The association of Hypno-Polypodietum Jurko et Peciar 1963 was found in the easternmost outskirts of the Polish Sudetes Mts. The phytocoenoses of Hypnum cupressiforme and Polypodium vulgare occurred at several localities at altitudes of 340 up to 370 m a.s.l. on steep and rocky overhangs and ledges of inclinations between 55 o and 85 o. All patches of this association were noted in the villages of Jarno³tówek and Pokrzywna, in most cases within the Karliki and Karolinki rocks. The phytocoenoses developed in shaded, woody places on the natural slate outcrops. They were mainly composed of two character plants Polypodium vulgare and Hypnum cupressiforme. The analysis of species composition revealed that the structure of vegetation patches was similar to those noted in other regions of Poland as well as in Slovakia and the Czech Republic. KEY WORDS: rock vegetation, Hypno-Polypodietum, the Sudetes Mts., Opole Silesia, plant association Introduction The Hypno-Polypodietum association ranks amongst the rarest syntaxa in Poland (Berdowski, Kwiatkowski 1996; Szczêœniak 1998a; Œwierkosz 2004). It is also protected by European legislation (Habitat Directive 1992). Until now, it has been reported from the Central and Western Sudetes Mts., e.g. the Ostrzyca Proboszczowicka nature reserve at the Kaczawskie Foothills (Anio³- Kwiatkowska, Œwierkosz 1992), Chojnik Mt., which is an exclave of the Karkonosze National Park (Œwierkosz 1994), the Góra Zamkowa nature reserve near Wleñ (Kwiatkowski 1994), the W¹wóz Siedmicki nature reserve at the Kaczawskie Foothills (Berdowski, Kwiatkowski 1996), the Krzy owa Góra near Strzegom nature reserve (the Sudeten Foreland) in Lower Silesia (Szczêœniak 1998a), the Wa³brzyskie Foothills (Szczêœniak 1998b), the Góra Radunia nature reserve (Berdowski, Panek 1999), the Karkonosze Mts. (Kwiatkowski 2007) as well as from the Silesian Beskid in the Polish Western Carpathians (Wilczek 2006). The association was also recorded in Slovakia and the Czech Republic (Jurko, Peciar 1963; Jenik et al. 1975; Sýkora 1981; Valachoviè 1995). The phytocoenosis of Hypno-Polypodietum develops on neutral or acidic rocks such as slates, gneiss, granite or basalts in shady places mainly within the mountain forest belt zones. The patches of Hypno-Polypodietum were found mainly on natural rock outcrops in stream valleys. At a few localities, they have also occupied large boulders. 1. Methods The geobotanical researches were conducted in 2008 on natural and manmade rock outcrops in the Opawskie Mts. in the southern part of the Opole Silesia Province (Fig. 1). The mountain range runs parallel to the Polish and Czech border and comprises an area of c. 130 km 2. The highest peak is Kopa Biskupia Mt. (890 m a.s.l.), occupying a central position in this ridge. The Opawskie Mts. are the easternmost part of the Sudetes Mts.; since 1988 they have been under protection as a landscape park.

Obszar wystêpowania Hypno-Polypodietum Jurko et Peciar 1963 na Œl¹sku Opolskim (SW Polska) The Opawskie Mts. have quite a sophisticated geological history and thus there are plenty of rock types represented. One of the commonest type is phyllitic slate with characteristic stratification and lamination. Quite often some intrusions of quartzite are present. On such basement, the association of Hypno- Polypodietum finds favourable conditions to thrive. The phytosociological relevés were done using the Braun-Blanquet (1964) approach. Altogether thirteen relevés were collected, which are presented in Table 1. The syntaxonomical classification follows Valachoviè (1995). Other

200 Arkadiusz-Nowak,-Sylwia-Nowak,-Adam-Stebel 200 papers were also taken into consideration (Oberdorfer 1994; Pott 1995; Berdowski, Panek 1999; Matuszkiewicz 2001; Œwierkosz et al. 2004; Wilczek 2006). The location with respect to the nearest village and the ATPOL grid square 10x10 km according to Zaj¹c (1978) are presented within the register of the stands. The nomenclature follows Mirek et al. (2002) for vascular plants, Ochyra et al. (2003) for mosses and Grolle and Lang (2000) for liverworts. 2. Results The phytosociological analyses allowed us to identify the association of Polypodium vulgare and Hypnum cupressiforme. The systematic position of that plant community was presented by Valachoviè (1995) as follows: Class: Asplenietea trichomanis (Br.-Bl. in Meier et Br.-Bl. 1934) Oberd. 1977 Order: Androsacetalia vandellii Br.-Bl. in Meier et Br.-Bl. 1934 corr. Br.- Bl. 1948 Alliance: Hypno-Polypodion vulgaris Mucina 1993 Association: Hypno-Polypodietum Jurko et Peciar 1963 The moss-fern association of Hypno-Polypodietum was found on rock outcrops in the Opawskie Mts. Patches of this rare plant community, not recorded previously from Opole Silesia, developed in shady spots on Devonian-aged phyllitic slates in montane belt forests. The phytocoenoses were found at several sites of elevations of 340 up to 370 m a.s.l. on steep slopes, walls and rock ledges, mainly within the Karliki and Karolinki rocks in Bukowa Góra and on Olszak Hill. The association preferred the mesotrophic forest complexes, the acidophilous mountain beech forest Luzulo luzuloidis-fagetum (Du Rietz 1923) Markgr. 1932 em. Meusel 1937, the acidophilous oak forest Luzulo luzuloidis-quercetum Hilitzer 1932 and the maple-linden community Aceri-Tilietum Faber 1936. The phytocoenoses comprise mainly Polypodium vulgare and Hypnum cupressiforme, which co-occur with other species, e.g. with bryophytes Dicranum scoparium, Cynodontium polycarpon, Plagiothecium nemorale, Barbilophozia barbata, Hedwigia ciliata, and Mnium hornum. Forest species such as Calamagrostis arundinacea, Luzula luzuloides, Deschampsia flexuosa, Geranium robertianum and Prenanthes purpuraea also reach a considerable cover rate. The high constancy level has Vaccinium myrtillus (IV). This high frequency and abundance of forest species in analysed patches is related to location of the rock in the close proximity of forests. The surrounding forests act as a refugee for many forest taxa, which have potential to expand into and settle in rocky habitats. The species richness in the sampled patches was between 8 and 13 taxa, the

