March 5, 2017 First Sunday of Lent St. Joseph Church, 7240 W. 57th St., Summit, Illinois 60501-1324 Lent is a good time to look upon and work on the habits of our life. Virtues are good habits and vices are bad habits.

Fr. Bob s Briefs Lent is here once again. Why do need to celebrate Lent every year? Since the early Church, Christians have prepared for the celebration of Christ s Resurrection with a period of penance. Lent is a good time to look upon and work on the habits of our life. What is a habit? A habit is an abiding disposition that inclines one to exercise a specific capacity in a certain manner. It is a change of who one is, with a resulting change in what one does. A habit is a character or disposition that is obtained by a person s own activity through the repetition of certain actions. Habits incline us to act consistently, spontaneously, and with corresponding intentions. Virtues are good habits, and vices are bad habits. Each virtue is named for the sort of activity being done well. Bad habits, on the other hand, are called vices. Vice is a bad moral habit. Vice is the strong tendency to bad, evil acts that are acquired through frequent repetition. Some qualities that characterize a vice, or bad habit, are spontaneity, ease, and satisfaction in doing what is morally wrong. Recently, another bad habit has reappeared in church. The bad habit that I am referring to is lighting votive candles in church without making an offering, or sacrificial donation. You may recall that we had a problem with this bad habit last year. Well, this bad habit has returned gradually over the course of weeks, and hit a very low point a week ago. Signs clearly mark $1 small candle offering. In one section of votive candles, 48 candles were lit, and only $26 were deposited in the offering box. In a second section of votive candles, 46 candles were lit, and $3 were deposited in the offering box, plus 4 quarters, 9 dimes, and 1 nickel. In a third section of votive candles, 28 candles were lit, and only $2 were deposited, plus a quarter and a nickel. By the picture of St. Pope John Paul II, we have 7 large candles, marked $3 per large candle. All 7 candles were lit, and only $2 were deposited in the box, plus 2 quarters, 3 dimes, and a nickel. I won t bother you with the countless pennies left by people. The disrespect for God and the church and the dishonesty is astonishing. As I mentioned before, candles cost money. We don t have little elves living beneath the choir making candles for us. We have to buy candles from a church supply company. In order to get candles from them, we have to pay for them. The money people are supposed to leave in the offering box is to help cover the cost of candles. Do you not have money to pay for the candles? Don t light a candle. Do you go to the store and just take buns, grapes, or anything without paying? Well, that s called stealing or shoplifting, and it s a crime. However, for God and the church, I get to light my candle for free. When you go shopping and bread costs $1.99, next time you go to the cashier, how about you just leave a few quarters and dimes? See if they let you leave with that loaf of bread? Yet, in church, it s alright if I throw in a few coins for the votive candles. I don t have to pay for God. Do you want to get a plastic bag now with your shopping in the city of Chicago? Well, it now costs you 7 cents per bag. You don t get if free? No, but in church, I can get my candle for free. When driving on the tollway, can you not pay your toll? No. You don t throw in the correct amount (and they don t take pennies either by the way), and the gate won t open; drive through without an IPass, and you will get a fine in the mail. However, paying for a candle in church, no I don t have to do that, or if I do, I ll just throw in some nickels and pennies! Try doing that next time you are driving on Interstate 355 or 294. Why do we treat God and the church worse than a store owner or the highway authorities? Lighting a votive candle without making the proper offering is stealing. Stealing is a bad habit. It is also dishonest. Dishonesty, too, is a bad habit. The whole point of a votive candle is to make an offering to God. However, if there is no offering made to God, then that lit candle serves no real point. The lit candle is empty, it s a lie because we did not sacrifice anything to God. What does God tell us in the Book of Sirach? Appear not before the LORD empty-handed, for all that you offer is in fulfillment of the precepts. The just one's offering enriches the altar and rises as a sweet odor before the Most High. The just one's sacrifice is most pleasing, nor will it ever be forgotten. In a generous spirit pay homage to the LORD, be not sparing of freewill gifts. Give to the Most High as he has given to you, generously. Did we forget what God told us the Bible? Perhaps we didn t read the Bible. Well, Lent is a good time to start reading the Bible. Did you pay attention to the First Reading at Mass today from the Book of Genesis? If you are reading the bulletin during Mass, I will tell you right now what is being said, so that you don t miss it. Did you hear about the Fall of Adam and Eve when they tried to take from God what was not theirs, as we see in this painting by Jacob Jordaens? How did that work out for them (and all of us)? Adam and Eve weren t the only ones taking from God. Did we forget the 10 Commandments? Does the Seventh Commandment sound familiar? You shall not steal. It is not a suggestion. We steal from God, but think that God will hear our prayer. Lent is good time to stop our bad habits. Lent is a good time to stop stealing from God and the church. Lent is a time of penance, sorrow, and contrition for our sins. So, we will not be having any candles in church for the near future, so that we can have sorrow and contrition for our bad habits and actions. Lent is a good time for us to form good habits. Seven good habits for faithful Catholics are: Morning Offering, the Rosary, receiving Communion, Bible/spiritual reading, Examination of Conscience, the Angelus, and mental prayer. Try it for the next forty days in preparation for Easter. May the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Good Help, help us with her prayers and St. Joseph pray for us. Vivat Jesus! Live Jesus!

