April 6, 2014 5th Sunday of Lent Page Four PREPARING AND CELEBRATING RECONCILIATION Lent is a wonderful time to celebrate the reconciling love and the healing graces our Lord offers us. Like all religious experience, it takes preparation. Preparing Reconciliation is what God does. We prepare for it by opening ourselves up, by reflecting upon the areas of darkness in our lives into which God so deeply desires to shine a light. I can look at each of my responsibilities as a citizen of a city and a country and the world, a neighbor, an employee, a member of a parish or congregation, as a parent or a spouse or as a son or daughter. God will always shine light into these important parts of our lives, to help us experience remorse and a genuine desire for forgiveness and healing. I It may be that when I ask myself the question about where God might be offering me forgiveness and healing, I might first come up with a single thing that seems "big" to me. I might say, "I feel sorry for how I treat my spouse or my children." I may discover that the real pattern of sin has to do with a deeper dishonesty or lack of integrity: hiding from God; leading a double life; not being who I really am called to be; trying to manage my life on my own terms; manipulating others for my own needs and desires. When the Light of God's love shines into this level of self awareness, then I am touched by a powerful experience of reconciliation. Celebrating Reconciliation Reconciliation is what God does. Receiving it and celebrating it is what we do. For those of us who are Catholics, the Sacrament of Reconciliation is a most natural way to celebrate God's reconciliation. We used to think of this sacrament as only about "confession" that it was like a dumping ground for my sins, where I got forgiven, and I had to "pay a toll." One of the great recoveries in our Christian history is to re discover the meaning of this sacrament. It is God who forgives sins. And God forgives us the very moment that we come to the experience that we need forgiveness (which itself comes through God's grace). At that moment, I feel sorrow and a desire for forgiveness and healing. In that moment, I am reconciled with God. The reunion, the bond, the connection, the joy are all there. Three more things remain: to receive it deep within my heart, to celebrate it, and to participate in the healing process. When I experience God's forgiveness and love, I am invited to savor it and let it touch me deeply. Experiencing compassion, patience, understanding, and forgiveness is itself transforming. If I fail to appreciate what I have just received freely and undeserved then I will take it for granted and risk moving on without a real healing happening. An integral part of the reconciliation involves the healing process. If I sprain my ankle, the doctor will offer me a number of therapies for healing ice, for the first 24 hours to reduce the swelling, wrapping it, elevating it, and then gradually and carefully using it, until it is healed and strong again. Part of the Sacrament of Reconciliation is to seek and practice a "remedy" or "medicine" for the healing I desire. Often that will simply be prayer. Often, expressing my gratitude to God is one of the most important steps on the road to recovery from my independence from God. Sometimes, I will need to practice a therapy that is more carefully planned making choices about what I can practice doing and what I can practice avoiding. May our Lord grant us all the gift of reconciliation, and may we all receive it and celebrate it well in the holy days ahead. www.onlineministries.creighton.edu

The Knights of Columbus of Mater Christi Council would like to take part of that pilgrimage with you as we travel to seven churches in the Archdiocese of Chicago, on Holy Thursday, April 17 th, stopping at each to visit the Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and offer prayers for each other and our families. Our first stop will be at the home of Cardinal Francis George where we will have an outdoor candlelight prayer service offering prayers as he undergoes his treatment for cancer. We will then visit; Our Lady of Mt Carmel, St. Thomas of Canterbury, St. Mary of the Lake, St. Gregory the Great, Our Lady of Lourdes, St. Jerome and St. Ignatius Church. At each church we encourage everyone to join us in front of the church as we pray for 1. Our children (1 st decade of the rosary of the Sorrowful Mother) 2. Those that are lonely, depressed or may be considering abortion (2 nd decade of the rosary of the Sorrowful Mother) 3. FERDINAND PARISH We invite you to join us in this simple expression of our love for Christ and His love for us in the morning of Good Friday, April 18, 2014 Unfortunately, due to his chemotherapy schedule, Cardinal George will be unable to attend this year's