FERDINAND SCHOOL AND NOTRE DAME HIGH SCHOOL FOR GIRLS The Opening All Schools Mass for St. Ferdinand School and Notre Dame High School for Girls at St. Ferdinand Parish was a truly faithful and vibrant occasion. The students, faculty, and staff were involved in the Mass. Father Brian led the entire school in a riveting closing song. Father Torba, Father Brian, Father Michael, and Father Marcin then led the school in a procession from the church to the classrooms, where each room received a special blessing. What a great way to start the year!

There are more than 600 Christian families living in Bethlehem and are completely dependent on carving olive wood figurines for their livelihood. The recent clashes in the Middle East have stopped the tourism industry in Bethlehem, causing most of those families serious harm in earning their living and forcing many of them to leave their homeland. Emptying the land of Christ from Christians can have tragic consequences on the Holy sites. Issam from Star of Bethlehem Group came to the United States with a mission to help those families by selling their beautiful religious hand crafts. The cost of goods goes to benefit the Christian carvers to keep them working in the spirit of our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, the profit from sales goes directly to the needy Catholic schools and clinics in the Holy Land. September 7, 2014 23rd Ordinary Sunday Page Eight INVITATION TO JOIN THE MEMORIAL BRICK PROJECT AROUND THE STATUE OF THE BLESSED MOTHER The place on our property around the statue of the Blessed Mother is special because it commemorates our parishioners who have died during war. On Memorial Day each year, by the statue, we pray and we remember our hero parishioners who fought in many different corners of the world for peace and freedom, and have sacrificed their lives for God and country. During the months dediated to Blessed Mother, May and October, on each Saturday we pray together by at that statue, to praise Mary, Mother of God and ask for her care and through her intercession for our community and our families. Everyday, many people stop by the statue to reflect and pray. At the suggestion and initiative of the Polish Rosary Groups we would like to restore, clean up and fix up this site, lay brick stones, put up benches, plant flowers and trees around this very special place. This project will give us and our entire St. Ferdinand community a great opportunity to honor or memorialize a loved one. If you would like to leave a lasting remembrance, we invite you to participate in this project! It will be a special place to remember anyone and make a path for those who come after you and forever to stay in the hearts of St. Ferdinand families. For one thing, we re in the action phase of our Parish Transformation initiative. I ve written about this before PT is an element of the Archdiocese of Chicago s larger strategic pastoral plan, Reflect Christ s Light, which is meant to help parishes not only ensure financial stability, but also renew their sense of mission and after months and months of weekly discernment meetings, we are now actually effecting the plan. For two things, we are also planning our yearly fall fund raiser, the annual Parish Dinner Dance. This year it s scheduled for October 11, so we re neck deep right now in publicity, ticket sales (both general admission and raffle), and the hundreds of details that go along with something like this. For three things, we just had our off site Parish Picnic this past weekend. Lots of details there, too, of course, and from my perspective, each one was covered in fine fashion. Elemental to the planning of all three events each year is the notion of community. While we are one big faith family, we are also comprised of many smaller faith families, with these based primarily on cultural lines. Per our parish mission statement, St. Constance is a prayerful, caring, and welcoming Roman Catholic community. Originally founded in 1916 as an outreach church for Polish immigrants, it is now culturally diverse We are heavily Polish and Anglo, but we re also Hispanic and Philippine and Italian and you name it, and sometimes having such a diverse place Liturgical Bro. Most times, though, we embrace this cultural diversity as the blessing that it truly is. I ve been involved with each of these initiatives, and though we have a (community building) ways to go, we have come quite a (community building) way already. Which is good, because in a sense, community building is what today s readings are all about. We get specifics in the Old Testament ( if you warn the wicked, trying to turn him from his way, and he refuses to turn from his way, he shall die for his guilt, but you shall save yourself ) but it all boils down to each of us being responsible for proclaiming God s word to one another. Similarly per the Apostle Paul, love is the fulfillment of the law, and isn t love in this context the essence of community? And per Jesus himself in the Gospel, where two or three are gathered together in my name, there I am in the midst of them. Perhaps I m reading too much into this, but as I see it, together and only together can we build up community, and surely when we build up community, we build up the Kingdom as well. One of my jobs at the picnic last week was to help sell raffle tickets. A friend taught me how to say good luck in Polish, so with each sale to a Polishspeaking buyer, I wished him or her Powodzenia! It takes good luck to win a raffle. It takes hard work to build community. St. Constance is a busy place these days. But building community, we all have plenty of work ahead of us. Let s get to it.
