Trees stood there silently while He prayed and endured the Agony preceding His death. Two millenia passed but trees in another distant garden witnessed another such phenomenon this time not in Jerusalem, but in a remote village in what is now Western Russia. Jesus was not the victim per se, although belief in Him qualified the victims of the atheistic henchmen of Joseph Stalin. For decades the Gethsemane known as Katyń (a comparison trumpeted by my friend Msgr. Zdzisław Peszkowski, himself a survivor of that tragedy) survived in history despite denials and cover-ups by the Soviets, then the Russians. The historical facts refused to be hidden away as long as survivors and witnesses and memories remained. The trees could not speak in 1940 and the truth was unable to be buried beneath their roots. The truth cried to be heard and the blood of the murdered Poles would slowly be recognized. Seventy years later Gethsemane was to be revisited, feeding the earth with human blood and tears yet one more time. Perhaps it would be the final casualty of World War II which history books mistakenly tend to teach ended in Europe in 1945. Poles know better. They wanted to believe it ended in 1989, but in their hearts knew that the great War would not end until the trees of Katyń, Poland s Gethsemane, said it was over. Now the trees may have been heard around the world as never before. Perhaps the tragedy which occurred last Saturday morning was the only way for the truth to surface. Perhaps the trees simply had enough of all the lies and deception. The national sacrifice the trees ultimately embraced with their branches may enable the truth and the apologies to finally come to pass. What a price!!! At this Sunday s evening Mass to commemorate the victims of the recent tragedy we will see the Polish flag proudly carried down the aisle as Chopin s Funeral March is played. Note that the flagpole is made of wood from a tree perhaps a tree from another garden that witnessed atrocities. Or perhaps the tree which forms the pole had a peaceful life. Perhaps that tree was born and raised in peace. Or perhaps the tree had a life similar to the tree which bore Christ as He sacrificed His life for us. While not as noble a load as Christ, this tree bears the flag which represents still noble ideas, a flag which was carried through battlefields for your freedom and ours (za naszą i waszą wolność). That flag embodies the ideals and dreams of so many generations of our ancestors, its white top embracing those dreams just as its red bottom is soaked with the blood of those who fought that those dreams might be realized. The tree grew somewhere in earth s vast Gethsemene now to support the white and red standard of our ancestors and all Poles living and breathing and dreaming anew. Proudly it will make its way down the aisle to a place of honor, the tree itself trembling from grief as the hands of its bearer strongly embrace it. The tree will enable the flag to be raised high to the heavens as a tree reaching for the skies in the garden of Gethsemane. The tree will weep as the Polish nation weeps and the flag will courageously wipe away their tears, guided by the hands of Matka Boska Kozielska who already embraced the thousands shot by the murderers. The tree which holds up the flag now holds up all the spirits of those who perished. It has become their cross. The children of Polonia stand mourning in the shadow of the flag now asked to assume the care of the motherland as John was asked to care for the Mother of Jesus. The tree is a witness again. PASTORAL MESSAGE January 3 Stycznia 2010 Thanks be to God! It has been fifty years since I was ordained to the priesthood within the Franciscan Order at Christ the King Seminary in West Chicago on February 2nd, 1960. I had the privilege of celebrating my First Mass here at St. Stanislaus Church. The priesthood is a privilege and an honor, a special gift from God given to the Church, for the benefit of the Faithful. It is never regarded as a right of an individual. Thanks be to God for this special blessing. I can t help but think of, and thank, my wonder parents of eight children Frank and Mary for their deep faith, and their strong commitment to the Catholic Faith and Church. They encouraged and blessed me, and my older brother, Fr. Howard, as we pondered and pursued the religious priesthood. Two priests from a family of eight isn t too bad. I revere the happy memory of my older brother, Stan, a most generous person, who had a great sense of humor and was always the life of the party. I cherish the memory of my older sister, Eleanor, who was kind, giving and compassionate; she always remembered everyone s birthday, anniversary or any other occasion. Through the years I enjoyed the respect and support of my older brother, Ted, and my two younger brothers, Tom and Dan. It was my younger sister, Lori, from whom many a time I sought and received some good and practical advice and assistance (you know how guys are!!). I thank God for the many wonderful aunts and uncles that I had very generous and kind to all. How they and the cousins of mine enjoyed our family visits. They are all gone. I remember all the wonderful people in Garfield Heights to whom we delivered the daily Cleveland Press - customers who lived on Vernon and Wadsworth off Turney Road. Our next door neighbor, who were Masons, gave me words of encouragement as I left for the Seminary. I remember the students in Saginaw, Michigan when I was assigned there in 1961. I recall the great football and basketball rivalries that took place among the high schools. In 1963 I remember the varied weather in Milwaukee when I attended the renowned Marquette University. What a relief when I completed my Masters Program in Classical Languages. The Franciscan Province provided me with a great education. The beautiful country of Watkins Glen, New York rolling hills and valleys overflowing with vineyards was the setting of our minor seminary from which we received candidates for the Order. From there to the giant high school in Philadelphia a huge student body and large faculty. Our Franciscan presence invaded many parishes and institutions. The second largest parish in Saginaw, St. Thomas Aquinas, became my next labor of love. I encountered many wonderful parishioners and clergy, and many of the youth involved in church projects. Here at St. Stanislaus a fine array of traditions and liturgies; many generous folks who are willing to give their time, talent and treasure in supporting the parish. The Polish culture and influence enhances our spiritual life. My thanks to the Sisters of St. Joseph; Holy Family of Nazareth; Bernadines and all others. To all who offer their prayers for me Many Thanks! Thanks be to God. Fr. Dodawali oni otuchy mnie i mojemu starszemu bratu, o. Howardowi, kiedy obaj rozważaliśmy powołanie do zakonu i kapłaństwa, i kiedy byliśmy na drodze formacji. 