Way of the Cross. Each year we follow the passion of Christ in the heart of our city, where thousands of people carry their cross every day. Through choral music, Gospel passages, reflections, and our silent procession, we hope to enter more deeply into the events of Good Friday and their meaning for us today. We ask to experience the exceptional Presence of Christ among us as a real answer to the needs of our hearts. As we process through downtown Chicago on Good Friday, we join with the entire Church, the Church throughout the world and the Church throughout the ages, in remembering what Christ's suffering and death mean not remembering what it meant but remembering what it means for us here and now and means for all people in every place and time. Route Walking in silence through the heart of Chicago, from the Daley Center Plaza to Holy Name Cathedral. Schedule We gather at Daley Plaza at 8:45 AM, and begin promptly at 9:00 AM with an introduction. The scheduled arrival at Holy Name Cathedral is around 11:30am, and the last station is expected to conclude around noon. Tematem filmu jest walka duchowa, a konkretnie walka z Szatanem. Autor filmu, Michał Kondrat przeprowadza widza skrupulatnie przez ten problem, tłumacząc jego kontrowersyjne aspekty i udzielając wskazówek opartych na doświadczeniach ojców Kościoła. Z rozmów z nimi można się dowiedzieć, jakie narzędzia Kościół oferuje do walki ze złym duchem. Eksperci podają bardzo konkretne przykłady: jak prawidłowo sprawować modlitwę o uwolnienie, jak dzięki modlitwom wstawienniczym pokonać kryzys w małżeństwie. W Polsce premiera filmu odbyła się 31 października 2013 roku. Dzień 31 października jest rocznicą śmierci jednego z bohaterów filmu: Matteo Da Agnone, wielkiego włoskiego egzorcysty, żyjącego na przełomie XVI i XVII wieku, którego można nazwać wręcz pogromcą demonów. Film Jak pokonać Szatana pokazuje istnienie złego ducha, ale nie skupia się na nim i nie epatuje złem. Akcent w filmie pada na miłosierdzie Pana Boga, bo to ono uwalnia i to zdanie kilkakrotnie, niczym motto, pada z ust bohaterów filmu. Film jest narzędziem ewangelizacyjnym, ponieważ zachęca do prowadzenia życia duchowego i pokazuje potrzebę regularnej modlitwy, oraz przyjmowania sakramentów. Wywiad dla Tygodnika Niedziela Wszystko jest możliwe dla tego, kto wierzy, a ten, który w Bogu składa marzenia, zostanie zadziwiony ich realizacją i spełnieniem. 35 letni Michał Kondrat opowiada o tym, jak Bóg uczynił z jego życia służbę Miłości. Jesteś twórcą filmu: Jak pokonać szatana. Jaki jest jego zamysł? Temat ten nosiłem w sobie dwa lata. Wiele osób, którym mówiłem o Bogu, sugerowało, że gdyby widzieli to, co ja też by uwierzyli. Stąd pomysł, by podzielić się z nimi obrazem. Miałem pragnienie w sercu, a Pan Bóg odpowiedział na nie, dając mi ludzi, którzy pomogli to zrealizować. Co ma wnosić ten film? Zachęcać ludzi do modlitwy. Często spotykam się z opiniami, że tylko egzorcysta może się modlić, nawet księża odmawiają pomocy. Bóg jest źródłem wszelkiego dobra i może przez nas działać, kiedy uznamy w sercu, że sami nic nie znaczymy i poprosimy Go, by się nami posługiwał. Gdy jednak narzucam Bogu, jak będę się modlić, staję się jak mówi o. Amorth (watykański egzorcysta) pośmiewiskiem dla diabła. Mówi on też, że służyć może tylko człowiek żyjący w łasce uświęcającej i przesiąknięty modlitwą, nie wystarczy poranny i wieczorny pacierz. Kto jest adresatem filmu? Każdy z nas. Wszyscy jesteśmy narażeni na działanie złego ducha. Warto wiedzieć, jak można się bronić. Chciałbym dotrzeć z nim też do osób niewierzących, dlatego starałem się, by był ciekawy w odbiorze. Zrobiłeś film o spotkaniu z walczącymi na pierwszym froncie z szatanem, na tym froncie służyłeś i Ty. Jak to się zaczęło? Od tego, że szukałem wolności nie tam, gdzie trzeba, a Bóg sprawił, że spotkałem mądrego duchownego, który okazał się być egzorcystą warszawskim. Ks. Jan Szymborski wyjaśniał mi sprawy dotyczące wiary i odpowiadał na nurtujące pytania, aż stał się moim kierownikiem duchowym. Po roku zaproponował mi posługę towarzyszenia przy egzorcyzmach, a potem uczynił liderem grupy asystującej przy trudnych przypadkach. Jesteś osobą publiczną, radnym jednej z dzielnic Warszawy, miałeś też epizody z tzw. wielką polityką... Jak postrzegana jest Twoja służba publiczna w połączeniu ze służbą Kościołowi? To właśnie moja służba Kościołowi. Jesteśmy na wojnie, a każdy z nas jest na innym polu bitwy. Teren, na którym mam działać dla Kościoła, odnajduję w życiu publicznym, również w polityce. Cieszę się, papież Franciszek wezwał chrześcijan do mieszania się w sprawy polityki (16 września 2013 r.), zaznaczając, że naszym obowiązkiem jest branie odpowiedzialności za sprawy społeczne. April 6, 2014 5th Sunday of Lent Page Eleven POMOC DLA MALUTKIEJ MAI Kochani! 