From the Pastor s Desk Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, On this weekend of Labor Day, I invite us to remember and pray for all those who work and are also looking for work. In the history of our Church, there are many writings that address the dignity of the person in relationship to work. Rerum Novarum: On capital and Labor Encyclical of Pope Leo XIII promulgated on May 15, 1891. 2. On the Development of Peoples Populorum Progressio Encyclical Letter of His Holiness Pope Paul VI Proulgated on March 26, 1967 Some information on the development of our Labor Day. History: In 1882, Matthew Maguire, a machinist, first proposed the holiday while serving as secretary of the CLU (Central Labor Union) of New York. Others argue that it was first proposed by Peter J. By the time it became a federal holiday in 1894, thirty states officially celebrated Labor Day. Fearing further conflict, legislation making Labor Day a national holiday was rushed through Congress unanimously and signed into law a mere six days after the end of the strike. The September date originally chosen by the CLU of New York and observed by many of the nation s trade unions for the past several years was selected rather than the more widespread International Workers Day because Cleveland was concerned that observance of the latter would be associated with the nascent Communist, Syndicalist and Anarchist movements that, though distinct from one another, had rallied to commemorate the Haymarket Affair in International Workers Day. All U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and the territories has made it a statutory holiday. End of summer: Labor Day has come to be celebrated by most Americans as the symbolic end of the summer.
