The choir strikes up O Come All Ye Faithful, and I remember what I told myself I would do: sing the Latin lyrics. The choir is singing in English, but that doesn t matter. It is the same song of joy, no matter the language. Adeste fideles, laeti triumphantes I begin in the purest voice I can muster. Venite, venite in Bethlehem As I sing and proclaim the true message of Christmas along with the rest of the congregation, I look around the church as I have so many times when I was here to help put up decorations. Twined around every pillar that stretches up toward the vault of the ceiling are lengths of deep green pin roping, decorated with little, shining spheres of red, silver and blue. The roping fills the whole church with its rich, tangy smell, bringing to mind images of hidden Winter forests, hushed by a blanket of gleaming snow. Near the tops of the pillars are more lifelike statues like the ones at the Nativity, mounted on wooden pedestals which jut out from the columns. Hanging on hooks from these are beautiful bouquets of scarlet poinsettias, their red petals contrasting gorgeously with the rich green of their leaves and the white of the satiny ribbons dangling from them. To complete the stunning image is a large wreath on the pulpit, adorned with white flowers with golden centers. Now, as the choir rings out the second verse of O Come All Ye Faithful, our procession reaches the Advent wreath hanging from the star-studded ceiling. The bells dangling from the streamers carried by four servers behind me chime merrily as I look up at the great circle of garland suspended above us. There are five candles, each beautiful gold and ornately carved: four around the outside edges of the wreath for the four weeks of Advent, and one smaller one in the middle for Christmas. Their flames flicker as cheerfully as the one in Mordecai s lantern, seemingly saying, As the angels once told certain poor shepherds, do not be afraid. Rejoice, for this is a night of triumph and gladness.! We have arrived at the Main altar now. The smoky sweet smell of incense permeates the air so richly that I can almost taste it. I know it will linger on my clothes and skin for hours afterward. All around are the Christmas trees and more candles, blazing forth their golden light, so strong that it makes the whole church glow. There are more white poinsettias on one of the lower steps, ringed by golden-orange lights and surrounding an icon of the Madonna and Child. We ascend the steps of the altar, the organ swelling and the choir now proclaiming the third joyous verse. I don t even know the Latin lyrics to this part, nor does it seem to matter anymore. I have long since succumbed to the elation in the air, my heart, soul, and mind completely to the beauty of Christmas and the baby Jesus. All I want to do now is sing and declare the joyful message that O Come All ye Faithful holds for all to hear. And as I listen to myself intone the words, it seems that my voice is almost...a bit more pure than usual tonight. Just like the inexplicable dancing of the flame in Mordecai s lantern, I can t fathom how this could be. A person s singing voice doesn t become flawless on the spot; it takes years of training and natural talent, and while mine is far from perfect, it s definitely better than normal. And suddenly, I find the answer doesn t really matter, if there is one at all. I have the talents I have, and nothing more or less. It is those blessings and the blessing of being able to celebrate Christmas in such a beautiful church among family and friends, that will truly count in the end and make my soul more content than it has been in a long time. PASTORAL MESSAGE January January 3 17 Stycznia Stycznia 2010 2010 RUNNING OUT OF WINE Today s Sunday gospel reading detailing the wedding feast at Cana in Galilee is one of the most popular and memorable events recorded in all of Scripture. It should have mass appeal since it deals with the married state the state in life embraced by a vast majority of people. There are two contrasting views of marriage the one es-poused by the wimpy, world-minded and the one preached by Jesus. Only too often has the married state been derided and ridiculed by our present talent-impoverished comedians. We know that there is a big difference between a wedding and a marriage. The first one is a simple ritual performed in church or elsewhere; the second is the embracing of a commitment to remain faithful and loving to one s spouse for life. But, some genius once said that marriage requires a man to prepare four types of rings : The Engagement Ring; The Wedding Ring; The Suffe-Ring; The Endu-Ring. Ladies, please hang in till you read this little anecdote: God saw Adam sitting in the Garden of Eden, downcast and lonely. So, God gave him a mate, Eve. Even after this Adam was still unhappy. God asked him why and Adam replied: Why did you have to give me a woman so beautiful? Because, God answered, I wanted you to love her. Oh, said Adam, but why did you make her so stupid? Because, God answered, I wanted her to love you! Now we turn to the beautiful scene at Cana the tender role that the Mother of Jesus plays. She notices that the couple ran out of wine doubly embarassing in the East where there is a great emphasis on attention and hospitality. Six giant water jars each containing 30 gallons are filled to the brim. Then, Jesus is invited by his Mother to use his divine power to change this water into wine. This event signifies the Water of the Old Testament ritual of marriage with all its Mosaic legal implications as contrasted by the Wine of the New Testament sacrament of marriage over-flowing with the love of God, Father, Son and Spirit. Jesus changed water into wine. He changed the old into the new: for Zacchaeus he changed selfishness into love. For the widow of Naim he changed tears into joy. For the thief on Calvary he changed despair into hope. On Easter morning he changed death into life. The presence of Jesus in the lives of the married guarantees them that they will never run out of wine the wine of his love and grace. The wine of patience, love, sacrifice