Cada virtud se nombra para el tipo de actividad que se está haciendo bien. Los malos hábitos, por otra parte, se llaman vicios. El vicio es un mal hábito moral, es la fuerte tendencia a los actos malos malvados, que se adquieren a través de la repetición frecuente. Algunas cualidades que caracterizan a un vicio o mal hábito, son la espontaneidad, la facilidad y la satisfacción de hacer lo que es moralmente incorrecto. En una segunda sección de velas votivas, 46 velas fueron encendidas y $3 fueron depositados en la caja de ofrecimiento, más 4 monedas de a 0.25 centavos, 9 de a 0.10 y 1 de 0.05 centavosl. Quieres comprar una bolsa de plástico ahora con tus compras en la ciudad de Chicago? ahora nos cuestan 0.07 centavos por bolsa. No la consigues gratis? No, pero en la iglesia, puedo conseguir mi vela gratis. Al conducir en la autopista, debemos pagar el peaje? Claro!. Si usted no paga la cantidad correcta (y ellos no toman peniques por el camino) la puerta no se abrirá; Si conduce por la línea sin un IPass, obtendrá una multa en el correo. El propósito de una vela votiva es hacer una ofrenda a Dios. Sin embargo, si no se hace ninguna ofrenda a Dios, entonces esa vela encendida no sirve para el plan deseado. La vela encendida está vacía, es una mentira porque no sacrificamos nada a Dios. Qué nos dice Dios en el Libro de Sirach? "No aparezcan delante de Jehová con las manos vacías, porque todo lo que ustedes ofrecen es cumplimiento de los preceptos. La ofrenda justa enriquece el altar y se eleva como olor dulce ante el Altísimo. El sacrificio del justo es más agradable y nunca se olvidará. En un generoso espíritu rendir homenaje al SEÑOR, no desperdiciar los regalos de recibidos. Dale al Altísimo como te ha dado generosamente. " Hemos olvidado lo que Dios nos dijo en la Biblia? Tal vez no la leemos. Bueno, la Cuaresma es un buen momento para empezar a leerla. Prestaste atención a la Primera Lectura en la Misa hoy del Libro del Génesis? Si están leyendo el boletín durante la Misa, les diré ahora lo que se está diciendo, para que no se lo pierdan. Has oído hablar de la caída de Adán y Eva cuando trataron de quitarle a Dios lo que no era suyo, como vemos en esta pintura de Jacob Jordaens? Cómo funcionó eso para ellos (y para todos nosotros)? Adán y Eva no fueron los únicos que tomaron de Dios. Olvidamos los 10 mandamientos? Te suena familiar el Séptimo Mandamiento? No robarás. No es una sugerencia. Robamos a Dios, pero pensamos que Dios oirá nuestra oración. La Cuaresma es un buen momento para detener nuestros malos hábitos, es momento para dejar de robar a Dios y a la iglesia. La Cuaresma es un tiempo de penitencia, tristeza y contrición por nuestros pecados. Por lo tanto, no vamos a tener velas en la iglesia en un futuro cercano, para que podamos tener tristeza y contrición por nuestros malos hábitos y acciones. La Cuaresma es un buen momento para formar buenos hábitos. Siete buenos hábitos para los fieles católicos son: la ofrenda de la mañana, el rosario, la comunión, la lectura bíblica/espiritual, el examen de conciencia, el ángelus y la oración mental. Pruébalo durante los próximos cuarenta días en preparación para la Pascua. Que la Santísima Virgen María, Madre de Buena Ayuda, nos ayude con sus oraciones y San José ruegue por nosotros. Z biurka Ks. Proboszcza Rozpoczęliśmy znowu Wielki Post. Dlaczego co roku powinniśmy pościć w ten sposób? Chrześcijanie już od zarania Kościoła przygotowywali się do celebracji Zmartwychwstania Pańskiego, podejmując dłuższą pokutę. Okres wielkopostny sprzyja osobistemu rachunkowi sumienia, zastanowieniu się nad życiem oraz jego zmianą. Dotyczy to między innymi naszych codziennych przyzwyczajeń i nawyków. Zgodnie z oficjalną definicją, nawyk oznacza rutynowe, pozbawione