounds of time and space as we know them. What is important for us to grasp is the significance of the Ascension. For Luke, it is the decisive turning point that marks the end of Jesus earthly ministry and the beginning of the disciples Spirit-led ministry and thus the ministry of the whole church down to our own day. Office of the Archbishop Post Office Box 1979 Chicago, Illinois 60690-1979 May 14, 2012 Dear Catholics of the Archdiocese of Chicago, Because public discussion of the Department of Health and Human Services interpretation of the requirements of the health care reform legislation will remain a matter of public debate, I would like to pinpoint the Catholic Bishops concerns. They are two: 1) government infringement on religious liberty; and 2) restrictions on freedom of conscience. 1) Religious liberty means that all religions are free to identify and control their own ministries, without interference from the government. The institutional names of our public ministries are well known; for example, there are Catholic universities (like Loyola, DePaul and others) and schools (like St. Ignatius, Marian, Fenwick and other). There are Catholic hospitals and health care centers (like Resurrection, St. Anthony s St. Bernard and others). There are Catholic social service agencies (like Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese) and child welfare institutions (like Misericordia, Mercy Home, Marillac House and many others). Under the HHS regulations, none of these institutions is Catholic. The government has unilaterally decide that it has the right to determine what is Catholic (or Jewish or Muslim) and what is not. Religious ministries are reduced to public services, with their identity changed by government edict. This is a novel intrusion of the government into the internal life of the Church and other religious organizations. It is a First Amendment issue and will eventually be decided by the courts. 2) Freedom of conscience means that neither an institution nor an individual should be coerced by the government into doing or paying for an action they believe to be immoral. Conscience had previously been protected in federal health care legislation by the Hyde, Church and Weldon amendments. These legal protections have been removed from the health care law, and freedom of conscience has been restricted. This is a policy issue and will probably be decided by either legislative or executive action. It will take time to decide these issues, and the public debate will be acrimonious. In an election year, it will be hard to avoid partisanship; but religious liberty and freedom of conscience are issues that should be bigger than politics. I hope these few comments are helpful to a better understanding of what is at stake in the disputed HHS mandate. Uroczystość Wniebowstąpienia Pańskiego. Wniebowstąpienie jest dniem królewskiej intronizacji Chrystusa, tryumfem, jaki przygotowuje swojemu Synowi Bóg Ojciec. Stąd wiele radości w tekstach liturgicznych. Jest ono też poręczeniem powtórnego przyjścia Chrystusa: "Ten Jezus, wzięty od was do nieba, przyjdzie tak samo, jak widzieliście Go wstępującego do nieba" (Dz 1, 11). Chrystus powróci dla ostatecznego tryumfu dobra: powróci, by oddać swemu Ojcu wszystko, by zgromadzić wszystkich i wszystko w Kościele. Wniebowstąpienie jest nie tylko ostatecznym i uroczystym wywyższeniem Jezusa z Nazaretu, ale również zadatkiem i gwarancją wywyższenia, wyniesienia do chwały natury ludzkiej. Nasza wiara i nadzieja chrześcijan zostają dzisiaj umocnione i utwierdzone, bowiem jesteśmy zaproszeni nie tylko do tego, by rozważać własną małość, słabość i ubóstwo, ale także ową przemianę wspanialszą aniżeli samo dzieło stworzenia, "przemianę", której Chrystus w nas dokonuje wówczas, kiedy jesteśmy z Nim zjednoczeni dzięki łasce i sakramentom. Warto podkreślić, że Pan Jezus wstąpił do nieba nie sam, ale wziął ze sobą wszystkie dusze świętych z otchłani. W czasie rozłąki z ciałem przed swoim zmartwychwstaniem odwiedził je w otchłani i zapowiedział im rychłe wybawienie. Dzisiaj spełnia obietnicę i tryumfalnie wprowadza je do nieba. Ten dzień jest więc ważnym wydarzeniem dla całego rodzaju ludzkiego. Miejsce zbuntowanych aniołów zajmują w niebie dusze ludzkie, aby na końcu świata mogły wejść także do chwały ich uwielbione ciała.
