October 19, 2014 29th Ordinary Sunday Page Thirteen We all know today s Gospel passage from the Evangelist Ma hew, en tled in my bible as Paying tax to the Emperor. The same story from the Evangelist Mark is en tled, Tribute to the Emperor, and the Evangelist Luke version is en tled the same. Ma hew s and Mark s tellings have both the Pharisees and/or their underlings approach Jesus, along with the Herodians (who favored the tax because they were in King Herod s camp, and Herod was in Caesar s camp). Luke calls these people approaching Jesus spies sent in the guise of honest men. In all cases, though, the intended end game is the same: to embarrass Jesus, to trip him up in his speech, to force him to choose one allegiance (God) over another (the state). Teacher, they begin, we know that you are a truthful man and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth Tell us then, what is your opinion: Is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar or not? Jesus counters quickly and decisively, first by chiding his antagonists, and then by actually engaging them in the conversa- on. Why are you trying to trip me up, you hypocrites? he responds. Then he asks for the coin used to pay the tax. When his challengers hand him the Roman coin, Jesus con nues, Whose image is this, and whose inscrip on? The challengers reply, Caesar s, which prompts Jesus to say in turn, Then give to Caesar what is Caesar s, but give to God what is God s. Ma hew completes his telling of the story with, Taken aback by his reply, they went off and le him. Reynolds (john@jrwrites.com) St. Ferdinand Parish knew no bounds. And per Luke, They were unable to trap him publicly in speech. His answer completely disconcerted them and reduced them to silence. Again in all three versions, Jesus uses the intended trap as a teaching moment, and like all good teachers, he leaves his ques oners not necessarily with answers, but with food for thought. As I ponder the passage, and as I ponder further that each evangelist quotes Jesus the same when it comes to giving to Caesar what is Caesar s and to God what is God s, I wonder what it means. What exactly it means. The giving-to-caesar part seems straigh orward, but I remember reading somewhere once that to understand the giving-to-god part, we have to go back to the Book of Genesis. OK. And there, we find this passage: God created man in his image; in his divine image he created him; male and female he created them. Do you see the connec on? When given the Roman coin, Jesus asks, Whose image is this? The coin was made in Caesar s image, so it ul mately belongs to Caesar. By comparison, we are made in God s image, so we ul mately belong to God. Yes, we pay the state what they are due, but what they are due--though it may not seem to be the case each April--is finite. But since everything we have--and everything we are--is God-given, everything we have/are is already God s. What is God s due, then? Our very selves. Which is easy to forget dayto-day. So day-to-day, let s all strive not to. Classes are held in English on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:30PM in the Church, and in Polish on the last Tuesday of each month at 7:30PM in the Church. Following registration, the sacrament of Baptism is celebrated in English on the second Saturday each month at 6:00PM and on the fourth Sunday of the month at the 12:30PM Mass. The sacrament of Baptism is celebrated in Polish on the first Saturday of the month at 6:00PM and on the third Sunday of the month at the 3:00PM Mass.
