The cast is composed of Notre Dame students as well as female students from Resurrec on, Regina and Maine South High Schools. COR'S CORNER... There was a dedicated old priest who always wondered what the real difference was between heaven and hell. To sa sfy his curiosity, he prayed for some sort of revela on. One day, God granted him the privilege. He first visited hell. He was absolutely flabbergasted to find no flames, no pointed tail devils... only crowds of angry people crowding around long wooden tables. At each place was a large wooden bowl of food and a 10 foot long wooden spoon. By pushing and shoving into place at the table, the people in the angry mob managed to get their long spoon around and get it into their mouths. That frustra on and accompanying bi erness and bickering were apparently the hell of if. The old priest was then allowed a glimpse of heaven. He was amazed to discover the same massive wood tables, huge wooden bowls of food and 10 foot long wooden spoons. But in heaven, there was a spirit of peace, though ulness and joy! In heaven, the people were feeding each other. Now, obviously, if we are planning to spend an eternity in heaven, we had be er start leaning how to feed one another! Here at St. Ferdinand's, our parishioners give food for the needy, to our food pantry. Please, when you shop this weekend, buy a li le extra (for our pantry) and bring it to Mass on Saturday and Sunday, November 1st and 2"d. So many thanks for all your caring and sharing. God bless you. COR will be cooking and delivering meals to our needy and homebound parishioners this Thanksgiving. If you would like a Turkey dinner, complete with stuffmg, potatoes, vegetables, pie and fruit, please call the COR office (773 622 9732). The names of the parishioners who died between November 2013 and October 2014 will be read during the prayers of the faithful at this Mass. Please join their families and friends in praying for the repose of their souls. Pray with us as we offer comfort and support to their families. very day in the Church calendar has a saint day, but E the Solemnity of All Saints is when the Church honors all saints, known and unknown. This is much like the American holidays Veterans Day and Presidents Day, where many people are honored on one day. While we have informa on about many saints, and we honor them on specific days, there are many unknown or unsung saints, who may have been forgo en, or never been specifically honored. On All Saints Day, we cele brate these saints of the Lord, and ask for their prayers and intercessions. The whole concept of All Saints Day is ed in with the concept of the Communion of Saints. This is the belief that all of God's people, on heaven, earth, and in the state of purifica on (called Purgatory in the West), are connected in a communion. In other words, Catholic and Orthodox Chris ans believe that the saints of God are just as alive as you and I, and are constantly interceding on our behalf. Remember, our connec on with the saints in heaven is one gro unded in a ght knit communion. The saints are not divine, nor omnipresent or omniscient. However, because of our co mmon communion with and through Jesus Christ, our prayers are joined with the heavenly community of Chris ans. ouls Day follows All Saints Day, and solemnly S commemorates the faithful departed, i.e. those who die with God's grace and friendship. Catholics believe that not all those who die in God's grace are immediately ready for the Bea fic vision, i.e. the reality and goodness of God and heaven, so they must be purified of "lesser faults," and the temporal effects of sin. The Catholic Church calls this purifica on of the elect, "purgatory." The Catholic teaching on Purgatory essen ally requires belief in two reali es: 1. that there will be a purifica on of believers prior to entering heaven and 2. that the prayers and masses of the faithful in some way benefit those in the state of purifica on. As to the dura on, place, and exact nature of this purifica on, the Church has no official dogma, although Saint Augus ne and others used fire as a way to explain the nature of the purifica on. Many faithful Catholics, including Pope Benedict XVI, grant that Purgatory may be best thought of as an existen al state, as opposed to a temporal place. Nonetheless, the prayers and Masses of the faithful do have an impact on the purifica on that the faithful are undergoing in Purgatory. As a more everyday explana on, many liken Purgatory to a place or state where one gets "cleaned up" before entering into the presence of Almighty God. PORZĄDEK MSZY ŚW. Pierwsze spotkanie Dzieci Bozych odbędzie się 7 go listopada, w pierwszy piątek miesiąca, po Mszy Sw. wieczornej. Celem formacji w Oazie Dzieci Bozych jest osiągnięcie świadomego, czynnego i owocnego uczestnictwa w liturgii. Podstawową drogą do osiągnięcia tego celu jest wypełnianie tzw. siedmiu zadań tygodnia. Należy do nich: posługa podczas Mszy świętej w niedzielę i dzień powszedni, udział w cotygodniowym spotkaniu w grupie, wypełnienie "słowa życia", nauka dobrej modlitwy, apostolstwo w rodzinie i posługa wobec braci. Zadania te są wprowadzane stopniowo poprzez różnego rodzaju ćwiczenia i zabawy. Spotkania koncentrują się na wypracowaniu "sprawności" cech dziecka Bożego. Pomóżmy dzieciom wzrastać w wierze, wytrwać w praktykach religijnych, towarzyszyć im w budowaniu dobrych relacji z Bogiem i Kosciolem. Serdecznie zapraszamy!!! Reynolds (john@jrwrites.com) If I knew okra like Ha e knows okra, I d write a book about it or something. At least a column. But since I don t know okra like Ha e knows okra, I ll just write about Ha e, and how I came to meet her. When our parish went through the Parish Transforma on process earlier in the year, we discerned that to be er live our call to discipleship both individually and as a parish we needed to be er engage our missionary spirit. In reviewing my notes from all those mee ngs, I see that we were prompted to answer ques ons like, What programs do we have that go beyond the walls of the church? And, How do we help people in the world? And, How can we be more mission directed? Fortunately, two of our Parish Transforma on team members began looking for specific answers, and those answers led several of us to a recent service opportunity at the Our Lady of the Angels Mission mobile food pantry. And that s where I met Ha e. The children in our group were tasked with preparing bags of food and to hand these bags to the neighborhood people who came to the pantry each month. The adults in our group were tasked with walking the neighbors to the various sta ons, helping them get their groceries into the carts provided by the mission, and then helping them get the groceries into their car or to their nearby homes before returning the carts for the next neighbors in line. I was assigned to Ha e, but it s more like Ha e was assigned to me, because our associa on began with an enormous, Ha e ini ated hug. And moments later, when Ha e took her okra, she spoke to me for the remainder of my me with her about ways to prepare it. I confessed to her that even though I m a food technologist and even though I ve got skills in the kitchen I ve never used fresh okra. Ha e was happy to make me an okra convert, though, which could be why she hugged me at the end as well. Speaking with another volunteer that day about how it was good for us to be there, I made the observa on that in many ways it s easier to take care of people on the other side of the world than it is to take care of people in our own backyard. He agreed. I can write a check for the poor in a minute a er all (the pantry took up the en re morning), but Ha e s hugs connected me more with the larger mission discipleship than many checks I ve wri en over the years. When the Pharisee in today s Gospel tries to trip Jesus up by asking him about the most important commandment, Christ again turns it into a teaching moment. You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment, he says. But then he adds, The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself Ah, there s the rub. It s easy to say, Lord, Lord, but if we don t recognize the Christ in Ha e or in the people across the world benefi ng from the checks we write, then we re missing the point. And the point is everything. In truth, sadly, I ve missed it o en. But Ha e helped me to get it a bit more. Yeah. Ha e s hugs were teaching moments, too.
