March 13, 2005 Fifth Sunday of Lent Page Three Our Lenten Alms: that others may benefit through our sacrifice, Lord, hear our prayer. Our alms this Lenten Season will be directed to the following: Catholic Relief Services - Tsunami St. Ferdinand Church & School Families in Need Cancer Treatment for Polish Children in Need Polish Catholic League The Catholic League for Religious Assistance to the Church in Poland was founded in the United States in 1943 during the midst of the Second World War. With many church buildings lying in ruins, the Catholic League immediately sent material help to Poland and aid in the reconstruction of the buildings and provided sacred vessels, books and vestments. The work of the Catholic League continues today. Fueled by today s current climate of opposition to the Church and its role in the Polish way of life, the Church still needs your assistance. The Catholic League for Religious Assistance to Poland continues to be a lifeline to the Church in Poland. The Catholic League provides direct assistance to both the clergy and the laity of Poland as they strive to uphold the faith. Your support of the Church in Poland allows the Catholic League for Religious Assistance to Poland to continue the work it began over fifty years ago. Through the efforts of the Catholic League, donations raised are used to educate priests; to support three major seminaries in Rome and Paris; to assist poor parishes in their charitable ministries; and to supply needy churches with liturgical vestments and sacred vessels. As we reflect on how truly blessed we are, please be aware of those less fortunate and be as generous as you are able. Our Financial Support of St. Ferdinand Parish Sunday, March 5/6, 2005: Envelopes: $ 8,743.50 Loose Cash: $ 4,316.24 TOTAL DONATIONS: $13,059.74 Thank you for your contributions to St. Ferdinand Church. Typically Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday are the weekends that we receive the greatest amount of financial support from our parishioners and visitors. Your generosity is even more important this year as we work to decrease our deficit and balance our budget. For whatever you are able to do to further Christ s mission in our parish, we are grateful. LENTEN ALMS: Hopefully you picked up one of the special Lenten Alms envelopes from the pew or the Ushers stands today, or you plan to pick one up on your way into Church next Sunday. Remember to return your Lenten Alms at Mass on Palm Sunday in the regular offertory basket by using the special LENTEN ALMS envelope. Thank you for all that you do for those in need. Daniel P. Costigan, Parish Business Manager Remember As members of the parish faith in community, it is our responsibility to Prayer remember both in concrete and spiritual ways those who cannot celebrate with us each week because they are ill. The celebration will begin at 7:00 PM in the Church. We especially hope all those who have been prevented by fear from coming to confession, those away from the sacraments for a long time, those who have felt alienated from the Church or the parish, will participate in this celebration of God s loving mercy. All will be asked to acknowledge their sinfulness before God and the gathered community, to seek mercy, and to receive the Church s absolution. Please pray that through this celebration many will be brought home, released from the burden of sin and guilt, and begin healing in Christ.

Page Four Fifth Sunday of Lent March 13, 2005 COR s O R N E R Prayer for Pope John Paul II God of infinite compassion and mercy, the lasting health of all who believe in you, hear us as we pray for your loving help for John Paul II our Pope. St. Ferdinand School to Pilot Cutting-Edge Learning Technology St. Ferdinand is one of only three schools chosen recently by the Archdiocese of Chicago to take the lead in a pilot program designed to help bring cutting-edge educational technology solutions to area schools. The program, AutoSkill s Academy of Reading and Math, a computer-based learning tool that focuses on providing reading and writing interventions for struggling learners, has already helped thousands of students nationwide raise reading and math scores. St. Ferdinand is the only Catholic elementary school in the diocese to test this unique educational program, along with St. Patrick and Resurrection High Schools. The Academy of Reading and Math software complements the principles of the No Child Left Behind agenda by providing a form of reading and writing intervention for struggling learners. Designed for deployment at the classroom level, it is intended to extend the effectiveness of a reading or math specialist to every struggling student, WHAT S NEW? St. Ferdinand School is pleased to announce... WHAT: WHO: WHERE: Wiggles and Giggles Playgroup Parents/caregivers and their little tots (infant to three years of age) St. Ferdinand School Gym 3131 N. Mason Chicago, Illinois 60634 WHEN: Every Wednesday from 9:30-10:30 AM, when school is in session, BEGINNING APRIL 6. WHY: COST: We wish to provide parents/caregivers with an opportunity to socialize with other parents and to provide young children with an environment that helps to develop their first friendships. Free of charge! The hour each week will include story time, music or action rhymes and free play in the gym, using mats, balls, a parachute, etc. supervised by Mrs. Carol, the Preschool Teacher, and/or parent helper. Please call the school office at 773-622-3022 for more information and registration. We look forward to having you and your little one join us! and makes it possible for schools like St. Ferdinand to provide individualized attention without overtaxing alreadybusy instructors. The program has already proven successful in helping students make permanent gains in reading and math proficiency by honing new skills to the point of automaticity, achieved when a learner can repeatedly perform a set task with accuracy and skill. The software works by providing educators with a snapshot of each student s current ability levels. Based on this assessment, it then places learners in an appropriate training stream. St. Ferdinand staff members Dr. Lucine Mastalerz, Nancy Donovan, Simon Mireles and Randy Peluso have already been trained on the new program, which should be up and running by April 1, just in time for the start of the fourth quarter. Correction: Please note that Nancy Donovan has been nominated for the 2005 Heart of the School Award.

