August 31, 2014 22nd Ordinary Sunday Page Four The Church as sacrament Vatican II reminded us of the biblical roots of the word "sacrament," namely, the wonderful, mysterious plan of God to save us through Christ Jesus. Sacraments are the visible, tangible manifestations of God's plan of salvation. They reveal what God is about and who God is. The fullness of this revelation is found in Jesus of Nazareth. We speak of Jesus as the "original" or "primal" sacrament; in him the invisible God became visible. As a stone dropped into a pond causes ripples to go out in ever larger circles, our understanding of sacrament starts with Jesus, then includes the Church, the Eucharist, the other sacraments and sacramentals, until all creation is caught up in the wonderful revelation of the Creator. Jesus passed through death to resurrection and breathed the Pentecost Spirit into the disciples. The Church that grew out of the faith of the first Christians is the ongoing presence of Christ in our world. The Church, the "Body of Christ," is called to be a sacrament, a sign and instrument of salvation. The Council reminded us that the seven sacraments not only give grace but also build up the Body of Christ and are acts of worship. Because sacraments pertain to the whole Church, the Council stressed, "whenever rites...make provision for communal celebration involving the presence and active participation of the faithful, this way of celebrating them is to be preferred" (Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, Sacrosanctum Concilium, #27). Sacraments that were once celebrated privately are now often celebrated publicly at Sunday Eucharist or in other communal settings. For example, when an infant is baptized, the Baptism is not just for the baby; it is a communal act of worship and an occasion of grace for the whole community. We seem to have more questions about the sacraments today than we had before the Council: What is the proper age for Confirmation? Will the individual rite of Confession disappear altogether? What will happen to marriage and family life if annulments continue to increase in number? How can we remain a Eucharistic Church with fewer priests? But rather than wringing our hands, we need to demonstrate the same hope and courage that the Holy Spirit inspired at the Council. The bishops stated, "...the Church constantly moves forward toward the fullness of divine truth" (Constitution on Divine Revelation, #8). We have not yet arrived; we are still on the journey. The road may be difficult at times, but with the faith of St. Paul we are confident "that the one who began a good work in you will continue to complete it until the day of Christ Jesus" (Philippians 1:6). www.americancatholic.org

Welcome to a New Year of Girl Scouting Welcome back to our returning Girl Scouts and Adult Volunteers, and welcome to all girls in grades K 12 who are interested in becoming part of this long running program. The Girl Scouts of the USA are over 100 years old and Girl Scouting at St. Ferdinand has been going strong for almost 70 years! We offer development for girls in life skills, science, sports, the arts, the outdoors, travel, and leadership. Our troop leaders have decades of experience among them and most were Girl Scouts themselves. Because our scout families come from many neighborhood schools, our troop meetings are held on Thursday evenings (our high school troop meets on Tuesdays). We will hold a Parent & Girl Information Night on Thursday, September 4th, from 7pm to 8pm in the convent basement on the corner of Mason & Barry. Please come meet our Leaders, our current scouts, and find out how to register your girl in Girl Scouting, pay dues, order uniforms, and how adults can also get involved. COR S CORNER Please remember our Food Pantry when you shop this weekend The foods we give out (all nonperishable), cereals, rice, soups, canned vegetables and meats, tuna fish, crackers, coffee, tea, jello and puddings (the kinds to cook and ones in individual containers), canned fruits, tomato sauce and pasta. We have a freezer now and welcome any frozen foods. But they can't be left in church and chapel, they must be brought to the COR office at the Convent on Mondays (the office is open from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30p.m.). People ask for toilet tissue, paper towels, shampoo and laundry and bar soap and sugar...which when we have any, we gladly give out. On the first Saturday and Sunday of the month (September 6/7) please drop the purchased items when you come to the church. Of course, any time we are grateful to receive food donations. This is just to let you know, what the Food Pantry needs to give out to people who come for help. Our Food Pantry is open once a week, every Monday 10AM 11AM in the convent building. Provides food emergencies to all families in need. A parishioner is in need of a cane (metal, single and adjustable). August 31, 2014 22nd Ordinary Sunday Page Eight INVITATION TO JOIN THE MEMORIAL BRICK PROJECT AROUND THE STATUE OF THE BLESSED MOTHER The place on our property around the statue of the Blessed Mother is special because it commemorates our parishioners who have died during war. On Memorial Day each year, by the statue, we pray and we remember our hero parishioners who fought in many different corners of the world for peace and freedom, and have sacrificed their lives for God and country. During the months dediated to Blessed Mother, May and October, on each Saturday we pray together by at that statue, to praise Mary, Mother of God and ask for her care and through her intercession for our community and our families. Everyday, many people stop by the statue to reflect and pray. At the suggestion and initiative of the Polish Rosary Groups we would like to restore, clean up and fix up this site, lay brick stones, put up benches, plant flowers and trees around this very special place. This project will give us and our entire St. Ferdinand community a