89 Collection-of-the-genus-Dryopteris-Adans.---the-University-of-Silesia 89 Collection of the genus Dryopteris Adans. in the Herbarium of the University of Silesia (KTU) ADAM ROSTAÑSKI 1, IZABELA GEROLD-ŒMIETAÑSKA 2 1 University of Silesia, Faculty of Biology and Environmental Protection, Department of Plant Systematics, Jagielloñska 28, 40-032 Katowice; e-mail: adam.rostanski@us.edu.pl; 2 Herbarium KTU, 75-go Pu³ku Piechoty 1, 41-500 Chorzów; ktu.herbarium@us.edu.pl ABSTRACT: It has been 35 years since the foundation of the KTU Herbarium. Today, the herbarium contains more than 120 000 specimens. This fact makes the herbarium and its collection one of the medium-sized herbaria in Poland. An important proportion of the collection includes specimens of different pteridophytes (Pteridophyta). In 2009, the collection contained 2645 herbarium specimens of ferns and club mosses. The genus Dryopteris is represented by 8 species (551 specimens). Since 2008, a part of the herbarium database (including ferns) has been accessible through the website of the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF). ABSTRAKT: Minê³o 35 lat od utworzenia Zielnika Naukowego Uniwersytetu Œl¹skiego (KTU). Obecnie kolekcja liczy ponad 120 000 arkuszy, co czyni j¹ jednym z zielników œredniej wielkoœci w Polsce. Wa n¹ czêœæ zbiorów stanowi¹ pteridofity (Pteridophyta). W 2009 kolekcja zawiera³a 2645 arkuszy zielnikowych paproci i wid³aków. KEY WORDS: herbarium, Dryopteris collection, KTU, University of Silesia Introduction It has been more than 35 years since the foundation of the Herbarium of the Silesian University (KTU) (Holmgren et al. 1990; Mirek 1990; Mirek et al. 1997; Rostañski, Krawczyk 1993). Its collection documents the research ROSTAÑSKI A., GEROLD-ŒMIETAÑSKA I. 2009. Collection of the genus Dryopteris Adans. in the Herbarium of the University of Silesia (KTU). In: E. Szczêœniak, E. 90 Adam-Rostañski,-Izabela-Gerold-Œmietañska 90 carried out by Silesian botanists within the region and neighbouring areas as well as throughout Poland. Collections from scientific expeditions to different parts of the world, as well as specimens coming from the Mediterranean area, Western and Eastern Europe, Asia, North and South America, which are an effect of exchange or donation of private collectors form only a small part of the whole material deposited in the hebrarium. Currently, the collection comprises of more than 120 000 specimens. This fact puts the herbarium and its collection in the league of medium-sized herbaria in Poland. In 2004, the collection of pteridophytes (Pteridophyta) comprised 2 100 specimens representing 44 genera and over 130 taxa (Rostañski et al. 2004). At present the collection of ferns includes 2 645 specimens and is the important part of the general collection. Since 2005, the KTU Herbarium has been a member of the Polish Biodiversity Information Network (PolBIN; www.ksib.pl) which is a part of the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF; www.gbif.org). Participation in the Polish Biodiversity Information Network creates a good opportunity to open the collection of the KTU Herbarium to a wide range of interested researchers. Since 2008, a part of the herbarium database (including ferns) has been Fig. 1. Rodzaj Dryopteris w zbiorach Zielnika Naukowego Uniwersytetu Œl¹skiego reprezentuje 551 okazów z 8 taksonów: D. affinis (8 okazów), D. carthusiana (182), D. cristata (5), D. dilatata (160), D. expansa (8), D. filix-mas (173), D. remota (14) i D. serra (1). Ponad 98 % okazów Dryopteris pochodzi z terenu Polski, natomiast pojedyncze alegaty pochodz¹ z W³och (3), Czech (5), Austrii (1) oraz Kuby (1).
