March 25 The Solemnity of the Annunciation The Solemnity of the Annunciation celebrates the coming of the Angel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary to announce to her the special mission God had chosen for her in being the mother of His only son. We are continually reminded of the importance of this feast to our salvation in various devotional prayers. Two examples that highlight the importance of this feast are the joyous mysteries of the Rosary and the Angelus. The feast of the Annunciation began to be celebrated on this day during the fourth and fifth centuries, soon after the date for celebrating Christmas was universalized throughout the Church. This feast celebrates the Incarnation of the Second Person of the Trinity and the salvation of all mankind. This point of our salvation was deeply discussed by many of the Church fathers, to explain it to the faithful and to show the deep love God has for us. Page Nine 3rd Sunday of Lent March 23, 2014 25 marca Święto Zwiastowania Dzień Świętości Życia To wielkie święto kościelne, upamiętniające Zwiastowanie Bogurodzicy ustanowione zostało przez Jana Pawła II i jest obchodzone 25 marca. W uroczystość Zwiastowania Pańskiego, Kościół przeżywa Dzień Świętości Życia. W tym dniu w sposób szczególny spoglądamy nie tylko na swoje życie, które jest wielkim darem Stwórcy. Nadarza się też dobra okazja, by zatroszczyć się o życie tych najbardziej bezbronnych, poczętych, ale jeszcze nienarodzonych, którym grozi zagłada. I życzę i modlę się o to stale ażeby rodzina polska dawała życie, żeby była wierna świętemu prawu życia. Bronić życia i umacniać je, czcić je i kochać oto zadanie, które Bóg powierza każdemu człowiekowi. Jan Paweł II Zgodnie z Encyklika Jana Pawla II EVANGELIUM VITAE Przerywanie ciąży i eutanazja są zatem zbrodniami, których żadna ludzka ustawa nie może uznać za dopuszczalne. Ustawy, które to czynią, nie tylko nie są w żaden sposób wiążące dla sumienia, ale stawiają wręcz człowieka wobec poważnej i konkretnej powinności przeciwstawienia się im poprzez sprzeciw sumienia. Od samych początków Kościoła przepowiadanie apostolskie pouczało chrześcijan o obowiązku posłuszeństwa władzom publicznym prawomocnie ustanowionym (por. Rz 13, 1 7; 1 P 2, 13 14), ale zarazem przestrzegało stanowczo, że trzeba bardziej słuchać Boga niż ludzi (Dz 5, 29). Już w Starym Testamencie znajdujemy wymowny przykład oporu wobec niesprawiedliwego rozporządzenia władz i to właśnie takiego, które było wymierzone przeciw życiu. Żydowskie położne sprzeciwiły się faraonowi, który nakazał zabijać wszystkie nowo narodzone dzieci płci męskiej: nie wykonały rozkazu króla egipskiego, pozostawiając przy życiu chłopców (Wj 1, 17). Trzeba jednak zwrócić uwagę na głęboki motyw takiej postawy: położne bały się Boga. Właśnie z posłuszeństwa Bogu, któremu należy się bojaźń, wyrażająca uznanie Jego absolutnej i najwyższej władzy człowiek czerpie moc i odwagę, aby przeciwstawiać się niesprawiedliwym ludzkim prawom. Jest to moc i odwaga tego, kto gotów jest nawet iść do więzienia lub zginąć od miecza, gdyż jest przekonany, że tu się okazuje wytrwałość i wiara świętych (Ap 13, 10). Tak więc w przypadku prawa wewnętrznie niesprawiedliwego, jakim jest prawo dopuszczające przerywanie ciąży i eutanazję, nie wolno się nigdy do niego stosować ani uczestniczyć w kształtowaniu opinii publicznej przychylnej takiemu prawu, ani też okazywać mu poparcia w głosowaniu Rozkład Rekolekcji Wielkopostnych 2014 Parafia św. Parafia Tomsk, w której od ponad 16 lat posługuje jest dosyć rozległa, to terytorium większe od Polski. W ostatnich latach w pracy duszpasterskiej w tomskiej parafii ks. Andrzejowi pomaga ks. Marek Jaśkowski, również kapłan z Polski. March 23, 2014 3rd Sunday of Lent Page Thirteen ON SWIMMIMNG, VAN MORRISON, AND OH, THE WATER Copyright 2014 by John B. Reynolds (john@jrwrites.com) Early last year, my employer officially moved its operations from Skokie, IL to Elk Grove Village, IL. OK, but I had been a member of the Leaning Tower YMCA on Touhy in Niles for decades (I joined for the pool) and suddenly it was no longer on the way to and from work. Looking for an alternative, I considered the fitness center in Elk Grove Village but nixed the idea early on when I learned that they were closing the pool for a major renovation that would take months to complete. I didn t want to wait months. I wanted to swim. So I ended up at the LA Fitness facility on Cumberland in Chicago and got back to laps two times per week. Just recently, a friend told me that the Elk Grove Village facility pool had finally opened, and he was going to check it out. He showed me a brochure about the place and it looked great, but I m well into my routine at the LA by now, so I told Jeff I wouldn t be joining him. Nonetheless, we talked about our fitness plans and strokes of choice. We both acknowledged that swimming is a great heart workout, but then we shared as we often do a thought neither of us could precisely capture in words but that in this case went beyond the health benefits of doing laps back and forth. Yeah. That s when Jeff confirmed my very thought: there s something wonderful about being in the water. Oh, the water. Oh, the water. Oh, the water. Let it run all over me. If you are a Van Morrison fan, you recognize the old song lyrics. Van Morrison tells a story of getting wet in the rain while on a fishing outing with a friend. Later the sun shines and they catch a ride up the road to a swimming hole, where they get wet all over again. And later still, when they are thirsty and headed home, a man with the sunshine in his eyes offers them water. I don t know what the Van Man was intending to say, but I know that every time I hear this song, I think about the eternal waters that Jesus offers the Samaritan woman at Jacob s well in today s Gospel. The passage from the Evangelist John one of my favorites in all of Scripture is a fascinating dialogue filled with double meaning between Jesus and the woman, both alone at the well after Christ s disciples had gone to the local town to buy food. Jesus asks her for a drink. She essentially scoffs at the request. Jesus replies that if she knew who was asking, she would have asked him in return for living water. She scoffs again: Sir, you do not even have a bucket and the cistern is deep; where then can you get this living water? Jesus responds, Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again; but whoever drinks the water I shall give will never thirst; the water I shall give will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life, and over the course of the long conversation, the woman comes to believe first that Jesus is a prophet, and then that he is the Christ. Jeff was right it s not so much about the swimming but about the water itself and Van Morrison absolutely nailed it: Oh, the water. Oh, the water. Oh, the water. Let it run all over me.