201 The-association-of-Hypno-Polypodietum-in-the-Opawskie-Mts. 201 majority of them being bryophytes. The average vascular plant cover was ci. 50% and for bryophytes c. 56%. Among taxa noted, two are legally protected according to the Minister of Environment Plant Species Ordinance (Regulation of the Environment Ministry of Poland, 2004): Polypodium vulgare strict protection and Dicranum scoparium partial protection. 3. Discussion To date, there is no clear and uncontroversial systematic classification of the Hypno-Polypodietum association. Jurko and Peciar (1963) proposed the new class Polypodietea and the order Polypodietalia to properly classify the syntaxonomical differentiation in rocky vegetation. That view was rather casual; it did not become introduced to a wider audience and into phytosociological research (Moravec 1983). However, Kolbek (1978) mentioned the class Polypodietea, and Sýkora (1981) thought that the order Polypodietalia should be accepted as valid. According to the classification by Valachoviè (1995), the alliance of Hypno-Polypodion was included in the order Androsacetalia vandelii on account of floristic relationships; this conservative approach is adopted here. In patches of vegetation studied by us, the diagnostic species combination was found, i.e. both taxa typical of the association Hypno-Polypodietum (Polypodium vulgare and Hypnum cupressiforme) as well as differential species of the association and the alliance Hypno-Polypodion (Vaccinium myrtillus, Calamagrostis arundinacea, Luzula luzuloides, Dicranum scoparium, Deschampsia flexuosa, Sorbus aucuparia, Dryopteris filix-mas, Oxalis acetosella and Dryopteris carthusiana). In addition, plants characteristic of the order Androsacetalia vandellii and the class Asplenietea trichomanis were noted, i.e. Asplenium septentrionale and Sedum maximum. Similarly to phytocoenoses documented from Slovakia (Jurko, Peciar 1963), the incidence of lichens like Cladonia sp. was insignificant. A comparison of the floristic structure of patches found in the Opawskie Mts. and those reported from elsewhere in Central Europe reveals many features in common for both vascular plants and mosses. In almost all cases, Polypodium vulgare and Hypnum cupressiforme are dominant species. The co-dominants or species with a relatively high cover rate or frequency are: Dicranum scoparium, Luzula luzuloides, Calamagrostis arundinacaea, and Deschampsia flexuosa. Rarely, Plagiothecium nemorale and Barbilophozia barbata also were considerably abundant and constant.

202 Arkadiusz-Nowak,-Sylwia-Nowak,-Adam-Stebel 202 Studied vegetation plots differ in comparison to other phytocoenoses of Hypno-Polypodietum in the Sudetes Mts., because of Pohlia nutans absence although it is considered to be diagnostic species of the association or alliance (e.g. Anio³-Kwiatkowska, Œwierkosz 1992; Kwiatkowski 1994; Berdowski, Panek 1999). Also remarkable is the absence of Cystopteris fragilis, a species often noted in the Hypno-Polypodietum community (Anio³-Kwiatkowska, Œwierkosz 1992; Kwiatkowski 1994). However, this taxon occurs preferably in more humid and fertile biotopes, mostly in broad-leaved beech or oak forests. The stands with the Hypno-Polypodietum association in the Opawskie Mts. complement the geographical range of that vegetation type in Poland and fill the gap between known localities in the Central Sudetes Mts. and the Carpathians. They have the typical floristic structure and occupy similar habitats, mainly on natural outcrops of neutral or acid rocks. Because of the stable synanthropodynamic situation and low anthropogenic pressure within the newly discovered sites, there is no significant danger for the Hypno-Polypodietum in the Opawskie Mts. It does not appear to be threatened but, considering the rarity and very scarce occurrence of the community, it has been classified in the least concerned category (LC) on the red list of plant communities of the Opole Province (Nowak, Nowak 2008). A sporadic evidence of negative human impact refers rather to not natural places in quarries and walls constructed by man. It is worth underlining that the phytocoenosis of Hypno- Polypodietum has a significant conservation value, being amongst the rarest and the most peculiar of vegetation types in the region. Polypodium vulgare i Hypnum cupressiforme. Analiza sk³adu gatunkowego pokaza³a, e badane p³aty s¹ podobne do stwierdzanych w innych czêœciach Polski, na S³owacji i w Czechach, co obrazuje m.in. wyraÿna dominacja Polypodium vulgare oraz Hypnum cupressiforme. W nielicznych przypadkach wspó³dominantami lub gatunkami osi¹gaj¹cymi stosunkowo du e pokrycie i sta³oœæ s¹ Dicranum scoparium, Luzula luzuloides, Calamagrostis arundinacaea i Deschampsia flexuosa. P³aty zespo³u nie s¹ szczególnie zagro one, znajduj¹ siê na terenie projektowanych pomników przyrody w granicach Parku Krajobrazowego Góry Opawskie.
