PAGE 2 THIRTY THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME NOVEMBER 13, 2016 Who won? Who did not? And who really lost? If you read the newspapers and listen to the news on radio and television, you get the idea that, regardless of who won the election, the real losers were the people who were forced to vote for or vote against two of the worst candidates ever chosen to run for the office of President of the United States. (By the way this bulletin article is being written on October 31 because of early bulletin deadlines due to the November 11 Veterans Day holiday. Even if it were being written on the normal date, November 8, the outcome of the election still would not be known by this author.) It is not my intention to get involved in any way in politics. My job is to pray and to encourage people to follow Jesus. I would, however, like to remind everyone about the twelve people Jesus chose to be his closest followers, those who would continue his mission and lay the groundwork for the Church he founded. They were among the least likely he could have or should have chosen to carry on his work, at least to the so-called experts, but 2,000 years later, the Church is still here, carrying on the message of Jesus. At times like this, I am reminded of Saint Callistus (martyred around 222 or 223 A.D.). He was a slave of the Romans and put in charge of the bank. Funds mysteriously disappeared. Callistus was sent to prison and then he was given time to repay the money. He got into a fight in the synagogue and was condemned to work in the mines of Sardinia, where, somehow, he became a good friend of the emperor s mistress. Some say they were more than just friends and he was released from the mines something almost unheard of in those days. The pope put him in charge of the Christian burial grounds, figuring that he could not get into too much trouble with just dead people around. He was ordained a deacon and became one of the pope s top advisors. Somehow, he got elected pope. The losing candidate, Saint Hippolytus, then set himself up as anti -pope and the two argued for 18 years. Callistus ended up being one of the greatest popes in the history of our Church. He admitted to Holy Communion those who had already done public penance for the sins of murder, adultery, fornication. He went against Roman laws and allowed marriages between free women and slaves to be valid. Those who were married two or three times were allowed to become priests. He forgave the apostates, that is, those who denied their faith in times of persecution, and welcomed them back into the Church. He reminds me a little of Pope Francis, not that Francis led such a wild life before becoming pope, but that he is more welcoming and forgiving than many Church leaders today. Pope Saint Callistus did many wrong things in his life, but when he was given the chance, he became a great leader and follower of Jesus. So let us not be too quick to judge. ******************** HELP WANTED We are looking for someone to update the bulletin board with the pictures of those currently serving in the Armed Forces of our country.

PAGE 3 THIRTY THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME NOVEMBER 13 2016 READINGS FOR THIS WEEKEND FIRST READING: 2 MALACHI 3:19-20A Lo, the day is coming, blazing like an oven, when all the proud and all evildoers will be stubble, and the day that is coming will set them on fire, leaving them neither root nor branch, says the LORD of hosts. But for you who fear my name, there will arise the sun of justice with its healing rays. SECOND READING: 2 THESSALONIANS 3:7-12 Brothers and sisters: You know how one must imitate us. For we did not act in a disorderly way among you, nor did we eat food received free from anyone. On the contrary, in toil and drudgery, night and day we worked, so as not to burden any of you. Not that we do not have the right. Rather, we wanted to present ourselves as a model for you, so that you might imitate us. In fact, when we were with you, we instructed you that if anyone was unwilling to work, neither should that one eat. We hear that some are conducting themselves among you in a disorderly way, by not keeping busy but minding the business of others. Such people we instruct and urge in the Lord Jesus Christ to work quietly and to eat their own food. GOSPEL: LUKE 21:5-19 While some people were speaking about how the temple was adorned with costly stones and votive offerings, Jesus said, All that you see here-- the days will come when there will not be left a stone upon another stone that will not be thrown down. Then they asked him, Teacher, when will this happen? And what sign will there be when all these things are about to happen? He answered, See that you not be deceived, for many will come in my name, saying, I am he, and The time has come. Do not follow them! When you hear of wars and insurrections, do not be terrified; for such things must happen first, but it will not immediately be the end. Then he said to them, Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be powerful earthquakes, famines, and plagues from place to place; and awesome sights and mighty signs will come from the sky. Before all this happens, however, they will seize and persecute you, they will hand you over to the synagogues and to prisons, and they will have you led before kings and governors because of my name. It will lead to your giving testimony. Remember, you are not to prepare your defense beforehand, for I myself shall give you a wisdom in speaking that all your adversaries will be powerless to resist or refute. You will even be handed over by parents, brothers, relatives, and friends, and they will put some of you to death. You will be hated by all because of my name, but not a hair on your head will be destroyed. By your perseverance you will secure your lives.

