Are the Ashes we are about to place on our foreheads a direct contradiction of the Gospel? In a fundamentalist sense, obviously yes; but if we read the Gospels as a whole, we realize that what is forbidden is not this or that action, but the attitude of acting only in order to attract attention, of giving the appearance of devotion and uprightness. Instead, we impose ashes on each other in order to support and encourage each other in our attempts at conversion: It is easier to abstain from meat and to fast today, when we know that Catholics and other Christians are also trying to do the same; throughout the six Sundays and forty fast days of Lent we know that others are making similar efforts at penance and conversion as we are. Together, we encourage each other to be drawn forward in turning our hearts to Christ, to conforming ourselves to his image already present in us. We know from past experience, however, that we are likely to struggle to maintain the penance we have chosen for ourselves. If we fail, temporarily, it doesn t make our Lenten penances pointless, like the New Year Resolutions abandoned some weeks ago. During Lent, our efforts show us how far we can strive to reform and renew our lives and also show us the limits of what we are able to achieve ourselves. Our efforts take us to a new space in which we can receive the Lord s gift of himself at Easter, which takes us far beyond what we can do for ourselves. However, unless we make some efforts ourselves, unless we reach out our hand to Christ s forgiving and healing hand, we cannot be lifted up by him at Easter. Unless we do our part to make ourselves ready to receive him, we may not notice him as he passes by. At the same time, we need to keep an open ear and a watchful eye, to notice the moment of his approach; if we are trying too hard to be ready for him, focusing too much on ourselves, we might also miss him as he passes by. The three Lenten practices of prayer, fasting and almsgiving, highlighted by the Gospel, interact in our lives to make us watchful and attentive to how he is coming to meet us each day of Lent. When we stumble in our efforts, we will feel his hand lifting us up, whispering in our ear, encouraging us to keep going and not to worry, we will be opened up to experience his healing, forgiveness and reconciliation. Once we have experienced it, we will, in our turn, become ambassadors of Reconciliation to others, when they stumble, encouraging them to get up and keep going, not to worry, but instead to trust in his mercy and in his healing. Ten sposo b powinien ułatwic wpłaty I rejestracje Roczna składka wynosi: rodzina: $15.00 osoba stanu wolnego: $10.00 seniorzy (65+), młodzi ludzie (18-25): $5.00 WIELKOPOSTNA REFLEKSJA W Środę Popielcową, w trakcie posypywania głów popiołem, kapłan wypowiada słowa z Pisma Świętego.
