MSc thesis guidelines MSc thesis is a final thesis that students write to complete their master degree program. It is compatible with the description of a graduate profile included in the standards of teaching for the following fields of study: International Trade Relations and Tourism. I. Content-related requirements 1. The topic and the content of the MSc thesis should be compatible with the field of study. 2. MSc thesis can take the forms of: systemic analysis a description of economic theory or of a fragment of economic practice, project a proposal for new developments or improvements, research the analysis of the results of empirical study and their exhaustive interpretation, the discovery of new interrelations or new aspects of economic processes 3. MSc thesis should include: the statement of the problem, motivation for undertaking research, the place of the problem in existing literature, the use of research methods and tools for analysis, description of results of the research, summary of results and the formulation of conclusions. 4. Writing a MSc thesis should equip a student with the following: the ability to evaluate and to use the existing theories and research in the field, the ability to expand the student s knowledge by conducting research and gathering appropriate bibliography from all available Polish and foreign sources, the ability to diagnose, formulate and evaluate the problem, the ability to invent and plan new solutions or to modify the existing ones, the ability to use analytical skills and methods of scientific enquiry, the ability to identify and analyze phenomena and to draw conclusions, the ability to use correct and appropriate academic language. 1
II. Formal requirements 1. Title page (see the Appendix) 2. Declaration of self-completion of the thesis in A5 format ( Oświadczenie ) which should be placed between the transparent cover and the Title page (see the Appendix) 3. Table of contents 4. Introduction which should include: a general description of the chosen topic, the explanation of the choice of such topic, the statement of the purpose and the scope of the thesis, a description of research methods, information about the content of the following chapters, a brief characteristics of the chosen literature. 5. Chapters of the thesis. NUMBERS two-, three- and four-digit numbers are written together (e.g. 1234), starting from five-digit numbers a space every three digits starting from the right should be applied (e.g. 12 345). Decimal numbers should be separated with a dot (e.g. 2.53). TABLES should be put in the text or at the end of the thesis as appendices. The title of a table is put above it, the source below (see Appendix 1). FIGURES title and source is placed under a figure (see Appendix 1) 6. Conclusion which includes the description of the results of research, statements on the solutions to the problems mentioned and possible ways of solving the problems in the future. 7. Reference list which is composed according to the requirements specified in the Appendix to Zarządzenie nr 39/2011 Rektora UEP z dnia 25.07.2011 roku dotyczącego Zasad tworzenia przypisów bibliograficznych i bibliografii załącznikowej na UEP (see Appendix 2). 8. A list of legal acts (only when necessary). 9. A list of web sources (with the date of access or publication). 10. List of Tables. 11. List of Figures. 12. List of Appendices. 13. Suggested length of the MSc thesis is 60-80 pages. 2
I. Editing requirements 1. A4 format, typewritten on both sides with the exception of the Title page and the Declaration of self-completion. 2. Font: Times New Roman 3. Font size: 12 pkt. 4. Line-spacing: 1,5 5. Margins: top 2,5 cm bottom 2,5 cm left 3,5 cm, right 1,6 cm 6. The BSc thesis should be left and right justified. 7. Each paragraph should start with an indention (0,5 cm). 8. All the pages should be numbered, the number should appear at the bottom of the page. 9. References should follow the Harvard System specified in the Appendix to Zarządzenie nr 39/2011 Rektora UEP z dnia 25.07.2011 roku dotyczącego Zasad tworzenia przypisów bibliograficznych i bibliografii załącznikowej na UEP (see Appendix 2). 10. The MSc thesis should be submitted in three copies, two of which should be typewritten and printed on both sides and bound in a soft cover, and the third copy should be printed on both sides and with two pages per sheet (A4 paper, horizontally) also in a soft cover, the front cover should be transparent. They should contain a cd which includes: a) the text of the thesis saved in one pdf file with the surname of the author, their credit book number and the abbreviation of the type of the thesis e.g., kowalski22136mgr, b) a folder named zapas which includes the file with the thesis, c) the cd should be placed in a paper envelope, and the envelope should be glued to the back cover of one of the copies of the paper which will be kept at the University. On the front of the envelope the name and surname, the title of the thesis, the name of the faculty, the name of the course and the name of the specialization, the year of graduation and the name of the supervisor should appear. 11. Between the cover and the title page the author should place a single sheet of paper (A5 format) containing signed declaration of the self-completion of the thesis. 3
