Page Four Fifth Sunday of Easter April 20, 2008 There is the little truism that Where ever you are, that s were you are. This is both a geographical and spiritual-logical positioning. The other day I woke up from a deep sleep and in that state of dazedness picked up the phone to stop the alarm clock s ringing. Our consciousnesses are not always awake before our bodies. One of the more difficult questions to answer honestly is about how we are. When picking up a towel from the (Creighton University) athletic center s supply counter, the young students will always ask me, How are you? I answer often that I will not know until I am halfway through my run. This is close to the truth. We usually do not give the absolutely honest answer when asked about how we are. Sometimes it depends on who is asking and how much information can they take and how much do we want to give. Some Thoughts SUNDAY REFLECTION In praying, God is more present to us than we The better question is, Self, where are you? are to ourselves. We can ask, God, where are you? The how and where of our spirits, memo- ries, bodies, are the beginning of our finding God s finding us. God s truth is meeting us in ours and often we do not know where ours is.we can be aware of where we once were or wish we were, but being awake to the simplicity and humility of our present, right-now self... this takes time and silence. Sometimes we answer the how question with a quick fine, how are you? The observant listener would know that we do this as an avoidance defense. With God, in prayer, we do well to sit in our own pew and allow ourselves to be met right there, in the where of our truth. As we prepare to be met in the Eucharistic celebration, we will do well to go face to face with the simple encounters with our truths as we and others meet us. We can answer the How are you questions a little more reflectively and honestly. When we do this, we just might find prayer more intimate and peaceful.. Larry Gillick, S. Since 2002 Wieslaw Jelen has been its choirmaster. What distinguishes the Warsaw Polonia Choir from other amateur choirs is its rich repertoire of patriotic and historic songs. Apart from well known compositions which are al- ways willingly listened to and cause great emotions, the Polonia Choir performs songs which were created far from the homeland. They tell about the history of Polish nation and remind of all the beautiful and difficult moments of history.

(McManus) 12:00AM Reservd (Chapel) 12:30PM Baptism in English (Church) PILGRIMAGE TO 49TH INTERNATIONAL EUCHARISTIC CONGRESS Open to Catholics from Across the Archdiocese of Chicago CHICAGO, IL (April 8, 2008) A group of Chicago area Catholics will attend the 49 th International Eucharistic Congress June 20-22 in Quebec City, Canada as part of a ten-day pilgrimage that includes stops at North American shrines in Canada and the U.S. Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I., Archbishop of Chicago, will attend the Congress and will meet with the Chicago participants. The pilgrimage is being organized under the auspices of the Archdiocese s Pope John Paul II Eucharistic Adoration Association. The tour departs Chicago early Sunday morning, June 15, with stops at the Venerable Solanus Casey Center in Detroit on June 15, the National Shrine of Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha in Fonda, NY on June 16, Saint Joseph s Oratory of Mount Royal in Montreal on June 17 and 18 and the Shrine of Our Lady of the Cape in Cap-de-la- Madeleine, Quebec on June 19. Four days and three nights will be spent in Quebec City, allowing pilgrims to: participate in the Eucharistic procession through the city s streets on June 19, tour the Shrine of St. Anne de Beaupre, Canada s oldest pilgrimage site, on June 20 and attend workshops and daily Mass as part of the Eucharistic Congress on June 20 and 21. On Sunday, June 22, the pilgrims will participate in the final ceremony and outdoor Mass on the Plains of Abraham in Quebec City s Battlefields Park before meeting privately with Cardinal George. On the return trip to Chicago, the tour will stop at the Shrine of Our Lady of Martyrs in Auriesville, NY, and at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima in Lewiston, NY. Jana Ignacego Paderewskiego został powołany przez Społeczną Fundację Pamięci Narodu Polskiego w dniu 11 listopada 1993 roku. Założycielem zespołu, pierwszym dyrektorem artystycznym był pan Jerzy Myrcha- Karpiński. Chór Polonia występuje z programem historyczno - patriotycznym, opiewającym dzieje narodu i państwa Polskiego. Wykonuje także pieśni sakralne, ludowe i okolicznościowe. W repertuarze ma ok. 200 utworów. Chór bardzo wiele koncertuje. Brał udział w wielu prestiżowych koncertach np. z okazji 200 rocznicy hymnu narodowego w Sali Kongresowej Pałacu Kultury, z okazji Światowego Zjazdu Kombatantów Polskich w Filharmonii Narodowej i wiele innych. Od stycznia 2002 roku chórem dyryguje Wiesław Jeleń. Od maja 2003 roku patronat nad Zespołem objął Adam Struzik, Marszałek Województwa Mazowieckiego. April 20, 2008 Fifth Sunday of Easter Page Thirteen ON KNOWING THE WAY TO SAN JOSE, AND ELSEWHERE Copyright 2008 by John B. Reynolds (john@jrwrites.com) When Dionne Warwick recorded her 1968 hit Do You Know the Way to San Jose, I was fourteen years old. I liked the song because it was playful and fun, but I ve come to learn that Warwick didn t want to record it originally. Thought it was silly. Songwriters Burt Bacharach and Hal David persuaded her, though, so she finally hit the studio, and all these years later, the melody and lyrics are still fresh Do you know the way to San Jose?/ I've been away so long. I may go wrong and lose my way/ Do you know the way to San Jose?/ I'm going back to find some peace of mind in San Jose. I had no idea when I was fourteen and singing the song in my head that I d begin writing a weekly column for the church some twenty-seven years later, or that thirteen years later still, while writing one of those columns, I d be singing the song all over again. Life s funny that way. It s not that I ve given Do You Know the Way to San Jose much thought these four decades now, but such is the beauty of a great song. It can stay with you for years and surface when the time is right, and as I consider the Gospel reading for the Fifth Sunday of Easter, it hits me at this very moment that the time is exactly right. Where I am going you know the way, Jesus tells his disciples. Thomas pleads, Master, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way? Jesus responds, I am the way and the truth and the life We understand this, don t we? Deep down? When everything else is stripped away? Given all the Catholic education and Gospel readings and homilies we ve been through, don t we know that Jesus is the answer? Of course we do. And yet we get lost again and again in the rush of life and all that it seems to promise us. Fame and fortune is a magnet/ It can pull you far away from home/ With a dream in your heart you're never alone/ Dreams turn into dust and blow away/ And there you are without a friend/ You pack your car and ride away But ultimately--and even if our dreams hit--where do we go when the lights go out? Keep in mind one very important thing, my friends: we are not physical beings with a spiritual element. We are instead spiritual beings who just happen to be walking the earth for a few years. Our real citizenship is in the Kingdom with the angels and saints, and Jesus himself gets kind of specific about it: In my Father s house there are many dwelling places. If there were not, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? He has prepared places for all of us because we are his brothers and sisters, and heaven is our truest home. Metaphorically speaking, then--and recalling Christ s words--let s put Paradise in place of San Jose and see what we get: You can really breathe in Paradise/ They've got a lot of space. There'll be a place where I can stay A silly song, Dionne? I don t think so. Not for a minute. Not when I was fourteen. And definitely not now.
