Confirmation Dobry Pasterz Good Shepherd First Communion Hector Alvarado & Jessica Orzech (I) The Pastor Has Fallen Asleep This weekend we celebrate the feast of St. Stanislaus, Bishop and Martyr, and today in Kraków will be the massive procession with the relics of St. Stanislaus. Beginning at Wawel and proceeding down the winding streets of Stradom and Krakowski to Skalka (the basilica of St. Michael the Archangel) the relics of the saint in various reliquaries are solemnly carried to the traditional site of his martyrdom. There, beside the pool in which his dismembered corpse floated under the protection of the four eagles, the Cracovians gather to pay him homage. When we sing the Litany of the Saints of the Polish Nation Stanislaus is always the first saint invoked after the Blessed Virgin Mary. He is referred to as the patron of the fatherland having the honor of being the first native Polish saint. (St. Adalbert had previously been martyred in Poland but was not Polish but Czech). It was the decision of the king who appointed him bishop, Boleslaus the Bountiful, that Stanislaus be dismembered as the result of a conflict between the two. Minimal historical details survive detailing this event, but the consequences of Stanislaus death included the subsequent loss of the crown of Boleslaus caused by his impetuousness and imprudence. All of the king s glorious accomplishments were ultimately overshadowed by his public sin against his own relative, Stanislaus. The office and liturgy for the feast of St. Stanislaus contains numerous beautiful references to the martyrdom of the saint, including the following which our choir has sung on special occasions: The pastor has fallen asleep in the midst of his flock; The bridegroom lies in the embrace of his bride. Mother Church weeps, but she weeps tears of joy for her son; For he who has fallen under the sword is alive and victorious. He was the pastor of his flock for less than ten years yet the impact of his short legacy has been enormous, inspiring poets and priests, workers and visionaries. The ultimate gift of his life, falling under the sword has provided the nation and the world with a model of courage and a vision of victory as few other people have. The bridegroom was taken up to heaven by the anielski orszak to be greeted by his love, by God. Stanisław Szczepanowski died in faith. His life was sacrificed because he chose to celebrate the culture of life as opposed to the culture of death. As a shepherd he defended the poor and the weak, the rich and the powerful, even though his flock was still so young, many of them just recently baptized in Christ. Each life mattered. His martyrdom galvanized the people over centuries, a symbol of the culture of life, a symbol of solidarity, a symbol of the unity of humanity under the sign of the Cross. PASTORAL MESSAGE January 3 Stycznia 2010 Pastoral Messages May 9 Maja 2010 HOLY MASS, HOLY MOTHER CHURCH Years ago, when I was in high school, I had a chance to study the German language. I loved it so much and was pretty good at it too. Eventually I earned a chance to study in Germany for a summer. I stayed with a host family (who are still friends today) and attended school six days a week. One of the strictest rules was that we were forbidden to have any contact with the English language. If we were caught speaking, listening to, or reading English, we would be sent home. And when Germans are given rules, they tend to follow them... I ll never forget my first car ride home with my new German family. The two parents, older sister and younger brother all spoke so quickly and excitedly. Even though my German skills were very good, it was still hard to understand them. My first full German sentence to them was, Langsamer, bitte! Slower, please! Eventually my German got to be very good, and I even studied it in college. Many years later, as a Franciscan working at the United Nations, I had frequent occasion to work in Germany and Austria. I also had to learn some basic phrases in many other languages, as my ministry took me to many countries around the world. I ve developed a fascination with language and world cultures. My seminary also had many students from missionary orders, so our study of theology was influenced by the relationship between faith and culture. Maybe this fascination with culture is connected with my lack of contact, as a child, with the cultures of my parents. My mother s grandparents were Dutch immigrants, my father s parents were from Poland. I grew up in a very American household, with practically no reference to Dutch or Polish culture (except perhaps a love for Polka music, which both of my parents liked very much). Coming to Saint Stanislaus has been my first real encounter with the reality and beauty of Polish culture and language. What a blessing this has been! It has been made even richer by living with Polish immigrant priests. Also, in the past year I have tried hard to celebrate the Mass in the Polish language several times. I don t know what was harder for me to speak it, or for the Polish people to listen to me speaking it! Every time I celebrate the Mass in Polish, I am more nervous than when I said my First Mass after ordination. May hands shake, my voice wavers, and I sweat. A lot. I know I make a hundred mistakes in pronunciation some simple, some more serious. At first, I was worried that the Mass might not be reverent enough, perhaps not worthy of the People of God, perhaps not truly giving glory to God. But in the seminary, they taught us the idea of ecclesia supplet the church supplies. The simple translation of the Latin means, when the personal facility of the priest is lacking, the grace of God works in the Church to provide what might be lacking. I recognize that grace in the kind words of the Polish people who say they appreciate that I am trying; that now I know what they experienced when they first came to America; that my