March 13, 2005 Fifth Sunday of Lent Page Five Scout News The young men of our Boy Scout Troop enjoyed an evening of indoor miniature golf on Monday night at the Putting-Edge. March 13, 2005 Fifth Sunday of Lent Page Nine Is there a MASH fan in the house? I m talking about the old TV series detailing life in a Korean War mobile army surgical hospital. I m talking about Hawkeye Pierce and Trapper John McIntyre. I m talking about Radar O Reilly and Hot Lips Houlihan. And mostly today, I m talking about the bungling but likeable commander Henry Blake played by McLean Stevenson. Blake was written out of the show after the third season in 1975, but I can still recall the final scenes. With discharge papers served, Blake was going home, and after saying goodbye to his staff and surprising Hot Lips with a kiss and after the incoming wounded were safely unloaded he boarded the helicopter and flew away. But when the doctors and nurses were hard at it later on, again patching up fallen soldiers, Radar walked into the operating room to announce that Blake s plane had been shot down over the Sea of Japan, and that there were no survivors. The show ended with the busy staff reduced to stunned silence. Sadly, I thought of this while at work a few mornings back. It wasn t much past 9:00 AM on a Wednesday and several of us were hard at it in the lab when Howard, our Quality Assurance Director, walked in. He said that he was glad most of us were together because he had some news to share. It wasn t good news, though. Seems Wolfgang had passed away in the night. We all knew Wolfgang, the QA Manager for one of our member-owner grocery chains in Michigan. He d been fighting cancer for a while, but he Support Staff Sr. Gracjana Ziêba, Administrative Assistant Mrs. Wendy L. Rev. David J. Cortesi and Daniel P. Costigan, ex officio. ON HENRY BLAKE, WOLFGANG, AND LAZARUS St. Ferdinand Parish Copyright 2005 by John B. Reynolds (john@jrwrites.com) seemed to be dealing with it well. He was in for a product evaluation in December and he looked great. We did lunch that day. And I spoke with him by phone on Monday. We talked shop, and he was planning on coming down in a week or so for another cutting. But Radar O Reilly-like, there was Howard just two days later with the news, and when he shared it, the whole lab went silent, just like the MASH O.R. And silence can give way to tears. Of all the words in the Bible that speak of God s concern for humankind, I pick just three. We find them in today s Gospel about Jesus at Lazarus tomb, and I singled out these very words about ten years ago not long after my mom died when a friend asked me for my most vivid image of Christ s love:...and Jesus wept... Walking on water... Calming the seas... Raising the dead... These are all very Godly things, and perhaps because of their Godliness, I don t connect with them all that well. While I marvel at their greatness, they re a little out there for me. But hurting for the loss of a friend? Feeling another s pain? Mourning with those who mourn? These are things I connect with and understand. Whether the loss of individuals in our lives brings us to silence or tears or both, may we somehow find comfort in the empty tomb of Easter morning. Untie him and let him go, Jesus said when Lazarus stepped forth. He says the same thing to all of us, that we might not be bound. See you later, Wolfgang. We ll do lunch. John.
