It depicts the moment of Mary acceptance to become the handmaiden of the Lord. It depicts the point in time when salvation history was put into high gear. It depicts the conception and the incarnation of Jesus, true God and true man. Have you ever doubted that Mary was not carrying Jesus in her womb from the time of that precise moment? At that moment in time, Mary chose to accept the gift offered her, that of becoming a mother. Her choice to say YES was the inauguration of the Gospel of Life, the dedication of her body as the protector and nurturer of Jesus. Daily we see the battle of the two cultures, the culture of life and the culture of death, in our private lives and in actions in our families, country and world. How we take care of our bodies and minds, how we maintain our health, are evidence of this activity. We are always confronted with choices regarding them, whether it involves the quality and quantity of food, medications, mental activity these all involve choices. During these recent weeks we continued to see the battle of the two cultures on a wider scale. We saw the obvious destruction of life in Gaza, with hundreds of people killed in the Holy Land. We saw people killed in Afghanistan in the ongoing struggle between different ideologies. We saw stories of children killed at the hands of their own parents. And we saw the ugly head of FOCA once again threaten to takes its place on the national stage. The terminology seems so antiseptic! The Fifth Commandment might be way too offensive. Quite honestly, do not all the Commandments aim to protect the culture of Life? The Freedom of Choice Act sounds like such a noble gesture, does it not?...except for the children whose lives will be terminated. As Catholics we are invited, or expected, to let our government be made aware of our displeasure with this assault on the dignity of human life. We cannot formally promote or support the culture of death. To maintain that our disagreement on this issue is simply unimportant (as many politicians would have us think) is simply wrong. Our fight for the respect for human life extends from the issue of abortion to the issue of the battlefield to the issue of drug abuse to the issue of poverty and so on and so on. It is an insult to us to say otherwise. Your response to our government representatives regarding this matter will demonstrate the gravity of this matter. Please let your Congressman, Senator and President know that you want them to also say YES to life. PASTORAL MESSAGE FEBRUARY 1, LUTEGO 2009 CALLER I.D. This Monday is the World Day for Consecrated Life. We celebrate the gift of religious life a gift for those who have been called, and a gift for the Church and the world. We also pray that the Lord will give to young men and women the courage to answer his invitation to this life. At Saint Stanislaus, the people are accustomed to a close relationship with religious sisters and with the friars. People cannot imagine how unusual it is to have so many religious engaged in or around our parish. There are nine sisters from four orders living in three houses within one block of our church! Plus there are four friars in the rectory, several sisters who are members of the parish, and frequently there are religious brothers and sisters who come to celebrate special liturgies with us. I believe that one of the reasons why our little corner of Slavic Village remains strong and vibrant has to do with this religious presence. Just as with the laity, so also with the religious every one of us chooses to be here. We could have asked to go somewhere else, but we requested to be here. Our orders could have moved us elsewhere, could have given up on the community and parish, but they did not. Instead, our superiors have so far honored our requests to keep the charisms of our religious communities as witnesses to the Gospel in this place and time. Religious sisters, brothers, and priests occupy a special niche in the life of the Church. Most of our orders trace back to a founder, usually a saint, whose inspiration and leadership attracted followers to keep their spirit of service and presence alive. Some orders were begun so that its adherents could devote themselves to a style of life, a style that would itself be a sign of Christ in the midst of the world. Contemplative orders are the obvious examples, but so are the Franciscan Friars, who are called not to a particular ministry but to a way of life fraternity with each other, with the poor, and with all of creation. Other orders were founded to carry on a crucial ministry or apostolate. Think of the centuries of service given to the People of God by the sisters and brothers dedicated to teaching and to healing, and remember the work of the great missionary orders. In the vestibule of our church there is a poster of the men and women who are in formation for religious life and studying in and from the Diocese of Cleveland. Count the numbers! And more important, look at the faces of the young people (and some, not-so-young!) who have been chosen by God and who are answering the call. Then look around at the faces you see in our own parish, in your own neighborhood, even in your own family. Could one of those faces end up on a poster like this some day? Surely it is God who gives the call, the invitation. But often that call is mediated through his faithful people. So many religious, when reflecting back on the beginnings of their vocation, tell a similar story: Someone told them they thought he or she might be a good religious. Know someone like that? Send an invitation from God soon! Fr. Michael Change Has Come Tak, zmiana najwyższej władzy stała się faktem. Zaś przewodniczący Papieskiej Akademii Pro-Life, abp. Angielskie przysłowie mówi, że What goes around, comes around. W wolnych tłumaczeniu: Co dajesz, otrzymujesz z powrotem. Śmierć, którą Amerykanie będą exportować, przyjdzie w postaci śmierci z powrotem do miejsca, z którego wyszła. Placyd
ST. STANISLAUS CLEVELAND, OHIO ST. STAN S HISTORICAL FACT by Rob Jagelewski On April 21, 1909 a tornado struck our church and destroyed the front roof area, our bell steeples, the main stained glass window in the choir loft, the church organ, and other stained glass windows. The 5,000 pound and 2500 pound bells in the eastern bell tower were blown out of the tower and into the school yard. This April 2009 will be the 100th Anniversary of this event. Arthur Niedbalski, age seven, was killed by flying debris from our destroyed steeples. Prior to the tornado the steeples soared to over 230 feet. Now our bell towers measure over 130 feet. The Cleveland Plain Dealer reported, The most destructive storm in the history of the city plowed through Cleveland yesterday afternoon Within five minutes it worked the ruin of $1,000,000 in property, instantly killed three people, brought injury to 80 men, women, and children. Four of the hurt died before midnight, bringing the number killed to seven Cutting a diagonal path through the city, the blast raged from the gullies of the south side through the center of Cleveland s home district, its fury not ending until a trail of devastation reached across the city from end to end. TWENTY YEARS OF SERVICE CONGRATULATIONS DENISE O REILLY Our school secretary, Denise O Reilly, was honored last Monday at the 8:30 Mass attended by the whole St. Stanislaus Elementary School Student Body. The presentation of the award was planned as a surprise by Mrs. Deborah Martin, Principal, and the rest of the school staff. They must have kept the secret well because Mrs. O Reilly had no inkling she would be honored until she was called to accept her award. We are proud of our dedicated and tireless school staff, especially Mrs. O Reilly who has worked hard to maintain the quality standards and experience our kids receive from their Catholic education.