refleksji działanie. Zespół takich działań tworzyć może grupowe lub jednostkowe zwyczaje. Jest to zautomatyzowana czynność (sposób zachowania, reagowania), którą nabywa się w wyniku ćwiczenia (głównie przez powtarzanie). Nawyki dzielą się na dobre i złe. Te dobre nazywane są czasem cnotami i warto je w sobie pielęgnować. Te złe zwane są inaczej nałogami lub słabościami. Są to zachowania złe z moralnego lub społecznego punktu widzenia. Charakteryzują się między innymi tym, że osoba, która tak się zachowuje, czerpie z tego satysfakcję lub przyjemność. Mówię o tym, gdyż zauważyłem ostatnio w kościele pewien zły zwyczaj. Chodzi o zapalanie świec bez zostawiania datku. Być może pamiętacie, że ten problem pojawił się już w zeszłym roku. Owy nawyk narastał u nas stopniowo na przestrzeni ostatnich tygodni i osiągnął apogeum jakiś tydzień temu. Przy mniejszych świecach znajduje się tabliczka, na której wyraźnie napisane jest, że kosztują one $1. W jednym rzędzie zapalono czterdzieści osiem świec, ale w pudełku znajdowało się tylko $26. W drugim rzędzie zapalono 46 świec, za które zapłacono jedynie $3, cztery 25-ciocentówki, dziewięć 10-ciocentówek i jedną 5- ciocentówkę. W trzecim rzędzie zapalono 28 świec, za które zapłacono $2, jedną 25-ciocentówką i jedną 5-ciocentówką. Z kolei przy obrazie świętego Jana Pawła II stoi siedem dużych świec (po $3 za świecę). Chociaż wszystkie były zapalone, zapłacono za nie ledwie $2, dwie 25- ciocentówki, trzy 10-ciocentówki i jedną 5-ciocentówkę. Niezliczoną ilość 1- i 2-centówek pozostawię bez komentarza. Zatrważająca jest taka nieuczciwość, jawny brak szacunku dla Boga i parafii. Każda z naszych świec kosztuje. Nie posiadamy niestety armii małych elfów, w ukryciu wykonujących dla nas świece. Świece dostarcza nam firma z dewocjonaliami, której musimy za to płacić. Sumy widniejące na tabliczkach mają pokryć koszt zakupu świec. Możecie zapłacić za zapalone świece? Jeśli nie, nie zapalajcie ich. Czy tak samo postępujecie na zakupach w sklepie bierzecie interesujące Was artykuły spożywcze i wychodzicie bez płacenia za nie? Coś takiego nazywa się kradzieżą i jest przestępstwem. Ale jeśli chodzi o Boga i kościół, ofiarę mogę przecież złożyć za darmo. Kupcie w sklepie chleb, a przy kasie spróbujcie zapłacić drobnymi. Na pewno Wam nie pozwolą. Ale w kościele nic się nie dzieję, jeśli za świecę płacę drobnymi lub nie płacę wcale. Bogu nie muszę płacić. Jeśli chcesz w sklepie zapakować zakupy w plastikową torbę, musisz zapłacić za nią 7 centów, czyli nie jest gratis. Jednak w kościele świece można zapalać za darmo. Chcąc korzystać z niektórych dróg, trzeba wnieść określoną opłatę (myto). W przeciwnym razie nie pojedziecie dalej, bo szlaban się nie podniesie. I zapewniam, płaci się wyłącznie banknotami! Spróbujcie nie zapłacić za przejazd autostradą międzystanową Interstate nr 355 lub 294... Dlaczego Boga i kościół traktujemy gorzej niż właściciela sklepu spożywczego lub zarząd dróg? Zapalenie świecy ofiarnej bez zostawienia datku jest kradzieżą. Kradzież zaś to zło i nieuczciwość. Zapalona świeca stanowi ofiarę dla Boga. Jeżeli jednak za świecę (w której wykonanie włożono wiele czasu i wysiłku) nie zapłacimy, jej zapalenie mija się z celem. Zapalona świeca nie ma znaczenia, gdyż nie ofiarowaliśmy niczego Panu. W Księdze Syracha (35:4-9) napisano: Nie ukazuj się przed Panem z próżnymi rękami, wszystko to bowiem [dzieje się] według przykazania. Dar ofiarny sprawiedliwego namaszcza ołtarz tłustością, a przyjemny jej zapach unosi się przed Najwyższego. Ofiara męża sprawiedliwego jest przyjemna, a pamięć o niej nie pójdzie w zapomnienie. Chwal Pana hojnym darem i nie zmniejszaj ofiary z pierwocin rąk twoich! Przy każdym darze twarz twoją rozpogódź i z weselem poświęć