Psalm 98:5 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION With Thanksgiving approaching, we think of the quest of the Puritans who arrived on the Mayflower from their first exile in Leyden, Holland. Like the Catholics of England, they were religious dissenters who suffered penalties for not participating in the worship life of the established church. The Catholics established monasteries, schools, and convents on the continent to assure the vigor of their faith s intellectual and spiritual life. The Puritans fled to the tolerant Netherlands with similar hopes of preserving their way of life, but were unable to adapt to Dutch ways. There were Catholics who made a similar colonial journey. The hero of the story is George Calvert, Lord Baltimore, the former Secretary of State of Britain and a Catholic. He proposed that King Charles I establish a proprietary colony that he would own and rule, named Maryland in honor of the Catholic Queen Henrietta Maria. George Calvert died unexpectedly in the midst of this project, but his son Cecil faithfully carried out his father s wishes. Maryland became a symbol of freedom for wealthy recusant English families, as well as for the poor who held to the Catholic faith despite great hardship. From the start, the colony was open to Protestants and Catholics equally, and the seeds of the religious freedom so dear to the American spirit were sown with the first colonists in 1634. Rev. PAGE 5 THIRTY THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME NOVEMBER 13, 2016 What do you want me to do for you? He replied, Lord, please let me see. Luke 18 Thirty-Third Week of Ordinary Time Being prepared for the coming of the Kingdom and not being side-tracked by false claims of Jesus' presence are keys to Luke's Gospel for the Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time. Jesus says, By your perseverance you will secure your lives. Thursday is the Memorial of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary, religious. During these last two weeks of Ordinary Time, the first reading is from the Book of Revelation, with its mystic imagery. Written for readers who were familiar with apocalyptic writings, the writings send a hidden message of salvation to the earliest communities of Christians, and to us. Luke's Gospel continues with the story of the blind man who hails him, Jesus, Son of David, have pity on me! An unpopular tax collector, Zacchaeus, climbs a tree to get a glimpse of Jesus and is given personal recognition as Jesus says, Zacchaeus, today I must stay at your house. Luke's version of the parable of the talents offers praise for the servant who has invested the ten coins and earned another ten. Well done, good servant! You have been faithful in this very small matter; take charge of ten cities. In Jerusalem, Jesus weeps over the city, foreseeing the destruction that is coming, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation. Jesus drives out the sellers from the temple while the chief priests plot against him. Religious leaders try to trap him with a trick question about a woman who marries seven brothers but Jesus refutes them. Sunday is the Thirty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time and the last week of the liturgical year. As always on this last Sunday, we celebrate the Solemnity of Christ the King. The readings remind us of God's faithfulness to us as he promises to shepherd the people of Israel. In Luke's Gospel we are taken to the crucifixion and Jesus being mocked as King of the Jews. The man crucified next to him asks Jesus to remember him when he gets into his Kingdom. Jesus replies, Amen, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise. Daily Prayer This Week: Making changes in our lives and the fear of making those changes are both themes in this week's gospels. Zacchaeus boldly reforms his life after he allows Jesus into it. The servant who is given