2 zakonników - kapłanów wśród ośmioosobowej gromadki dzieci - to całkiem nieźle. W niezapomnianej pamięci mam mojego starszego brata, Stanisława, najbardziej wspaniałomyślną osobę, obdarzonego wspaniałym poczuciem humoru, który ożywiał atmosferę na przyjęciach. Czule wspominam także moją najstarszą siostrę, łagodną, hojną i współczującą; ona zawsze pamiętała o urodzinach, jubileuszach i wszystkich innych radosnych okazjach. Stanisława, pielęgnującym tradycje i mającym wspaniałą liturgię, liczni wspaniałomyślni parafianie, ofiarujący swój czas, talenty i dzielący się swoim mieniem w utrzymaniu parafii. Polska kultura i tradycje ubogacają nasze życie duchowe. Podziękowania kieruję do licznych sióstr: Św. Józefa, Św. Rodziny z Nazaretu, Bernardynek i innych. Wszystkim, którzy pamiętają o mnie w modlitwie - z serca dziękuję. Bogu niech będą dzięki! O. Len

Można je również przewieść bezpośrednio do parafii Najświętszego Serca w godz. 8:30 do 10:00 w niedzielę rano. Dziękujemy za ofiarność i pomoc naszym przyjaciołom z kościoła Najświętszego Serca w tym trudnym dla nich czasie. Infants/Toddlers of Slavic Village Alleluia! Alleluia! Happy Easter to everyone who so graciously and unselfishly opened their hearts to the needs of the children of Slavic Village! Our baskets were full!! The hungry children will be fed well. God bless you for your generosity. The winner of the Easter Basket was June Zeszut, one of our newer parishioners from the former St. Hyacinth community. The next drawing will be held on April 25th for a $25 Manna Gift Card of the winner s choice. Please remember the children and continue to keep the baskets filled. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!! Four Eagle Banquet of Honor All are welcome... all are welcome... all are welcome to this event! The Eighth Annual Four Eagle Banquet and Silent Auction will be held on Friday, May 7, 2010, in the Social Center, starting at 6 p.m. This year we are honoring the generosity to our parish of two families the late Mel Kurtz, for the Kurtz Family, founder of Kurtz Brothers, Inc., and the late Rich DiGeronimo, for the DiGeronimo Family, founder of Precision Environmental and Independence Excavating. As individuals, families, and businesses, these honorees have chosen to become a part of our lives at St. Stanislaus by providing their time, talent, and treasure to a parish running on a very tight budget. We humbly thank them for these gifts which have allowed us to continue the advancement of the spiritual, educational, and cultural mission of this Shrine Parish. All are welcome to attend the Four Eagle Banquet of Honor. To ensure that this fundraising event is successful, we need you each and every one of you to attend. Tickets are $65 each and include delicious food stations, a fabulous dinner, delectable desserts, melodious music, top-shelf open bar, and an awesome silent auction. And, if you get a table of friends together both inside and outside our parish walls you can reserve a table! If you ve never attended this event in the past, attend this year and see the social center transformed. Enjoy a festive evening of food, conversation, and fun. Reserve the date Friday, May 7. We ll be there to welcome you! Call the rectory at 216-341-9091 to reserve your place. ST. STANS HISTORICAL FACT by Rob Jagelewski Prior to European settlement by either the French or the English Northeast Ohio was inhabited by Native American Indians. Our area was settled by the Erie Indian Tribe. They ranged from western New York to the southern shores of Lake Erie. The name, Erie is shortened from a longer Indian word meaning, long tail. The Erie tribe was sometimes named the Cat People in reference to a panther. Oddly enough our CYO teams at St. Stanislaus Elementary School are nicknamed the Panthers. The Erie Indians lived in multi family long houses in villages enclosed by palisades. They grew corn, beans, and squash. Unfortunately for the Erie Indians they ran afoul of the powerful Iroquois Indian nation and were totally defeated. Some Erie tribe survivors were adopted by the Seneca arm of the Iroquois nation. April 18 Kwietnia 2010 Year for Priests Thought for the Month Pope Benedict XVI has proclaimed June 19, 2009 to June 19, 2010 as the Year for Priests. Continuing the practice of the last couple of months, the Pastoral Council offers the following Thought for the Month (based on the pamphlet Five Ways to Support My Parish Priest, published by Our Sunday Visitor). One of the best things we can do for our priests is to get involved in parish life as much as our abilities permit. We all have gifts and talents we can use to enrich our parish community it s often a matter of recognizing how we can help and then acting on it. Though we are blessed to have many dedicated organizations and individuals in our parish, additional help is often needed. We can also offer our support by attending parish events and devotions over and above weekend Mass. We have many extras to choose from numerous concerts, Advent & Lenten devotions, May Crowning, Corpus Christi, Eucharistic Day, just to name a few. We can help our priests reaffirm their calling by letting them know when God has touched us in some special way through something they have said or done. Finally, we can help our priests care for their parishioners more effectively by making them aware of those who are ill, hospitalized, or going through a difficult period in their lives. PASTORAL COUNCIL NOMINATIONS The annual election for new Parish Pastoral Council members will take place the weekend of May 8-9.
