Saint Joseph Basilica July 1, 2018 3 Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 1, 2018.as a matter of equality your abundance at the present time should supply their want, so that their abundance may supply your want, that there may be equality. 2 Corinthians 8:14 Today's gospel gives us two further proofs of the divine power and the infinite mercy of our Savior. Apart from the primary purpose of proving his claim to be the promised Messiah, all his miracles had as their aim and end the benefit of suffering human beings. He worked no miracle for the sake of astonishing people or to satisfy idle gossip. Each one was performed in order to help someone in distress. All who were helped by his miracles of mercy had one thing in common they were motivated by trust in his mercy and power. The leper in Matthew (8:2) expressed the sentiments of them all: Lord, if only you will you can cleanse me (of my leprosy). Let us say a fervent prayer of thanksgiving to God for the gift of active faith which he has given us and beg of him to keep that faith ever alive in our hearts. Let us think, too, of our fellowmen, our brothers in Christ, who are so busy with their worldly occupations and pleasures that they cannot find time to listen to his message. They are spiritually anemic and almost spiritually dead, but cannot push their way toward Christ through the throngs of earthly, worldly barricades which they have built about themselves. Our sincere prayers can help them to overcome these obstacles; frequently and fervently let us ask God to send them his most wonderful grace so that these brothers in Christ will also be with him in heaven. Please write your intentions on the forms provided in the chapel. We thank you for your donations. SISTER MARY VALENTA AKALSKI 1939-2018 Sister Valenta passed away to eternity on Saturday, June 23. She dedicated her life to Jesus Christ and His Church serving 59 years in the religious community of the Felician Sisters. Sister Valenta worked at St. Joseph School for eight years teaching religion and assisting with our kindergarten classes. Her kindness, diligence, and motherly approach to children will linger in the minds and hearts of our children for years to come. She was involved with many projects in the school and parish and left an imprint on the character formation of the St. Joseph School children. Teachers like Sister Valenta change lives, inspire faith, and promote involvement in the life of our school. Needless to say, she will be greatly missed and we hope that she will pray for her twin sister, Jeanne, and the children of St. Joseph School. May her gentle soul rest in peace.

NOVENA TO DIVINE MERCY On Sunday, July 1, at 3 p.m. we will have special devotions to Divine Mercy. We ask parishioners and friends to please make every effort to join us in the singing of the Chaplet followed by Benediction. FIRST FRIDAY ADORATION On Friday, July 6, we will celebrate First Friday of the month. Members of the Sacred Heart Society and all parishioners are invited to join us at the 7 a.m. Mass which is designated for the Living Members of the Sacred Heart Society. The evening Votive Mass at 7 p.m. will be celebrated in the Polish language. REFLECTIONS ON INDEPENDENCE DAY On July 4, 1776, the United States claimed independence and our democratic republic was born. The Fourth of July is celebrated to mark the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. We are truly a diverse nation. Millions have left their homelands to come to the land of the free to begin their American Dream. On this day we thank God for the gift of freedom but realize that freedom is not free. In recent times our freedom has been endangered. Christian values are often rejected with impermissible hostility toward religious beliefs. All of this is part of our contemporary culture. We are not far from the beliefs of the 19th century especially the attitude of the Know- Nothing political party (anti-immigrant and anti-roman Catholic party) which believed that Catholics were out to destroy the culture of the United States. For this reason the Church annually celebrates the Fortnight For Freedom which is celebrated from June 21 July 4. As we enjoy family gatherings let us pray that freedom and Catholic values, which are based on Judeo-Christian tradition, will inspire our nation for years to come. ST. ALTAR SERVERS AND CHILDREN OF MARY SUMMER CAMP Last week our Altar Servers and