AS THE BEATIFICATION NEARS... In less than three months the world will be a witness to that for which we have been praying here at the Shrine Church of St. Stanislaus along with many Catholics around the world the beatification of John Paul II!! It seems like only yesterday that he was elected pope, yet we all know that his twenty six years as the successor of St. Peter finally ended on April 1, 2005. That day, the vigil of the great feast of Divine Mercy (which he himself had proclaimed) John Paul returned to the home of his and our Father. Now, some six years later, we will witness the official recognition he has earned during the Church s journey toward his canonization. The picture on the right is one taken not that many years ago when John Paul II presided over the beatification of Pope John XXIII (Sept. 3, 2000). The picture shows John Paul seated in front of an altar in St. Peter s Square with the body of John XXIII (who died in 1963) encased in a glass and bronze casket. During the service his body was carried around the square for the veneration by the faithful, then taken into St. Peter s Basilica where it was now to be entombed under the altar of St. Jerome. On May 1, 2011, we might be able to see much of the same process take place, this time with Pope Benedict XVI presiding over the ceremony and the body of John Paul II brought up from the crypt of St. Peter s. After the ceremony the body of Blessed John Paul II will be entombed beneath the altar of St. Sebastian, replacing the remains of an earlier pontiff, Bl. Innocent XI, whose remains will be transferred elsewhere within the basilica. That same day here in Cleveland we will be celebrating this event in various ways. Certain events are already in place, others in the planning stages. A few of which we are already sure include the Annual Polish Constitution Day Mass which will be held this year at the Shrine Church of St. Stanislaus at 10 AM. Following that event will be the Constitution Day Parade in Slavic Village at 1 PM. The final religious observance of the day will be the annual May Crowning at 4 PM at which time the secondary relic of the newly beatified John Paul II (his mitre) will be presented for veneration to the faithful as they prepare to venerate the image of Mary (touching and praying on her crown of roses as well as presenting her with flowers of their own). Additional details of the entire day s events will be published shortly as we have them confirmed, but, for now, this will be plenty to keep occupied in displaying our pride and joy as one of our own is so honored. Let us all pray for a great sunny day, but, more importantly, let us pray that we all might be unified in our faith in Jesus Christ, he who makes us and John Paul II worthy to serve for the greater glory of God. PASTORAL MESSAGE January 3 Stycznia 2010 Pastoral Message FEBRUARY 6 LUTEGO 2011 BISHOP PILLA S TALK ON THE EUCHARIST PART II The Eucharist is pre-eminently a social sacrament; it is the family meal which unites the members of God s family ever more closely to one another as they share with one another the body and blood of Christ. Many people today have lost sight of the social nature of Holy Communion. Therefore, they fail to see the essential connection between Communion and the love and unity which must be ours as members of Christ s Church. Many receive Communion often in the hope of becoming holier, without stopping to analyze what becoming holier means. They fail to realize that becoming holier means union with God, yes, but it also means union with each other; it means becoming friendlier, more concerned with others, more approachable, kinder, more ready to be involved with others and to put oneself out for others in short, becoming more charitable. During one of the many visits I had with John Paul II, I once had the privilege to offer Mass together with him alone. It was an outstanding experience to be with him alone on this occasion, with someone who totally lived the Gospel of Christ, a mystical experience which I will never forget. To participate worthily, intelligently, and full heartedly in Christ s and the Church s offering demands that we adopt as far as possible the very mind of Christ Himself as He embraced his death-resurrection Passover to the Father. If the Eucharist serves to enshrine for all time the sublime commitment of a Divine Being, Jesus Christ embracing humiliation and death in our name, then we, His adopted brothers and sisters trough baptism cannot stand idly by as detached observers. Like the Apostles, we accept the challenge of joining Christ in His Passover when we eat His flesh and His Eucharistic blood. St. John stresses that the Eucharist is not just about my communion with Jesus. The washing feet of the Apostles by Lord Jesus shows that the Eucharist is communion with others as well. So, it is not only the vertical dimensions, but also the horizontal one. Remember, the cross has two beams. One goes up and down, the other from side to side. The Eucharist in not a private devotion; it has the social dimension, too. Sometimes you can hear the question, Why should I go to church? or, What I get from the Mass? You get what you give. You cannot count on the others that they will do what YOU are supposed to do. Others have something different to do. If you don t do it, it will not be done. The diocese of Cleveland is composed of eight counties, of which a total of 33 percent of the population call themselves Catholics. Can you imagine what could be done if that 33 percent actually allowed the Eucharist to operate in their lives? Can you imagine how different things could be in our lives? Communion requires commitment. Communion is a challenge to grow more and more like Christ, to let ourselves be changed by Him, to live a more selfless life dedicated as He was to the good of others. Inni mają coś innego do zrobienia.

This coincided with the 125th Anniversary of the founding of our Parish Community in 1873. The restoration work was done by Conrad Schmitt Studios of Wisconsin. They restored the original beauty of the Church interior that was hidden behind several layers of paint and wallpaper. A historic paint investigation discovered colors and the design of the original decorative scheme. Historic photographs aided in verifying the original stencil patterns and their positions. A decorative finish was added to the walls, ceiling, columns, ornamental woodwork, and ribs. Historic stencil patterns were reapplied to the walls. Murals, statues, and the Stations of the Cross were conserved. Gold leaf stars were added to the ceiling.