great opportunity to honor or memorialize a loved one. If you would like to leave a lasting remembrance, we invite you to participate in this project! It will be a special place to remember anyone and make a path for those who come after you and forever to stay in the hearts of St. Ferdinand families. W tym dniu w naszym kościele zostanie odprawiona tylko jedna Msza św. o godz. 9:00 rano. Nie będzie mszy św. o godz. 8:00 rano, 12:00 i 7:00 wieczorem. Biuro parafialne będzie NIECZYNNE. DZISIAJ ODPUST I FESTYN POD FIGURKĄ MATKI BOŻEJ Koła Żywego Różańca zapraszają do uczczenia Święta Matki Boskiej Częstochowskiej, które obchodziliśmy w ostatni wtorek, 26 sierpnia. Uroczysta Msza św. z procesja o godz. 10:15am po czym odpust i festyn na posesji naszego kościoła pod figurką Matki Boskiej Częstochowskiej. Jasnogórskie Sanktuarium od stuleci odgrywało szczególną rolę w życiu i religijności narodu polskiego. Może najmocniej sformułował jego rolę Papież Jan Paweł II w przemówieniach tamże w czasie swych pielgrzymek do Ojczyzny. Jasna Góra to "sanktuarium narodu" (1979). "Przyzwyczaili się Polacy wszystkie sprawy swojego życia [...] wiązać z tym miejscem" (1979). Także sprawy narodowego bytu. Było to miejsce gdzie, jak wyznawał Maryi, "od wieków ludzie przychodzili do Ciebie po wolność i przy Tobie nawet w czasach niewoli czuli się wolnymi" (1991). Ten status Jasnej Góry Prymas Wyszyński umiał wykorzystać, czyniąc Jasną Górę duchowym centrum programu Wielkiej Nowenny przygotowującej Milenium chrześcijaństwa w Polsce (1966). Wyniki, jak sam wyznaje, przeszły jego oczekiwania: "okazało się, że Jasna Góra jest spoidłem życia narodu". Modlitwa do Matki Boskiej Częstochowskiej O Maryjo, nasza, droga Pani Częstochowska, spójrz łaskawie na Twoje dzieci w tym udręczonym i grzesznym świecie. Obejmij nas Swoją kochającą i Macierzyńska opieką. Broń naszej młodzieży od bezbożnych ścieżek; pomóż naszym drogim dzieciom dożyć sędziwego wieku, aby się przygotowały do podróży do domu; osłoń nasze bezbronne, nienarodzone dzieci od horroru aborcji i bądź naszą siłą przeciw wszystkim grzechom. Pan Jezus pokazując jej swoje Serce pełne ognia, rzekł do niej: Moje Boskie Serce tak płonie miłością ku ludziom, że nie może dłużej utrzymać tych płomieni gorejących, zamkniętych w moim łonie. Ono pragnie rozlać je za twoim pośrednictwem i pragnie wzbogacić ludzi swoimi Bożymi skarbami. Pan Jezus dał św. Małgorzacie Alacoque dwanaście obietnic, dotyczących czcicieli Jego Serca: Dam im łaski, potrzebne w ich stanie. Ustalę pokój w ich rodzinach. Będę ich pocieszał w utrapieniach. Będę ich pewną ucieczką w życiu, a szczególnie w godzinę śmierci. Będę im błogosławił w ich przedsięwzięciach. Grzesznicy znajdą w mym Sercu źródło i ocean miłosierdzia. Dusze oziębłe staną się gorliwymi. Dusze gorliwe prędko dojdą do doskonałości. Będę błogosławił domom, w których wizerunek Serca mojego będzie czczony. Osoby, które będą to nabożeństwo rozszerzały, będą miały imię swoje wypisane w Sercu moim. Dam kapłanom dar wzruszania serc nawet najzatwardzialszych. Zapraszamy!

W tym dniu z ogromnym bólem przyjęliśmy wiadomość o naglej śmierci 57 letniego Prezesa Klubu: Stanisława Kowalkowskiego. August 31, 2014 22nd Ordinary Sunday Page Thirteen My friend Mirek and his daughter Veronica and I all participated in our first ½ Ironman Triathlon two weeks ago at Benton Harbor, MI: Steelhead 70.3. The 70.3 refers to the total mileage of the race s three individual components. The ½ Ironman swimming leg is 1.2 miles. The biking leg is 56 miles. The running leg is 13.1 miles. As one guy told me later, That s a serious tri! No argument here. The swim was especially tough because of the 1 2 swells coming at us the entire way. I was hyperventilating through the first ½ mile. Mirek and Veronica and others I spoke with at day s end had similar things to say. The bike portion and the run were tough, too, mostly because of the hills (nothing really steep, but lots of them). We all brought it home, though, and when we got together for dinner after the tri to share our stories, my wife a spectator had one of her own To watch Mirek and Veronica and me transition from the bike portion to the run portion, Gail positioned herself just before the final turn on the bike course leading to the actual bike/run transition area. From this vantage point, she saw several bikers go by, and it was here that she overheard three snippets of (unrelated) biker ly conversation. The first was a biker who, when he saw the finishing banner signaling the end of those 56 miles, said to another biker pulling alongside, I m always ready to get off this bike! Several minutes later again, Gail heard the final snippet, this from a solo biker who, when he saw the finish, said simply, but with intensity, like he meant it, Thank you, Jesus! One guy wants off the bike. One guy wants to stay on. One guy thanks God for helping with the miles. But for each athlete out there, this was something we all agreed to. As one spectator s sign put it cruelly, I thought with about five (running) miles to go, Remember. You paid to do this! Yes we did, and this signing up for the pain comes to mind as I consider today s Gospel. First, Jesus predicts his Passion and Peter will hear nothing of it. Jesus chides him, and then follows with five takes on discipleship. The gist is that this is no easy road. Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me, Jesus says. Look. Nobody wants the cross. Not even Jesus. But he carried his anyway, and he calls each of us to do the same. Perhaps we haven t paid for the privilege, but, like Jesus, we have signed up for it in one way or another. We don t always succeed. We fail often. But we journey on. Jesus says that whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, and whoever loses it for his sake, will find it. Covering 70.3 or just doing the best we can each day while ever recalling that Christ is at the core it s good to be in the game. Thank you, Jesus! the biker said.
