Page Four 100 YEARS A CENTURY OF FAITH We, as a parish community, will be celebrating 100 years of existence in 2016. Events all year long are in the early planning stages, with our kickoff event coming this October. Please save the date, Sunday, October 11, 2015 for International-Octoberfest. This program offers tutoring in reading, writing, and speaking of English to immigrant women, on a one-to-one basis (one student with one tutor). Classes are once a week, for an hour and ½ session (from September to June). Four consecutive and informative training sessions will be held on the evenings of Aug. 18 (Tuesday), Aug. 20 (Thursday), Aug. 24 (Monday), and Aug. 26 (Wednesday). These will be held at the Dominican Literacy Center, beginning at 6:30pm. Participants need to attend ALL four sessions. Page Five A 12FROM THE SWP MUSIC MINISTRY The adult choir, children's choir, cantors, and instrumentalists would like to thank Saint William Parish for your constant support! The beauty of being a Roman Catholic is the rich history and tradition that spans 2000 years of salvation. One of these jewels in Catholicism is our vast repertoire of music that is both classic and continually evolving. We have a beautiful pipe organ that sings the instrumental hymns of Machaut and Bach and a talented and very committed adult choir singing simple works by Cesar Frank, Mozart, and Holst. I can t eloquently express how proud we should be of the talent that comes forth from this SWP community. Those of you that have worshipped at the noon mass have noticed the formative beginning of a contemporary music ensemble. Hopefully, as we organize and obtain resources, we will minister at different masses. As of now, Sunday 12pm mass is the contemporary ensemble s primary ministry. It s nice to put names to faces and to know where these young adults came from. I think you will be very proud to know that almost all of them are graduates of our own Saint William s School! If you hear them providing prayerful music during Holy Mass and are moved by their music, please feel free to approach them to greet and meet! Mark Latocha (Percussion) and Filip Latocha (Double-Bass/Bass Guitar) are brothers who both graduated from SWS in 05 and 07 respectively. Tyler Castillo (Guitar) graduated from SWS 12. Caitin Flanagan (Cantor) graduated 08 from SWS and Kasey Walsh, SWS Class of 13. Tosiek Radzik, although not a SWS alum, loves sharing his talent with the Saint William Parish community. He is a student at the Chicago College of Performing Arts (Roosevelt University). I am personally proud to say that they are all graduates of Guerin Prep HS (except for Tyler who is a Senior and Kasey, a Junior-almost there :-D)! Last week, I conveyed in the bulletin that we need $600 to begin a move from the choir loft to the underutilized area near the sanctuary where there is much more space. Unfortunately, we do not have the proper sound equipment to move the ensemble to that area. Would you please help us? We are also planning to purchase a drum set for Saint William Parish. The drum set we are currently using belongs to Guerin Prep and must return to its home very soon. THANK YOU to those who have donated and continue to do so. W IEBOWZIĘCIE MP czyli MATKI BOŻEJ ZIEL EJ W przyszłą sobotę, 15 sierpnia będziemy obchodzić piękną Uroczystość Wniebowzięcia Najświętszej Maryi Panny, nazywaną także Świętem Matki Bożej Zielnej. W naszej parafii św. Williama będzie specjalna Msza św. o godz. 7pm z poświęceniem ziół i kwiatów. Warto przy tej okazji dowiedzieć się trochę o tym święcie. Wniebowzięcie Najświętszej Maryi Panny to dogmat naszej wiary ogłoszony przez papieża Piusa XII w dniu 1 listopada 1950 roku bullą Munificentissimus Deus, który stwierdza, że Maryja została wzięta do nieba z ciałem i duszą po zakończeniu jej ziemskiego życia. Z tą maryjną uroczystością związana jest starożytna tradycja liturgiczna, oddająca hołd Maryi wraz z poświęceniem na Jej cześć leczniczych ziół. Od IX wieku w uroczystość Wniebowzięcia poświęca się zioła, kwiaty, kłosy zbóż i owoce. Zioła mają swą leczniczą moc, a kwiaty wprawiają w zachwyt kolorystyką barw i zapachem. Maryja jest najpiękniejszym kwiatem ludzkości. Jest też lekarstwem na nasze choroby duszy i ciała. W polskiej pobożności i tradycji ludowej uroczystość Wniebowzięcia zwana jest także Świętem Matki Boskiej Zielnej. Przynosimy wówczas do świątyni do poświęcenia zioła i kwiaty. Kapłan, błogosławiąc zioła, prosi Boga: Zachowaj je od zniszczenia, aby wzrastały, radowały oczy, przynosiły jak najobfitszy plon i mogły służyć zdrowiu ludzi i zwierząt. A gdy będziemy schodzić z tego świata, niechaj nas, niosących pełne naręcza dobrych uczynków, przedstawi Tobie ajświętsza Dziewica Wniebowzięta, najdoskonalszy owoc ziemi, abyśmy zasłużyli na przyjęcie do wiecznego szczęścia. Wniebowzięcie kieruje nasze myśli ku niebu. Pragnienie osiągnięcia nieba leży w naturze człowieka. Uczestnictwo w uroczystości Wniebowzięcia pozwala nam doświadczyć bliskości Maryi.