Childrem of Mary participated in three day camp in Camp Stanica, Palmer, MA. All participants had a good time and a lot of fun. The camp was organized as an appreciation for whole year of dedicated service and devotion. TRZYNASTA NIEDZIELA ZWYKŁA 1 lipca 2018 Teraz więc niech wasz dostatek przyjdzie z pomocą ich potrzebom, aby ich bogactwo było wam pomocą w waszych niedostatkach i aby nastała równość według tego, co jest napisane. (2Kor 8, 14) Choroba, ból, śmierć kogoś bliskiego te i inne oblicza cierpienia wywołują sprzeciw. Buntujemy się przeciwko nim, a czasem przeciw Bogu, doszukując się Jego winy. Gdyby można było cierpienie przeżywać w inny sposób, ze spokojem czy radością, przestałoby być cierpieniem. Niezgoda na cierpienie odkrywa słabość, obnaża bezradność, upokarza. I dlatego cierpiące osoby nierzadko doświadczają oczyszczenia w wierze. Być może w taki sposób działa Bóg, usuwając to wszystko, co w nas przysłania Jego samego. Jezus podczas ziemskiego życia nie unikał cierpiących ludzi. Spotkania z nimi pokazując, w jaki sposób Bóg wychodzi naprzeciw człowiekowi w jego biedzie. SIOSTRA MARY VALENTA AKALSKI 1939 2018 Siostra Valenta zmarła w sobotę, 23 czerwca. Oddała swe życie Jezusowi Chrystusowi i Jego Kościołowi, służąc 59 lat we wspólnocie zakonnej sióstr Felicjanek. Siostra Valenta pracowała w szkole św. Józefa przez osiem ostatnich lat nauczając religii i asystując w zajęciach w przedszkolu. Jej życzliwość, pracowitość i matczyne podejście do dzieci pozostanie w umysłach i sercach naszych uczniów przez wiele lat. Brała udział w wielu przedsięwzięciach w szkole i parafii, pozostawiając niezatarty ślad w życiu dzieci ze szkoły św. Józefa. Nauczyciele tacy jak Siostra Valenta zmieniają życie, inspirują wiarę i promują zaangażowanie w życie naszej szkoły. Nie trzeba dodawać, że będzie jej nam bardzo brakowało i mamy nadzieję, że w niebie będzie się wstawiała się za swoimi siostrami: Jeanne i Mary Anne oraz za naszą wspólnotą szkolna i parafialną. Niech jej dusza spoczywa w pokoju.

DZIEŃ NIEPODLEGŁOŚCI 4 lipca 1776 r. Stany Zjednoczone ogłosiły niepodległość i tego dnia narodziła się nasza demokratyczna republika. Czwarty lipca obchodzony jest z okazji przyjęcia Deklaracji Niepodległości. Jesteśmy naprawdę zróżnicowanym narodem. Miliony ludzi opuściło swoje ojczyzny, aby przybyć do krainy wolnych ludzi, aby rozpocząć swój amerykański sen. W tym dniu dziękujemy Bogu za dar wolności, ale uświadamiamy sobie, że wolność nie jest darmowa. W ostatnim czasie nasza wolność znajduje się w ciągłym zagrożeniu. Wartości chrześcijańskie są często odrzucane z niedopuszczalną wrogością wobec przekonań religijnych. Duża cześć społeczeństwa nie jest daleko od przekonań z XIX wieku, zwłaszcza od postawy partii politycznej Know-Nothing (anty imigracyjnej i antykatolickiej), która uważała, że katolicy chcą zniszczyć kulturę Stanów Zjednoczonych. Z tego powodu Kościół corocznie celebruje Dwa Tygodnie Wolności, które są obchodzone od 21 czerwca do 4 lipca. Ciesząc się spotkaniami w rodzinnym i przyjacielskim gronie, módlmy się, aby wolność i wartości katolickie, oparte na tradycji judeochrześcijańskiej, inspirowały nasz naród na przyszłość. FESTIWAL Serdeczne podziękowania dla wszystkich, którzy pracowali jako wolontariusze przed, w trakcie i po naszym festiwalu w tym roku. KATECHEZA I BIERZMOWANIE Zaczynamy planowanie nowego roku katechetycznego. Bardzo prosimy o zapisywanie dzieci na zajęcia na przyszły rok. Formularze zapisowe znajdują się przy wejściach do Bazyliki. Opłata wynosi $40 za pierwsze dziecko, $70 za dwoje i więcej dzieci. Dodatkowo będzie pobierana opłata w wysokości $5 za zapis po 1 lipca. W tym roku również będzie prowadzone przygotowanie do Sakramentu Bierzmowania. Opłata wynosi $60 od osoby. W tej opłacie zawarte są koszta materiałów edukacyjnych i rekolekcji. Wypełnione formularze wraz z czekiem prosimy wkładać do koszyka z kolektą lub przynieść do biura parafialnego. DOŁĄCZ DO NASZEJ WSPÓLNOTY Parafia Bazyliki św. Józefa zaprasza wszystkich, którzy pragną przyjąć chrzest, lub są już ochrzczeni, ale nie przyjęli pierwszej Komunii św. lub Sakramentu Bierzmowania. Zapraszamy również tych, którzy z jakiegoś powodu oddalili się od Kościoła Jezusowego i pragną powrotu do pełnej jedności z Bogiem i Kościołem. Andrzeja Boboli zaprasza na coroczny festiwal, który odbędzie się 24 i 25 sierpnia. Organizatorzy festiwalu zachęcają lokalne firmy do reklamowania swojej działalności.