a gold coin hides it in a handkerchief because he is afraid of his master. He has a chance to be given responsibilities but his fear keeps him from doing anything. We are often afraid when we consider making a change in our lives. We can see habits that are not healthy, a benign neglect of those we love and patterns that are deeply set in our lives. We may know deep down that we want to change them but we don't have the confidence to believe we can do it. This week we are invited by Jesus to know that while we can't make those changes alone, we can if we allow Jesus to be with us in them. Where do we start? With a small prayer. In those tiny pockets of time during our week, when we travel, ride to work, do dishes or even in the shower, we can make these reflective moments to ask for help. Just as Jesus asked the blind man, What do you want me to do for you? he is asking us the same question. What do we want Jesus to do for us? Where do we want to make changes in the patterns of our lives? What changes are we afraid to make? Dear Jesus, I ask for your help. Heal my fears. You have asked how you can help me and I am afraid to answer. I know what changes need to be made in my life but it seems overwhelming. Help me to open my heart to what you are asking - and to what I know I need. Be with me when I don't always know how to live in these new patterns and give me the humility to keep asking you for help over and over. Let me feel your presence in my life and that will give me the strength and courage I need to live my life more faithfully. PAGE 6 THIRTY THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME NOVEMBER 13, 2016 Jubilee Year of Mercy November 13, 2016 Thirty Third Sunday in Ordinary Time As this Jubilee Year of Mercy comes to an end, Jesus first disciples ask what every age seems to wonder about the end of the world: Teacher, when will this happen? What sign will there be? (Luke 21:7). But instead of what we d like to know, Jesus tells us what we need to know. Don t be terrified by natural disasters, human violence, personal sufferings. Because God s mercy abounds, all is grace. It will lead to your giving testimony (21:13). So Malachi promises the sun of justice with its healing rays (Malachi 3:20a); and Jesus describes how we should welcome the end: Stand erect and raise your heads, because your redemption is at hand (Gospel Acclamation, Luke 21:28). Rather than worrying about ourselves and the future s perils, both Jesus gospel and Pope Francis Jubilee Year of Mercy bid us go forth to spend our lives proclaiming God s promise of boundless mercy, but also translating God s mercy into living deeds of unfailing compassion and enduring comfort. On bêdzie s¹dzi³ œwiat sprawiedliwie i ludy wed³ug s³usznoœci. Oto S³owo Bo e. ŒPIEW PRZED EWANGELI : k 21,28 Alleluja, Alleluja, Alleluja Nabierzcie ducha i podnieœcie g³owy, poniewa zbli a siê wasze odkupienie. Zapytali Go: Nauczycielu, kiedy to nast¹pi? I jaki bêdzie znak, gdy siê to dziaæ zacznie?. Jezus odpowiedzia³: Strze cie siê, eby was nie zwiedziono. Wtedy mówi³ do nich: Powstanie naród przeciw narodowi i królestwo przeciw królestwu. Bêd¹ silne trzêsienia ziemi, a miejscami g³ód i zaraza; uka ¹ siê straszne zjawiska i wielkie znaki na niebie. Lecz przed tym wszystkim podnios¹ na was rêce i bêd¹ was przeœladowaæ. Wydadz¹ was do synagog i do wiêzieñ oraz z powodu mojego imienia wlec was bêd¹ do królów i namiestników. Bêdzie to dla was sposobnoœæ do sk³adania œwiadectwa. Postanówcie sobie w sercu nie obmyœlaæ naprzód swej obrony. Ja bowiem dam wam wymowê i m¹droœæ, której aden z waszych przeœladowców nie bêdzie siê móg³ oprzeæ ani siê sprzeciwiæ. A wydawaæ was bêd¹ nawet rodzice i bracia, krewni i przyjaciele i niektórych z was o œmieræ przyprawi¹. I z powodu mojego imienia bêdziecie w nienawiœci u wszystkich. Ale w³os z g³owy wam nie zginie. Przez swoj¹ wytrwa³oœæ ocalicie wasze ycie. Oto s³owo Pañskie.
