4 l Welcome to St. Thomas Becket Catholic Community From Music Director Paula Kowalkowski During this month of November, the Church reminds us to remember those who have gone before us - marked with the sign of faith. The Feasts of All Saint's and All Soul's Days help us do this. How many holy men and women have graced our lives? I can remember my dear Grandma Rosie - a woman of faith and abounding hospitality. Her door was always open; there was enough food for everyone who visited her and her arms held us with great hugs filled with love. I remember my dear husband who passed away much too soon last year of a sudden heart attack. John was a true Renaissance man - interested in everything life had to offer! He was a computer technician by day - but on his off-hours, he was a musician, judo master, banjo player and volleyball player. He was curious about different cultures, languages and science fiction. John loved my daughter and me well and is truly missed. One of the ways we can remember our loved ones is through Mass intentions. The Archdiocese of Chicago says 203.1.1. Policy - the custom of giving offerings to have Masses said for specific intentions is a laudable one and shall be maintained as much as possible. A $10 PER INTENTION/PRAYER REQUEST/NAME is established by the Archdiocese. This is a way for our parish to pray together and build the Kingdom as a community in Christ. This past Monday evening, our parish community came together to remember all of those dear ones who have left this physical space. As we celebrated the Feast of All Souls in a beautiful bi-lingual Mass, we remembered our spouses, parents, children, siblings, friends and neighbors. We thought about their holy lives filled with love, generosity, big hugs and beautiful smiles. How we miss them - how grateful we are to have known them, to have loved them. A special thank you to the Bereavement Ministry who helped plan the liturgy, sent out invitations, organized the reception and was a prayerful presence at the Remembrance Mass. Ilu świętych mężczyzn i kobiet znaliśmy w naszym życiu? Pamiętam moją babcie Rosie - kobieta wiary i zawsze gościnna. Jej drzwi były zawsze otwarte; było zawsze wystarczająco u niej jedzenia, była zawsze gotowa na przytulenie wypełnione miłością. Pamiętam mojego drogiego męża, który zmarł nagle na atak serca w zeszłym roku. John był prawdziwym człowiekiem renesansu - zainteresowany wszystkim co życie ma do zaoferowania! Był technikiem komputerowym ale poza godzinami pracy był muzykiem, mistrzem judo i grał w siatkówkę. Był ciekaw różnych kultur i języków. John kochał moją córkę i mnie i naprawdę jest nam go brak. Jednym ze sposobów w jaki upamiętniamy naszych bliskich to przez ofiarowanie intencji mszalnych. Bardzo doniosłym jest, że nasza Archidiecezja Chicagowska określa Polisa 203,1,1 - Zwyczaj dawania ofiar na określoną intencję podczas Mszy Św. jest chwalebny i powinien być stosowany jak najczęściej. Dalej mówi o ważności jałmużny i dzielenia się darami, z których ofiary na Msze Św. są najwspanialszą formą. $10 od INTENCJI/od OSOBY jest ustaloną ofiarą przez diecezje. Jest to sposób aby nasza parafia modliła się razem i budowała Królestwo jako wspólnota w Chrystusie. W miniony poniedziałek wieczorem obchodziliśmy Dzień Zaduszny. Pamiętaliśmy podczas pięknej dwujęzycznej Mszy Św. naszych małżonków, rodziców, dzieci, rodzeństwo, przyjaciół i sąsiadów. Wspominaliśmy ich życie wypełnione miłością, wielkodusznością, uściskami i uśmiechem. Pamiętamy i jesteśmy wdzięczni, że byli w naszym życiu, i że ich kochaliśmy. Serdeczne podziękowania kieruję do osób, które pomagały w planowaniu liturgii i organizacji poczęstunku po Mszy Św. We Remember Them In the rising of the sun and in its going down, we remember them. In the flowing of the wind and in the chill of the winter, we remember then. In the warmth of the sun and in the peace of summer, we remember them. In the rustling of the leaves and the beauty of autumn, we remember them. In the beginning of the year and when it ends, we remember them. When we are weary and in need of strength, we remember them. When we are lost and sick at heart, we remember them. When we have joys we yearn to share, we remember them. So as long as we live, they too shall live, for they are now a part of us, as we remember them.

IT S TURKEY DELIVERY TIME AGAIN For the past 2 years, St. Thomas Becket volunteers have picked up and delivered frozen turkeys with trimmings to donate to the hungry in the northwest suburbs. Each 40lb. box has a 10lb frozen turkey and all the trimmings. This year we get 20 boxes to bring to Northwest Compass in Mt. Prospect. We need volunteers, preferably with pickup trucks, SUVs or vans to help drive, load and unload boxes of turkeys. On 11/22, the Sunday before Thanksgiving, we will meet at Northwest Compass, 1300 W. Northwest Hgwy. at 930am. Then motorcade to the Buona Beef factory in Glendale Heights to pick up boxes at 1045am. From there we drive back to Northwest Compass. There we will unload all boxes and store at that location. Compass will distribute the turkeys/trimmings starting on Monday. If you would like to officially join our parish please stop by any time during open hours at the parish office to register. BAPTISMS In order to prepare for their child s Baptism, parents are asked to attend Baptismal Preparation. Sessions in Polish are held on the first Sunday of each month in Polish at 8:45 am in the Rectory. Sessions in English are by appointment. Please call the rectory at least 1 month in advance to make arrangements. Baptism is celebrated on the 1st Sunday of the month in English. Baptisms in Polish take place on the 2nd Sunday and the 4th Saturday of each month please check the availability of dates with the parish office first. WEDDINGS Couples preparing for marriage should make an appointment to meet with the pastor to set their wedding date before they commit themselves to a date for a banquet hall. This appointment must be made at least six months before their wedding date. Couples are required to participate in Marriage Preparation Sessions (PreCana), which are available either through the Archdiocese or our own Marriage Prep program. Weddings are celebrated on Fridays and Saturdays. SACRAMENT OF PENANCE Friday: 6:15pm-6:45pm, Saturday: 3:30-4:15pm or by appointment at the rectory anytime. As we celebrate Veterans Day, I'm wondering what should be the Christian attitude in resorting to violence to resolve conflicts? Veterans are rightly honored for their role in defending the country, especially in time of conflict and violence. Yet, resorting to violence as a means of trying to resolve human conflicts is not the Christian way to deal with relationships. Jesus models the image of God in which all are valued and cherished as God's children, no matter who they are or which side they are on. In times of war and military struggles, it is difficult to make these kinds of distinctions. Yet distinctions have to be made, and values have to be examined in determining what justice demands. Sometimes violence may be justified, but only as a means of last resort, when all possible options have been exhausted, and when greater harm might result. Those who fight and defend under such circumstances must be supported, cared for, valued, and honored. At the same time, institutions who declare that violence is the only means left to resolve a conflict have to examine continuously their motives and agendas. Those who push institutions to such deep self-examination should be as valued as those who are defending the institution. Both play important and necessary roles, and as such both are truly patriotic. Such tensions prevent blind nationalistic slogans like "our country, right or wrong" from seeing the light of day.
