In fact, because of the plethora of these events, one can wonder whether or not some feasts are diminished in their endearment to the faithful. Well, I think it can honestly be said that amongst our own parishioners those sentiments never seem to diminish! In fact, we seem to wear our hearts on our sleeves to such an extent that the whole month reflects an augmentation of the Easter joy which began so many weeks ago! One such May celebration which in many parishioners partake is that of the Infant of Prague. The Infant has a long and colored history, including an aspect shared with the famous icon of Our Lady of Jasna Góra inasmuch as both religious images endured attacks by the Protestant Swedes in the 17th century. Also both had their origins far from their current Slavic homes. Likewise, their early histories both contain much legend and pious indulgence colored over the centuries producing some beautiful and inspirational images among their loving admirers. Those of you who were able to acquire the little white booklets which were made available at the beginning of this Easter season will soon read the installment for May 24, that dealing with a short history of the Infant of Prague. For those of you without such access, allow me to repeat a bit of that history. It is generally believed to have its first recorded origins in Spain in the early 16th century (although sources often choose to date its origins much further back in history), and its appearance does seem to date it to the artistic styles of that general milieu. The Infant became especially known as it was presented as a wedding gift of a Spanish noblewoman to her daughter in the process of marrying into Czech nobility. The daughter then passed it to her own daughter in similar fashion who, upon the death of her husband, placed the image under the care of the Carmelite nuns living in Prague. The Swedish invasion caused the image to be damaged, resulting in its need for drastic repairs (similar to the image in Częstochowa). The image took on a similar persona to that of the Polish icon as it was regarded as protecting both the specific city as well as the greater nation from total destruction by the invading forces. Many miracles were attributed through the intercession of this special statue who promised graces to those who would honor the Infant Jesus. The more you will honor me, the more will I bless you is the phrase associated with one of the earliest personal religious experiences associated with the image s history in faithful circles. This week in Prague they are no doubt in the midst of the annual religious celebrations in honor of the Infant. In our own church there is still hope that a version of the Infant might someday return amongst our gallery of important standards representing the personal relationship between God and humanity. Unfortunately, our own statue is in desperate need of repair (probably far more work than the original Infant ever required) having been severely damaged after falling from its shrine) and, perhaps, will someday find a patron to help repair Him as Father Cyrillus did centuries ago in Prague, resulting in answered prayers as well as in miracles. Here at the Shrine Church of St. Stanislaus, we all believe these things can happen. PASTORAL MESSAGE May 24, Maja 2009 Of the national holidays that we celebrate in the this country my favorite was Memorial Day. It signaled for students the ending of another school year and the beginning of summer vacation fun, sleeping in, outdoor activities, going to the amusement park, swimming, camping and roasting marshmallows. And, oh yes, going to see our favorite sandlot teams more enjoyable and less expensive than our Cleveland Indians even in those days! This holiday brought people together and focused on remembering those who had lost their limbs and/or lives on the field of war. I remember the many young men that lived in my neighborhood and on the adjacent streets to mine. How I would meet these folks when delivering the Cleveland Press to their homes. But the Second World War changed everything. They were gone to war never to come back again. I remember all the homes that displayed banners with the Gold Star signifying the loss of a son or daughter. We all remember so many from our respective neighborhood that made the supreme sacrifice. What a tremendous price paid for this gift and privilege that we call Freedom. On Memorial day I remember we would watch the parade and then later in the day go to the cemetery and pay our respects to many of those whom we knew, including our relatives. What a sight it was to see so many people at the cemetery, eyes welling with tears, as they placed beautiful flowers and decorations at the gravesites hence, the name, Decoration Day. This is a day that God gives to us namely, to remember, to recall, bring back to mind and heart all those who laid down their lives for us and future generations. On Memorial Day businesses were closed, including even gas stations and rug stores. As a family we attended morning Mass to pray for those who died. Of course, we all know that the celebration of this day began after the Civil War eventually to honor all who had fallen in the line of battle both North and South. Our Beloved Country has countless numbers of cemeteries at home and in countries abroad. At all these revered sites we pause to pray and honor the memory of those who died for our sake. We reflect on the cost of war and the price of peace. We try to make sense of all these decades of war and instability, and today, perhaps, the disregard for the presumed accessibility of freedom in our country. We know how tenuous that it we all recall only too well the events of 9/11. On this day we ought also to remember all those of our respective families parents, brothers and sisters and relatives; friends and neighbors who have preceded us into eternity. We ought to remember and pray for those of our parish; our classmates; priests and religious, and teachers. But most of all this beautiful as everyday should serve as a reminder to all of us: the precious gift of eternal life secured for us through the Supreme Sacrifice of Jesus on the Cross. Without his death and the promise of a new life hereafter a cemetery would be hardly worthwhile to visit and even less worthy of remembrance. Peace be with you!! Fr. Len Niebo Pewien proboszcz tak rozpoczął swoje niedzielne kazanie: Jestem dziedzicem w czworakim sensie. W pierwszym moim spadku mieszkam, drugi zużyłem na moje studia, trzeci rozdałem. A o czwartym chcę teraz mówić. Słowem Bożym jest Jezus Chrystus; kiedy czytamy Pismo św., On mówi do nas. Pan Jezus wstępując do nieba wywyższył ludzką naturę. Placyd