dziesięcinę! Dawaj Najwyższemu tak, jak On ci daje, hojny dar według swej możności! Czyżbyśmy zapomnieli o Słowie Bożym? Być może dawno nie czytaliśmy Pisma Świętego. Wielki Post jest doskonałą okazją do tego, aby to zmienić. Zwróciliście uwagę na dzisiejsze pierwsze czytanie z Księgi Rodzaju? Jeżeli czytacie ten biuletyn w trakcie Mszy, opowiem Wam dzisiejsze kazanie, aby nic Wam nie umknęło. Epizod, o którym jest mowa, widnieje na tym obrazie autorstwa Jacoba Jordaensa. Chodzi o Upadek Adama i Ewy, którzy sięgnęli po coś, co nie należało do nich. Jak to się dla nich (i dla wszystkich) skończyło? Adam i Ewa nie są jedynymi, którzy okradają Boga. Czyżbyśmy zapomnieli o Dziesięciu Przykazaniach, a zwłaszcza o Siódmym? Brzmi ono: Nie kradnij. To jest rozkaz. Okradamy Boga, jednocześnie mając nadzieję, że wysłucha naszych modlitw. Wielki Post jest idealnym czasem na to, aby wykorzenić złe nawyki. Na to, aby przestać kraść. Wielki Post to czas pokuty i żalu za grzechy. W najbliższej przyszłości nie będzie w kościele żadnych świec ofiarnych. Pozwoli nam to lepiej skupić się na żalu za nasze grzechy. Okres wielkopostny sprzyja kultywowaniu w sobie dobrych nawyków. Katolicy mogą podjąć w tym celu siedem praktyk: poranna Ofiara, modlitwa różańcowa, przyjmowanie Komunii Świętej, lektura Biblii/żywotów świętych, rachunek sumienia, modlitwa Anioł Pański, oraz modlitwa mentalna. Spróbujcie stosować te praktyki przez kolejne 40 dni. Święta Maryjo, Matko Nieustającej Pomocy, miej nas zawsze w Swojej opiece. Święty Józefie, módl się za nami. Vivat Iesus! Chwała Jezusowi!

Yesterday at 11:00 a.m. our First Communion Class from our school and RE program received the sacrament of Reconciliation an important step in their spiritual development. Next Saturday, March 11 th we will have our Mother/Son Dance. The theme is SUPERHEROS. Our Athletic Association is very busy with our sports teams. Both are Kindergarten and First & Second Grade Teams made it to the second rounds of the playoffs. Both teams are making a run at the St. Mary Soccer Championship. Our Volleyball teams likewise have made it to the second round of the playoffs with our JV team playing Monday at Wentworth and Varsity playing on Tuesday at Hale Park. Times are not set, please call the school on Monday for starting times. Last Friday, February 24 th, 95 children (29 of our own), attended our Chess Tournament. The children came from ten different schools. Two of our children Giovanni Garcia and Josue Garcia trophied, with Giovanni taking 3 rd place in the 4&5 Division and Josue taking 5 th place in the 2&3 Division. The team competition is as follows: K&1 Division First Place - Noonan Academy, Second Place - St. Joseph, Summit, Third Place - St. Al s & St. Pat s. 2&3 Division First Place Kinzie, Second Place St. Joseph, Summit, Third Place St. Joseph, Lockport. 4&5 Division First Place St. Joseph, Summit, Second Place - St. Joseph, Lockport, Third Place - St. Alexander. 6&8 Division First Place -St. Joseph, Summit, Second Place - St. Joseph, Lockport, Third Place Kinzie. ARCHER AVE., SUMMIT IS STEPPIN OUT To enjoy the beginning of spring at THE CHICAGO BOTANIC GARDENS ORCHID SHOW TUESDAY, MARCH 21, 2017 The group will begin the day with a concert, Morning Music with the Orchids, by the Silverwood Duo. Participants are invited to bring their cameras to take pictures of the biggest flower show of the year. They will view over 10,000 orchids blooming all at once. The group will have time to explore the park and its attractions on its own. A buffet lunch will be served by CulinaryLandscape. The bus leaves at 8 a.m. and returns at 3:30 p.m. to the Foran Funeral Home parking lot, 7300 W. Archer Ave. The cost is $66 per person, which includes the tour and lunch.
