April 29, 2018 Fifth Sunday of Easter St. Joseph Catholic Church, 7240 W. 57th St., Summit, Illinois I AM the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit.
Fr. Bob s Briefs In the Easter Season, we continue with Jesus I AM statements found in the Gospel of John. Last week, we heard Jesus say I AM the Good Shepherd. Today, on this Fifth Sunday of Easter, we hear Jesus say that I AM the true vine. Jesus uses the image of grapevine, which would be very familiar to the people of his area and time. In the Gospel of John today, we hear Jesus say I AM the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit. In this beautiful icon, we see an image of Jesus the True Vine. Growing on the Vine of Christ, we see some of Jesus disciples. The name of each disciple is written in Greek besides each of their image. The names of the disciples depicted on the icon are as follows. On the left side, beginning at the top and moving down in rows are: John on top, Mark and Peter second row, Andrew third row, Jacob fourth row, and Thomas on the bottom. On the right side, beginning at the top and moving down in rows are: Matthew on top, Paul and Luke second row, Simon third row, Nathanael fourth row, and Phillip on the bottom. We see each of these disciples growing on the vine of Christ, surrounded by healthy green leaves and purple clusters of grapes growing on the branches. These leaves and grapes surrounding the disciples indicate that they have listened to the words that Jesus has spoken in today s Gospel. If you remain in me and my words remain in you you bear much fruit. What is the fruit that Jesus is talking about? Perhaps, the fruit that Jesus is asking His disciples to bear is the fruit of Faith, Hope, and Charity (Love). We call these three virtues the theological virtues. These three virtues are called the theological virtues because they are gifts infused by God into the souls of the faithful to make them capable of acting as His children and of meriting eternal life. Faith is the virtue by which we firmly believe all of the Truths that God has revealed, on the word of God by revealing them. They are infallibly true because God can neither deceive nor be deceived. Hope is the virtue by which we firmly trust that God, Who is all-powerful and all-faithful to His promises, will in His mercy give us eternal happiness and the means to obtain it. Charity is the virtue by which we love God above all things for His own sake, and our neighbors as ourselves for the love of God. Charity is the Queen of all virtues. It unites God and each human person perfectly in love. It also unites the human person to all other persons, for the love of God. To love God above all things, we must be willing to renounce all created things rather than often Him by sin. Growing the virtues of Faith, Hope, and Charity are simple. We gain Faith, Hope, and Charity by asking God for these gifs. This can be done by making the traditional Acts of Faith, Hope, and Charity in Prayer. St Paul writes, in short, there are there things that last: faith, hope, and love; and the greatest of these is love (1 Cor 13:13). Why is love the greatest virtue, fruit? The Apostle Paul teaches this truth because when we get to heaven, faith and hope will cease. Since faith is belief and trust in the unseen, faith will no longer be necessary, because in heaven we will see and possess God! Hope ends, because by being in heaven we can no longer desire what we already possess. But for all eternity we shall have charity: we can love God forever! How are the fruits of faith, hope, and love growing in our life? Are our branches withered or bearing fruit? Please pray for all children preparing to receive their First Holy Communion. May they remain in Christ the Vine all their life. May the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Good Help, help us with her maternal care, and may St. Joseph pray for us. Vivat Jesus! Live Jesus!
Z biurka Ks. Kto trwa we Mnie, a Ja w nim, ten przynosi owoc obfity.... Cnoty teologalne kształtują, pobudzają i charakteryzują działanie moralne chrześcijanina. Kształtują one i ożywiają wszystkie cnoty moralne. Vivat Iesus! Chwała Jezusowi!
