As parishioners, you are probably asked by guests about many things in our church, so this will give you the background concerning one of the mitres of Blessed John Paul which now graces our shrine area, as if in constant prayer to Jesus, Mary and Stanislaus for their help through John Paul s intercession. On the evening of Nov. 8, 2005, the Shrine Church of St. Stanislaus was entrusted with a gift from Archbishop Stanislaw Dziwisz at his residence in Krakow, Poland a relic of John Paul the great one of his mitres. Accepting this on behalf of the Cleveland parish were its pastor, Rev. Michael Surufka, OFM, and David Krakowski, Director of Music and Liturgy at the Shrine. Rev. Dr. Krzystof Koprowski of Zamosc was also among the entourage who visited with the Archbishop while on pilgrimage to the holy places dear to St. Stanislaus, John Paul II and, now, her newest Shepherd. To the delight of the Archbishop, the Clevelanders presented him with mementos and photographs gathered during his visit to their parish in 1969 while serving as secretary to then Karol Cardinal Wojtyla. During that historic visit to Cleveland, Cardinal Wojtyla presented the parish with a relic of St. Stanislaus, bishop and martyr. In 2003 the church installed the relic in a newly restored case in the area of the Marian tryptic to commemorate the 750th anniversary of the canonization of St. Stanislaus in 1253. Archbishop Dziwisz was happy to hear that on May 8, 2004 the church had been designated as a diocesan shrine by Bishop Anthony Pilla, Bishop of Cleveland. Upon seeing the photographs of the church s restoration Dziwisz was overwhelmed by its beauty saying, This should be a basilica! Likewise, he was thoroughly impressed by the work and dedication of the community of St. Stanislaus along with its dedication to the promulgation of Catholic and Polish ideal in our American society, a concern he inherited from his predecessor and mentor. The Archbishop was interested in and delighted about the shrine s newest project, that of the commissioning of an icon of St. Stanislaus and John Paul II to be written in Krakow, at Skalka, and then brought back in pilgrimage to the United States, its final place of reposition to be at the Shrine Church of St. Stanislaus in Cleveland. After excusing himself, he (Dziwisz) retired to his study to retrieve some items for the pilgrims to see, and, possibly, take back to Cleveland. Among them was one which particularly stood out a mitre of John Paul II. Referred to as a Mitra auriphrygiata one of the three types of mitres, the embroidered relic displays symbols associated with the Four Evangelists, namely Matthew (child), Mark (lion), Luke (oxen) and John (eagle). With white silk as the background, the four symbols of woven gold, red and other colors together represent the Holy Gospel to which John Paul dedicated his life. The mitre itself is symbolic of the bishop s authority. As the late Holy Father stated in his book Rise, Let Us Be On Our Way: The newly ordained bishop receives the mitre as a reminder of his commitment to let the light of holiness shine in him and to prove worthy to receive the unfading crown of glory when Christ, the Supreme Shepherd, will appear. To be in the presence of something so powerful, so historical, so sacred, was overwhelming. After showing the mitre to his guests, allowing each to hold it, Archbishop Dziwisz instructed Fr. Dr. Koprowski to replace it into its red silk case. Then the Archbishop handed the relic to Fr. Surufka saying, This is for you and your parish. Overwhelmed by the magnitude of the gift, Fr. Michael and the others were speechless. It was as though John Paul was right there with them in his old Krakow apartment, sitting at the table in his salon, welcoming old friends and extending his blessings yet one more time. A few years later the mitre became a permanent object of veneration as it assumed its place in the shrine area, purposely positioned to convey the constant prayers of Blessed John Paul kneeling before the sacred image of Our Lady of Czestochowa holding Jesus and the relic of St. Stanislaus which he, himself, brought to this very church as a symbol of thanksgiving to Polish Americans who helped Poland during and after WWII. To date, thousands of prayers have been submitted at that shrine for his intercession. Many have been answered and he is prepared to listen to many more. Ours prayers for his canonization have been answered even though the crowd at the third Thursday Mass has diminished. Of course, it only takes a few where two or more of you are gathered in my name. Co ja mogę zrobić dla bliźniego? 