As they face the myriad of challenges and decisions that each day is destined to bring, may they be anchored by their faith, protected by Your presence and comforted by the knowledge that they are loved by You and by this community of faith. Grant that, meeting danger with courage, and all occasions with discipline loyalty, they may truly serve the cause of justice and peace to the honor of your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Daniel Guziec SPC Jeffrey Foerster Robert Peregrino May God keep you safe! It remains our sincere hope that through word and deed, education and example, we young and old one heritage or another, would all come to know that our care for Our His really, is done through small and not so small gestures of help and support. As a source of hope and inspiration it is our intention to publish those names in print who have done outstanding work in the course of the week to plant a rose so to speak along the way as we carry the cross in the glory of the victory He won. Our part though small can and does grow. We might need to see the proof. The names are both a thank you and attempt to have lots of roses where ever the cross is. Page Four Twenty-first Ordinary Sunday August 24, 2008 Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time RUMOR HAS IT... During Jesus time, there were many beliefs circulating about the Messiah, the Christ, the Anointed of God. Matthew, Mark, and Luke all recount the story of Peter s profession of faith at Caesarea Philippi; only Matthew inserts the portion we hear today in which this inbreaking manifestation of faith for Peter makes of him the rock on which Jesus can found a church. Jesus knows, as he illustrated earlier in Matthew s Gospel with the parable of the houses built on sand and rock, that nothing can endure that doesn t have a sure foundation. We also hear Jesus today immediately follow up Peter s profession with a strict command not to go around right away and tell this to others. The faith that breaks in is the foundation, but it takes time and teaching and discernment to comprehend it adequately in order to tell others about it. Indeed, in all three Gospels, the very first thing Jesus does after he is revealed as Christ through Peter s faith is to begin teaching his followers that to be Messiah or Christ means to suffer much and to die, neither of which was commonly believed about God s Anointed One. ON EARTH AS IN HEAVEN Throughout the Gospels there is a relentless teaching by Jesus that how we live and act on earth is intimately connected to the workings of God s heavenly reign. Your will be done on earth as in heaven we pray, along with forgive us as we forgive others. In Matthew s Gospel the Last Judgment is portrayed with us being told that the manner in which we treated the hungry, poor, lowly, and oppressed is how we treated Christ. Today Jesus gives Peter and all of us, the baptized, the church our vocation. We can misread or misunderstand this passage to think that we have been imbued with some sort of control over the workings of heavenly grace and mercy. Rather, Jesus gives us a potent (and a bit overwhelming) charge to live the life of heaven s boundless forgiveness, to be witnesses to him, the Messiah, the Christ who, as he died on the cross to fulfill the work of those names, made his last words, Father, forgive them. All rights reserved CHRIST OUR HOPE You can answer His call Needed: Religious Education Teacher or Assistant When: Sunday Mornings 9:00AM-10:30AM Beginning: Sun., Sept. 21st, 2008 To teach is to touch the lives of many. You share a part of yourself with all whose lives you touch. To teach is to believe in what you teach. No experience necessary just a burning desire to bring children closer to God. Religious education is possible because individuals dare to act on their deepest convictions. Those who volunteer for this special ministry discover others who share their vision. To volunteer or receive more information, please call Fr. Torba 622-5900 x 231 or Dr. Mastalerz 622-3022 x 350. THE KEYS OF HEAVEN For though you think that heaven is still shut up, remember that the Lord left the keys of it to Peter here, and through him to the, which keys everyone will carry, if they have been questioned and made confession [of faith]. Obejmij nas Swoją kochającą i macierzyńską opieką. O, Królowo i Matko, bądź naszą Pocieszycielką i Siłą! August 24, 2008 Twenty-first Ordinary Sunday Page Thirteen Coming off a leg injury that had me laid up for several days without any running time, I was eager to join my training group on a recent Saturday morning. I didn t need to be at the lakefront until 6:30 AM, but I left the house at 5:45--it s only a twenty-minute drive--because in addition to being eager, I was also a bit anxious about how the leg would hold up. Bob Seger s Like a Rock spoke quietly from the radio as I drove east toward the sunrise. I thought I knew the song, but I guess I didn t really, for in listening to the lyrics for the probably the hundredth time, I was surprised by what they told me. My leg was fine and the pain went away, but the lyrics stayed with me, even though all I could remember for the next few hours was the familiar hook. It was playing again in my head the other night when I asked my wife and son if they knew what the song was actually about. You mean, beyond the Chevy truck commercial? Gail asked. In truth, this has long been my association with the hit single, too, but as a fifty-four year old grizzled athlete trying to hang on the glory days, the song goes deep. I had to look the lyrics up when I got home, and I think that the message that they bear is worth sharing. Stood there boldly, sweatin in the sun/ Felt like a million, felt like number one/ The height of summer, I d never felt that strong/ Like a rock. I was eighteen, didn t have a care/ Working for peanuts, not a dime to spare/ but I was lean and solid everywhere/ Like a rock. Reynolds (john@jrwrites.com) St. Ferdinand Parish my late teens and early twenties when I used to fly over the running trails. Flashing forward again, however, I admitted to myself that it often hurts these days from the start of my run to the finish. And I m sure not flying anymore. You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, Jesus says in the Gospel. After listening to Seger, I now see Peter--and the --with fresh perspective. My hands were steady, my eyes were clear and bright/ My walk had purpose, my steps were quick and light/ And I held firmly to what I felt was right/ Like a rock. Seger sings. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, Jesus says. And I stood arrow-straight/ Unencumbered by the weight of all these hustlers and their schemes, Seger sings. and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it, Jesus says. Catholic tradition puts Peter as the first bishop of Rome. Millenniums later, the --despite everything--is still here. Like a rock, Standin arrow-straight/ Like a rock, chargin from the gate/ Like a rock, carryin the weight/ Like a rock Sometimes, I really want to be young again, you know? Tell me I m not alone here... Yet even if we re all getting older, we re all caught up at the same instant in something alpha-and-omega timeless, making us, in a sense, young beyond our years. Like a rock, the sun upon my skin/ Like a rock, hard against the wind/ Like a rock I see myself again/ Like a rock.