will retain its power to give and to forgive under all circumstances of life. Having a loving devotion toward the Blessed Mother will merit for couples her intercession with Jesus her Son. And so, married couples will recognize and adopt the model and life style of the Holy Family to serve, and not to be served. By his presence at Cana, Christ showed His belief in the sanctity of marriage. What would His reaction be to the present day practice of couples living together before their wedding? Most of us can look back at the way our own Mom and Dad lived out their marriage vows lots of love and mutual trust; lots of caring and sharing! Blessed be God! Fr. Len Wesele w Kanie I znowu zaczął się Okres Zwykły w ciągu roku. Przez kolejne niedziele będziemy słuchać Ewangelii według św. Łukasza. Aż do rozpoczęcia Wielkiego Postu, a później po Zesłaniu Ducha Świętego, aż do następnego Adwentu. Ewangelia według św. Łukasza wskazuje na to, że mamy teraz rok C. Jednak w tą niedzielę Kościół czyni wyjątek i słuchamy fragmentu Ewangelii św. Jana. Wesele w Kanie Galilejskiej. I jedno i drugie mówią o małżeństwie. Placyd

Shrine Church of ST. STANISLAUS PROJECT RACHEL What is Project Rachel? A post abortion ministry for women and men suffering from the trauma of abortion who are offered a context of faith and ritualization of God s loving mercy and call to forgiveness. In the Catholic context, priests who are specially trained journey with the person through the healing process by way of an innovative development of the Sacrament of Reconciliation, linking together psychological counseling, reconciliation, and pastoral support in the process. Project Rachel is the Church s way of saying to people suffering from the aftermath of an abortion, Welcome Home! What is Project Rachel s foundation? Jeremiah 31: 15-17 Thus says the Lord: In Ramah is heard the sound of moaning, of bitter weeping! Rachel mourns her children, she refuses to be consoled because her children are no more. Thus says the Lord: Cease your cries of mourning, wipe the tears from your eyes. The sorrow you have shown shall have its reward, says the Lord, they shall return from the enemy s land. There is hope for your future, says the Lord; Your children shall return to their own borders. Faith in the Lord s forgiveness and hope in the future. Offering them hope rooted in God s forgiveness is the first step to healing. The important spiritual component is the walk to the forgiveness of God. Post abortion guilt is totally unrelated to religious belief. Agnostics and the unchurched have no less guilt about their abortions than their churched peers. Further, grief and anger are equally crucial components of post abortion trauma. Overwhelming research evidence calls for similar ministry in every faith tradition. Post abortion syndrome is not a uniquely Catholic problem. Working relationships can be established with individual clergy and counselors in other religions. Each faith tradition offers a method for ritualizing forgiveness. Professional counseling linked to spiritual reconciliation knows no denominational boundaries, but the counseling must respect and understand the faith of the client in order to speed healing. Within the Cleveland Diocese, there are priests and lay ecclesial ministers trained and willing to serve in Project Rachel counseling for post-abortive men and women. The Diocese also has a professional clinical counselors list for those who need their expertise. Call 216-334-2966 and ask for Peggy. www.hopeafterabortion.com It is normal to grieve after an abortion. This site provides information and resources to help those who are hurting psychologically. Also, locate any Project Rachel program in the United States. www.noparh.org There is a wide variety of symptoms of abortion's aftermath, ranging from mild grief to profound reactions which may include Post- Traumatic Stress Disorder. This Office provides a national "800" referral line for those seeking assistance in reconciling an abortion experience. Plany dla szafarzy Eucharystii Uwaga! Uwaga! Placyda. Czas zostanie podany później. HOSPITALITY COMMITTEE NEWS The committee s next meeting is scheduled for the evening of Wednesday, January 20, 2010 at 7 PM in the school all-purpose room. DID YOU KNOW that parishioners pray the rosary together twice a week in church for the protection of life? Tuesdays and Fridays, after 8:30 AM Mass. RECLAIMING FATHERHOOD There is an excellent website specifically for men who are dealing with their role in abortion and then come to see a need for understanding, healing and reconciliation. (http://www. menandabortion.info/index.html) Vincent Rue, Ph.D., pioneer researcher in the field of men and abortion, wrote in an article, The Effects of Abortion on Men, that "men do grieve following abortion, but they are more likely to deny their grief or internalize their feelings of loss rather than openly express them... When men do express their grief, they try to do so in culturally prescribed masculine ways, i.e. anger, aggressiveness, control. Men typically grieve in a private way following an abortion. Because of this, men's requests for help may often go unrecognized and unheeded by those around them." A Special Word from Venerable John Paul II I would now like to say a special word to women who have had an abortion. The church is aware of the many factors which may have influenced your decision. And she does not doubt that in many cases it was a painful and even shattering decision. The wound in your heart may not yet have healed. Certainly what happened was and remains terribly wrong. But do not give in to discouragement and do not lose hope. Try rather to understand what happened and face it honestly. If you have not already done so, give yourselves over with humility and trust to repentance. The Father of Mercies is ready to give you his forgiveness and his peace in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. You will come to understand that nothing is definitively lost and you will be able to ask forgiveness from your child, who is now living in the Lord Pope John Paul II, The Gospel of Life