20 stycznia 1961roku zaprzysiężony na trzydziestego piątego prezydenta Stanów Zjednoczony Ameryki John Fitzgerald Kennedy, wypowiedział słynne słowa: Nie pytaj, co twój kraj może zrobić dla ciebie; zapytaj, co ty możesz zrobić dla swojego kraju. Czy inspiracją dla jedynego katolickiego prezydenta USA mogła być dzisiejsza ewangelia? Święty Łukasz przytaczając przypowieść Jezusa, przekazuje nam Jego pytanie: Jak myślisz, który z tych trzech okazał się bliźnim dla tego, kto wpadł między zbójców? (Łk 10,36). Na pytanie biegłego w Prawie: Kto jest moim bliźnim (Łk 10,29), Jezus ostatecznie odpowiada pytaniem, które zmienia kierunek: nie pytaj, kto jest bliźnim dla ciebie; zapytaj, dla kogo ty możesz być bliźnim. Być może jest to dla wielu z nas oczywiste: mam być dobry dla innych. To nie jest takie trudne i chyba nie jest problemem wyrobić w sobie jakąś generalną życzliwość dla innych ludzi. Kocham wszystkich Polaków, kocham moje miasto (i jego mieszkańców), kocham moją parafię to nawet łatwo powiedzieć. Problem zaczyna się wtedy, kiedy ci inni ludzie stają się tym jednym, konkretnym człowiekiem, który potrzebuje pomocy. Miłość bliźniego to nie piękna idea, ale bardzo konkretna sytuacja. Wyraźnie pokazuje to przypowieść o miłosiernym Samarytaninie. Staje on wobec konkretnej sytuacji i najpierw łamie prawo o czystości rytualnej, które stało się przeszkodą dla kapłana i lewity. Dla nich ważniejsza była religijna poprawność niż człowiek, który potrzebuje pomocy. Miłość Samarytanina to nie deklaracje, ale konkretna pomoc. Była ona jednak możliwa dlatego, że ów podróżnik miał coś, czym mógł pomóc. W swoim bagażu miał apteczkę pierwszej pomocy, czyli wino i oliwę oraz bandaże, ambulansem stało się jego juczne zwierzę, odziałem OIOM gospoda. W czasach, gdy nikomu nie śniło się o Narodowym Funduszu Zdrowia, musiał dysponować także gotówką, by poszkodowany mógł powrócić w dobrych warunkach do pełni zdrowia. By móc skutecznie pomagać bliźnim, muszę mieć to coś. Nie da się świadczyć miłości tylko przez modlitwę i życzliwe myślenie o innych. Czasami nie wystarczy powiedzieć: pomodlę się za ciebie.czasami trzeba zakasać rękawy i wziąć się do ciężkiej pracy. Wszystko, co mam moje dobra materialne, inteligencja, siła, spryt, talenty może stać się narzędziem miłości. Potrzeba jednak dystansu wobec tego, co posiadam. Nie pomogę drugiemu, gdy będę nieustannie kalkulował: co ja z tego będę miał, czy za dużo nie stracę, czy zostanie coś dla mnie. I tu dochodzimy do ostatniej, najważniejszej sprawy, kiedy mówimy o miłości. Wiemy już, że miłość to nie idea ani piękny uśmiech. Miłość to konkret, ale przecież tak może kochać również ateista jest wiele sytuacji nagłaśnianych przez media, w których wszyscy, bez względu na religię, wyznanie i światopogląd, ramię w ramię zbierają pieniądze na ofiary trzęsienia ziemi, budują wały przeciwpowodziowe, przynoszą jedzenie i odzież dla tych, którzy stracili wszystko w pożarze. Dlaczego to wezwanie do pomocy potrzebującym znalazło się w Ewangelii św. Łukasza? Dlaczego stanowi część Dobrej Nowiny i Zbawienia w Jezusie Chrystusie? Czy wystarczy powiedzieć, że ewangelista Łukasz, jako lekarz z wykształcenia, był szczególnie wrażliwy na tego typu sytuacje i patrzył na nie okiem specjalisty? Jezus Chrystus rozpoczyna tę przypowieść przypomnieniem przykazania miłości Boga i bliźniego, które każdy pobożny Żyd odmawiał dwa razy dziennie. To było swoiste Credo wyznanie wiary Narodu Wybranego. Kochać Boga, siebie i bliźniego. Kiedy Jezus wzywa do miłości, to jednocześnie sam staje się najdoskonalszym jej przykładem, a całe Pismo Święte ostatecznie wypełnia się w śmierci i zmartwychwstaniu Jezusa Chrystusa. To tutaj odkrywamy, co to znaczy kochać naprawdę; to tutaj widzimy, że prawdziwa miłość zawsze prowadzi na krzyż. Miłość ukrzyżowana porzuca kalkulacje, obawy i zabezpieczenia. Miłosierny samarytanin to figura Jezusa Chrystusa, który odrzucony przez swój naród pochyla się nad grzesznikiem, podnosi go z jego upadku i niesie do Niebieskiej Ojczyzny. Płaci za nasze zbawienie swoim krzyżem, abyśmy żyli naprawdę, żyli wiecznie.