Polish is getting better; and that they are thankful I speak slowly! Fr. Michael MSZA ŚWIĘTA ŚWIĘTA MATKA KOŚCIÓŁ Wiele lat temu, kiedy byłem w szkole średniej, uczyłem się języka niemieckiego. Bardzo to lubiłem i byłem dobry z tego języka. W nagrodę zostałem wysłany na letni kurs niemieckiego do Niemczech. Mieszkałem u niemieckiej rodziny (do dzisiaj są moimi przyjaciółmi) i sześć dni w tygodniu chodziłem do szkoły. Jedną z najściślej przestrzeganych zasad był zakaz jakiegokolwiek kontaktu z językiem angielskim. Gdyby ktoś został przyłapany na rozmowie, słuchaniu czy czytaniu czegokolwiek po angielsku, zostałby wysłany do domu. A kiedy Niemcy wydają jakieś zasady, stosują je Nigdy nie zapomnę pierwszego przejazdu z moją nową niemiecką rodziną. Dwoje rodziców, starsza siostra i młodszy brat, wszyscy oni mówili tak szybko, że chociaż moja znajomość niemieckiego była bardzo dobra, niewiele z tego rozumiałem. Moje pierwsze zdanie wypowiedziane po niemiecku do nich było: Langsamer, bitte! (Proszę wolniej!) Ostatecznie mój niemiecki stał się bardzo dobry, a jego naukę kontynuowałem na studiach. Wiele lat później, kiedy jako franciszkanin pracowałem dla ONZ, wiele razy miałem okazję pracować w Niemczech i Austrii. Musiałem nauczyć się także podstawowych wyrażeń w innych językach, kiedy byłem wysyłany do innych krajów świata. Moją fascynacją stały się język i kultura. Również w seminarium zetknąłem się ze studentami z innych krajów, dlatego na nasze studia teologiczne wpłynęły relacje pomiędzy wiarą, a kulturą. Być może moja fascynacja poznawaniem nowych kultur brała się z braku relacji z kulturami naszych rodziców w czasach mojego dzieciństwa. Rodzice mojej mamy byli Holendrami, z kolei rodzice mojego taty byli z Polski, ale wychowałem się w bardzo amerykańskim domu, z żadnymi praktycznie kontaktami z tradycjami dziadków (może z wyjątkiem muzyki ludowej (polka), którą rodzice bardzo lubili). Przychodząc do św. Stanisława spotkałem się po raz pierwszy z pięknem polskiego języka i kultury, co uważam za błogosławieństwo. Zostało to ubogacone jeszcze bardziej przez obecność kapłanów pochodzących z Polski. W ubiegłym roku zacząłem odprawiać Mszę w języku polskim. Nie wiem, co było trudniejsze: Czy dla mnie mówić po polsku? Czy też dla Polaków słuchać mnie mówiącego w tym języku? Zawsze, kiedy odprawiam Mszę po polsku, denerwuję się bardziej niż odprawiając Mszę św. prymicyjną. Ręce mi się trzęsą, głos drży z przejęcia, na czole pojawiają się kropelki potu. Wiem, że popełniłem setki drobnych i ważniejszych błędów. Na początku martwiłem się, że odprawiałem Mszę św. nie z takim respektem, jak powinienem, może nie tak, jak zasługuje na to Boży Lud, lub może nie było to należytą chwałą oddawaną Panu Bogu. Ale w seminarium nauczono nas zasady: Ecclesia supplet (Kościół dopełni braki). To łacińskie powiedzenie oznacza, że gdzie jest brak odpowiednich zdolności kapłana, Boża łaska uzupełni wszelkie niedostatki. Widzę tę łaskę w słowach Polaków, którzy doceniają moje wysiłki; że teraz wiem, przez co oni przechodzili, kiedy przyjechali do Ameryki; że mój polski poprawia się; że są wdzięczni za to, że mówię wolno. o. This weekend we extend a special welcome to Father Jason Welle, OFM. Fr. Jason was ordained last January in Wisconsin with Fr. David Kelly. Fr. Jason lived at Saint Stanislaus a few years ago when he was in a student chaplaincy internship at the Cleveland Clinic. He also helped to chaperone the Lil Bros trip to World Youth Day in 2005. Now he is stationed at a friary in Chicago, where is is helping at a parish and studying Arabic, in preparation for advanced studies. His initial interview into the Franciscan community took place here, while we were still living in the convent! He is here to visit and to share the gift of the priesthood with us at Mass. Say hello and congratulations, and pray that more fine young men will choose the Franciscan way of life! THE ROSE PETALS A special thanks goes out to all who participated in last Sunday s May Crowning from those preparing the petals (Pat Murray), those lowering and carefully raising the petal packets (Mike Mendat), and the expertise of Stan Witczak with his careful slip knotting of the four petal bundles all of which eventually were released over the congregation and image of Mary. The crowd in attendance was larger than ever before, composed of parishioners as well as many guests from parishes which no longer offer this beautiful service. Next year the first Sunday of May falls on Divine Mercy Sunday, so we will somehow figure out how to work out the logistics, but, I assure you, it will take place as always. Women & Spirit: Catholic Sisters in America Visit this national exhibit on the 250 year history of Catholic Sisters in the United States, including artifacts, photos and videos that tell the story of the small group of pioneering women who built the schools, hospitals and social services we still know today. The exhibit opens at the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage, located at 2929 Richmond Road in Beachwood, Ohio on May 9th (Mothers Day) and runs until August 28th. STANS HISTORICAL FACT by Rob Jagelewski The violence surrounding the 1885 strike at the Newburgh Rolling Mill, which employed many of our parishioners, is revealed in an article from the New York Times which was published on July 3, 1885. The article states, During the day between 2,000 3,000 laborers and sympathizers surrounded the mill property and with threats tried to keep back the few, who were anxious to work About 8 o clock a teamster undertook to carry some iron from the mill but he was met with a shower of stones and clubs and driven back At 10 o clock the No. 1 gate was torn down and a thousand strikers made a dash at the men employed at the rod and blooming mills and drove them from their work. One of the workers was badly hurt when he was thrown from a train trestle and had a leg broken and received other injuries.