28 kwietnia 2011 roku, Maja Mróz z Tarnowa urodziła sie jako zdrowa i pełna wigoru dziewczynka. Kiedy miala 16 miesiecy, rodzicie Mai zauwazyli że jej lewe oko lekko ucieka. Zaniepokojeni tym udali sie do specjalisty który po badaniu oka natychmiast skierował Maję na dodatkowe badania okulistyczne w dziecięcym szpitalu w Krakowie. Diagnoza była szokujaca. U Mai rozpoznano chorobe nowotworową zwaną Retinoblastoma. Siatkowczak, to potoczna nazwa tego nowotworu jest bardzo rzadkim, złośliwym nowotworem rozwijającym się z pierwotnych komórek siatkówki. Patrycja Zareba zajęła 3 miejsce w konkursie: " Jan Paweł II Prawdziwy Misjonarz to Święty" organizowanym przez Biuro Edukacji Misyjnej i Nowej Ewangelizacji. Nagrodę z rąk Ks. Biskupa Andrzeja Wypycha przyjęła w niedzielę, 30 marca. Maja nie widzi na lewe oko. Do chwili obecnej przeszła kilkanaście chemioterapii typu: chemioterapia dożylna, zamrażanie oka tak zwana krioterapia i radioterapia. Ostatnie badania przeprowadzone 19 marca tego roku w szpitalu Moorfields Eye Hospital w Londynie, pod okiem Dr. John Hungerford, wykryło 3 ogniska rakowe, z których jedno nadal jest aktywne. Kolejne badanie za 4 tygodnie. Te liczne, bo prawie comiesięczne badania zarówno w Krakowie jak i w Londynie to w rezultacie bardzo wysokie koszty, które na te chwilę przewyższaja już możliwości finansowe rodzicow Mai. Dlatego tez zwracamy się z goracą prośbą do Was o wsparcie finansowe dla ratownia zdrowia i życia naszej Mai. Każda kwota jest pomocna. Również przekazanie tej wiadomości do waszych bliskich, rodziny, znajomych podtrzyma w nas nadzieję na zebranie niezbeędnych środków finansowych na Mai leczenie. April 6, 2014 5th Sunday of Lent Page Thirteen ON RECONCILIATION, AND BEING UNBOUND Copyright 2014 by John B. Reynolds (john@jrwrites.com) This may or may not be an accurate statement for many Catholics, but I suspect it is for some: going to Confession is hard. And I don t mean hard as in the availability of time. At my parish, the Reconciliation schedule (every Saturday from 3:15 to 4:15 PM) is posted in the weekly bulletin with additional opportunities each Lent and Advent season. No, I mean hard as in it can be difficult to fess up to one s own shortcomings and to speak them. Out loud. I think I m a decent guy. I go to church on Sunday. I ve never shot anybody. I ve never robbed anyone. And yet if I m honest with myself, I know I ve often failed the spirit of the Commandments, and I can t be alone in this. Still, confessions are down, at least anecdotally. Per a writer on a Catholic website I came upon, A generation ago, you'd see a lot of us lined up inside Catholic churches on Saturday afternoons, waiting to take our turn in one of the confessionals.yet in most parishes, the lines for the confessionals have pretty much disappeared. Confession has become the one sacrament casual Catholics feel free to skip. We'll get married in church, we'll be buried from church, and we'll take Communion at Mass. But regularly confessing one's sins to God and the parish priest seems to be a part of fewer and fewer Catholic lives. Where have all the sinners gone? We haven t gone into hiding. We re all over the place. But some of us need a reminder to get back to one of the basics and one of the great gifts of our faith. You know, The forgiveness of sins Mr. Chris Grodecki, S.J., a Jesuit priest in training who spoke to our Holy Name Society not long ago during a Lenten Morning of Recollection, addressed this in his talk, Jesus, the Great Physician. Grodecki shared with us details around the daily Examen, an Ignatian spirituality practice that calls us to reflect on the events of our day to discover God s presence in our lives. The Examen leads naturally to contrition, and thus to the Sacrament of Reconciliation. And remember that Confession isn t just salve for the wound. It obliterates the wound altogether. We hear in today s Gospel the familiar story of Jesus raising his friend Lazarus from the dead. I ve said it before, but this passage for me contains one of the most powerful and certainly one of the shortest verses in all of Scripture: And Jesus wept. The words speak to Christ s humanity and to his deep love for those who are his own. Much is made in this reading of the miracle itself, as it should be. The resurrection of Lazarus! It s sort of like Easter two weeks early, after all. But we would be remiss if we did not focus also on Christ s directive to free up Lazarus still wrapped tightly in his burial cloths after he emerges from the tomb. Consider the Sacrament of Reconciliation all over again. It removes the constraints that bind each of us, that hold each of us back in our discipleship, that prevent each of us from being fully alive in Christ. Untie him and let him go. This is what Jesus does for Lazarus. Through Confession, this is what Jesus does for you and me.
