Fr. Bob s Briefs Last week in the Gospel, we heard the events surrounding the Baptism of Jesus at the Jordan River. Following His Baptism by John in the Jordan, Jesus goes into the desert wilderness for forty days to be tempted. After fasting and praying in the desert and being tempted by the devil for forty days, Jesus hears about the imprisonment of John the Baptist. When Jesus hears that John was cast into prison, Jesus departed into Galilee to begin His public ministry. In today s Gospel at Mass, Matthew relays to us how Jesus begins His public ministry. As he was walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon who is called Peter, and his brother Andrew, casting a net into the sea; they were fishermen. He said to them, "Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men." At once they left their nets and followed him. The Italian artist Giorgio Vasari (1511-1574) beautifully illustrates today s Gospel story in his painting Calling St. Peter and St. Andrew. In his painting, Vasari depicts Jesus in the left side of the scene. Vasari shows Jesus importance by making Christ the largest figure in the painting. Jesus is larger than half the height of the painting. Jesus stretches out his left hand towards two fishermen, St. Peter and St. Andrew, a gesture of invitation, as He calls these two brothers to follow Him. Distinguishing Peter and Andrew is not particularly clear. From the Gospel of Matthew today, we read that Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, was casting a net into the sea. As the sentence in structured, in the Scriptures, the person who is casting the net is Peter, so it is reasonable to suppose that the center figure holding the net in the water in Vasari s picture is St. Peter. St. Andrew, therefore, would be the figure on the right of the image, holding the long wooden pole, and guiding the boat closer to Jesus. Moreover, the close physical proximity of the center figure to Jesus hand could also be an indication that this person is St. Peter, since this physical closeness may represent St. Peter s preeminence and primacy among Jesus Twelve Apostles. We read in the Gospel, that after Jesus says to Peter and Andrew, Follow me, they straight away left their nets and followed Him. Notice how Saints Peter and Andrew followed Jesus immediately, without seeing Him do anything yet. Writing on this Gospel passage, St. Gregory the Great writes, Peter and Andrew had seen Christ work no miracle, had heard from Him no word of the promise of eternal reward, yet at this single bidding of the Lord, they followed Him. Do we do this in our life? Do we follow the example of Peter and Andrew? How many of us have heard our family members, friends, neighbors, coworkers, or even ourselves say, I need to see it to believe it or I need to see a sign or a miracle first before I believe and follow God. What Peter and Andrew do is not what we typically do in our lives, especially regarding God and faith. Peter and Andrew believed first, without seeing any actions of Jesus or hearing any of Jesus words. Yet, very often, we are different than these two men. We want to see God s actions and hear God s words first, and then believe in God. Peter and Andrew in today s Gospel show us the primacy of belief in life, especially belief in God. Belief in God means openness to God in one s life. Belief, openness to God, means that I allow God to control my life, and I allow God s will to be done in my life. Belief, openness to God, means that I give my life totally to God, whether life is good or bad, easy or difficult. Peter and Andrew opened themselves to Jesus first. They allowed Jesus to control their life; they allowed Jesus will to be done. All without seeing any signs, miracles or hearing any words of Jesus. All too often, we are the opposite. We want signs, miracles, and words first, then believe. The Scriptures today want us to become more like Peter and Andrew, who believed first, and opened their lives totally to God. January 23 is the Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children. Please pray for the end of abortion and greater respect for the dignity of human life. May the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Good Help, help us with her maternal care, and St. Joseph pray for us. Vivat Jesus! Live Jesus!

Z biurka Ks. Proboszcza Zeszłotygodniowa Ewangelia dotyczyła Chrztu Pańskiego w rzece Jordan. Jezus wyrusza na pustynię, gdzie przez czterdzieści dni pości i jest kuszony przez Szatana. Później słyszy o uwięzieniu Jana Chrzciciela i udaje się do Galilei, aby rozpocząć działalność wśród ludzi. Właśnie o tym opowiada dzisiejszy fragment z Ewangelii według świętego Mateusza (4:18-20): Gdy [Jezus] przechodził obok Jeziora Galilejskiego, ujrzał dwóch braci: Szymona, zwanego Piotrem, i brata jego, Andrzeja, jak zarzucali sieć w jezioro; byli bowiem rybakami. Dokładnie o tym pisze święty Grzegorz Wielki w swoim komentarzu do tego fragmentu: Chrystus jeszcze nie dokonał żadnego cudu na Ich oczach; nie obiecał im też życia wiecznego wystarczyło jedno Jego słowo, aby święci Piotr i Andrzej podążyli za Nim. Czy bierzemy przykład z Piotra i Andrzeja na co dzień? Jak często słyszymy z ust bliskich: Jak zobaczę, to uwierzę? Przeważnie najpierw oczekujemy od Boga jakiegoś znaku, który utwierdziłby nas w wierze. Piotr i Andrzej postępują zupełnie na odwrót. Obaj święci pokazują nam, iż pierwszeństwo w życiu powinna mieć wiara, zwłaszcza wiara w Boga. Wierzyć w Boga oznacza być otwartym na Jego działanie w naszym życiu. Wierząc, daję Bogu przyzwolenie na kontrolowanie moich poczynań. Pragnę również, aby w moim życiu spełniła się Jego wola. Wierzyć w Boga znaczy całkowicie Mu się poddać, niezależnie od życiowych okoliczności. Piotr i Andrzej od początku otworzyli się na Jezusa; pozwolili, aby w całości kontrolował ich życie; pozwolili na to, aby spełniła się Jego wola. Nie wymagali przy tym od Jezusa żadnych deklaracji, ani cudów. Często jednak tak nie jest. Naszą wiarę uzależniamy od dowodów w postaci słów albo cudów. Dzisiaj zachęca się nas do brania przykładu ze świętych Piotra i Andrzeja, którzy od samego początku całkowicie otworzyli się na Boga. 23 stycznia przypada Dzień modlitw w intencji prawnej ochrony dzieci nienarodzonych. Módlmy się o kres aborcji oraz większe poszanowanie godności ludzkiego życia. Święta Maryjo, Matko Nieustającej Pomocy, miej nas zawsze w Swej opiece. Święty Józefie, módl się za nami. Vivat Iesus! Monthly Mass The Ladies of the Rosary gather on the first Sunday of the month at the 7:30 a.m. Mass to attend Mass as a group.
