March 30, 2014 4th Sunday of Lent Page Four People Who Are Marked: The Journey of Lent By Fr. Lou Cameli Lent, of course, began on Ash Wednesday. We received ashes that have faded or were washed away, but we remain marked people. And we carry our mark across this holy season, a time of deeper reflection and coming to terms with who we really are. The ashes clearly mark us as mortal creatures, people who will one day die. Remember that you are dust, and unto dust you will return. That is a sobering reality. We receive life on this earth as a gift. It is limited and comes to an end. We must take our lives seriously as we strive to live as God wants us to live. The ashes also mark us as sinners because of what we have done and what we have failed to do. Throughout the Old Testament, we hear of people who honestly confess their sinfulness and want to return to the Lord. They impose ashes on their heads. They mark themselves as a sign of their penitence. We have heard the appeal: Repent and believe in the Gospel. Finally and most importantly ashes mark us with the mercy of God. Beyond our mortal frailty and even beyond our stubborn sinfulness, God marks us with his mercy. And that makes all the difference. The mercy of God takes our mortality and transforms it with the gift of eternal life. The mercy of God also takes our sinfulness and through forgiveness gives us his grace, a share in the very life of the Triune God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We are indeed marked people. To say this names who we are: people subject to death, weighed down by sin, but by God s gift raised up to forgiveness and new life. And now, we have the holy season of Lent to claim and re claim our identity and to rediscover the source of our hope and confidence. Whatever Lenten practices we embrace, they ought to help us know how we poor mortal sinners are finally marked by the mercy of God manifested in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. COR S CORNER Please remember our Food Pantry when you shop this weekend The foods we give out (all non perishable), cereals, rice, soups, canned vegetables and meats, tuna fish, crackers, coffee, tea, jello and puddings (the kinds to cook and ones in individual containers), canned fruits, tomato sauce and pasta. We have a freezer now and welcome any frozen foods. But they can't be left in church and chapel, they must be brought to the COR office at the Convent on Mondays (the office is open from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30p.m.). People ask for toilet tissue, paper towels, shampoo and laundry and bar soap and sugar...which when we have any, we gladly give out. On the first Saturday and Sunday of the month (April 5th and 6th) please drop the purchased items when you come to the church. Of course, any time we are grateful to receive food donations. This is just to let you know, what the Food Pantry needs to give out to people who come for help. Our Food Pantry is open every Monday from 10:00 11:00am. Po przyjeździe na Syberię miejscowy biskup Józefa Wertha z Nowosybirska skierował go do pracy w Tomsku. Parafia Tomsk, w której od ponad 16 lat posługuje jest dosyć rozległa, to terytorium większe od Polski. W ostatnich latach w pracy duszpasterskiej w tomskiej parafii ks. Andrzejowi pomaga ks. Marek Jaśkowski, również kapłan z Polski. Na co dzień księża służą katolikom mieszkającym w Tomsku, Białymstoku i ponad 30 innych miejscowościach rozrzuconych na olbrzymim obszarze tomskiego województwa. March 30, 2014 4th Sunday of Lent Page Thirteen ON YES MEN, AND ONE IN PARTICULAR Copyright 2014 by John B. Reynolds (john@jrwrites.com) An elderly gentleman at my parish died recently. Stanley Piwowarski. I had just seen his wife Bozena at church a couple of weeks earlier and I asked her after Mass how Stanley who had been having some health concerns was doing. Her shrug told me that things were about the same. As I came to understand, though, Stanley took a turn for the worse shortly thereafter, and the next thing I knew, I was listening to Bozena s voice mail message telling me her husband was gone. He was 87. Often when people upwards of 85 pass away, folks upon hearing the news says things like, Too bad, but he/she had a good life. True enough, I suppose. Eightyseven years is a good life. In Stanley s case, though, it was an extraordinary one. Dr. Stanislaw A. Piwowarski, age 87, Professor Emeritus School of Social Work at Loyola University in Chicago. Beloved husband of Bozena; loving father of Margaret and Barbara. That s how the obituary read, but man, what a back story! I met Stanley years ago when we both served on the inaugural Parish Pastoral Council formed three pastors back. He struck me around the council table as a thoughtful man, and when he spoke, he had an air of authority. Must have been the teacher in him. He was a long time parishioner even then, so I valued his input. He was easy to work with, and was willing to entertain opposing points of view concerning the topic at hand. And Stanley had a quick, warm, engaging smile that always made me smile in return. At the funeral, Bozena asked me to say a few words about Stanley after Communion. I was honored to do so. I told a few Stanley stories, but echoing words written by Stanley and Bozena s daughter Barbara and read by her friend Lisa, I added that Stanley s legacy to me would forever be his Yes to life. Yes took him from Poland when he was in his teens to fight in the war. Yes brought him to America. Yes introduced him to Bozena decades ago and the love affair just kept going. Knowing Stanley s history better than I do, my friend Lucille told me later she was glad I referenced this because Stanley was a true Yes Man. Sometimes the term is used derogatorily. But Stanley s yeses were not self serving. They were humanity serving. After Mass, a man with tears in his eyes approached me. Apparently a neighbor of the Piwowarski s, he told me that while he had seen Stanley before, he never really saw him until now. This was profound to me in the moment and it s profound to me again as I consider today s Gospel, the story of Jesus curing the man born blind (much to the Pharisees confusion/dismay as Christ effected the cure on the Sabbath). I saw in the man after the funeral tears of sadness at the loss of a friend, but tears of joy for now seeing him in a new light. At least that s how I defined my own tears that day, especially upon hearing Barbara s words through Lisa. I am not blind, but I often do not see. I m trying to see better, though. I m trying to walk more in faith and light, and less in doubt and shadow. Stanley, after all the ultimate Yes Man would want it that way.
