Fr. Bob s Briefs Every once and a while, I will banter with a parishioner. The following is an example dialogue of such an exchange. Father, why don t you like the White Sox? asks a parishioner. Because Sox smell, I respond. Would you ever wear a Sox jersey? they ask. No, it would burn my skin. I respond. If I would buy a Sox jersey for you, would you wear it? a few have offered over the years. No. You would just be wasting your money because I would not wear it, I respond. The only proper baseball uniform in Chicago incorporates the colors of blue, white, and red. Such baseball items (jersey, shirts, and hats) I will adorn my personage, but nothing associated with a team connected to footwear and laundry will ever be worn by me. I am not a fan of the other baseball team in town. My heart bleeds Cubbie blue. I was, am, and will be a Cubs fan. Wearing Sox paraphernalia on the outside would betray my inner baseball affection and affiliation. It would be a phony and a fake. For me to wear Sox related gear would be duplicitous on my part. In the Gospel passage today, Jesus teaches the Twelve not to be duplicitous, or two sided people. After hearing the story from the Gospel of Mark, we may ask ourselves, here does Jesus say that in today s gospel? Jesus does not say it explicitly, but He does talk about not being two sided people. Notice, after commissioning the Twelve, he sends them out two by two into the surrounding towns and villages. Jesus gives them authority over unclean spirits and gives them the following instructions: take nothing except a staff; no bread, no bag, no money. They could wear sandals, but they were not to wear two tunics. Before going on further, we should stop here. Why would Jesus say this? What is the meaning behind the instruction not to wear two cloaks? The Church Fathers teach us that there is a deeper spiritual message behind our Lords words. Jesus is teaching the Twelve an important spiritual lesson. Commenting on this Gospel passage, the great St. Augustine writes that putting on two coats implies double-mindedness, a deception. The words say; and not to put on two coats. What counsel is conveyed to them by this? They ought to walk not in duplicity. Recall that Jesus is sending out the Twelve into the world to be His witnesses. Our Lord wishes for his disciples to always wear their Christian faith authentically and harmoniously. Jesus does not want us, His followers, to be duplicitous, or two sided people. I remember reading somewhere in one of the writings of the saints that it saddens our Lord saying, what good is it to receive Jesus on the tongue at Mass, when, after Mass, we use that same tongue to slander, gossip, and say hurtful words against another person? Such behavior is duplicitous. Is it not duplicitous to go to Mass on Sunday, but later, after Mass and during the week, to mistreat one s family, employees, employer, coworkers, classmates, and neighbors in word and action? Such behavior is duplicitous. Is it not duplicitous to smile on the outside in Church, while thinking uncharitably on the inside, or speaking uncharitably on the phone, email, text messages later? Jesus teaches His disciples not to wear two coats. As a Cubs fan, I would not wear Sox items. For me, wearing the other baseball team s paraphernalia would be false and duplicitous. In the same way, we, too, as Catholics, should not be duplicitous in our words and actions. If we call ourselves followers of Jesus, we should not act one way at one moment and then another way at another moment. That is wearing two coats at a time. Our Lord instructs us to be honest and authentic disciples, not to be two-sided people. Please pray for peace and God s protection from harm, and pray for all who protect and help us, such as policemen, firemen, and emergency assistance. May our Blessed Mother Mary, Undoer of Knots, help us with her maternal care and St. Joseph pray for us. Vivat Jesus! Live Jesus!

FORAN FUNERAL HOME IS STEPPIN OUT TO TAKE A WALK (TOUR) IN THE PARKS WEDNESDAY, JULY 29 The group will start the tour on the bus and hear all about Millennium Park and the new Maggie Daley Park. They will then have a little time to explore the parks and the attractions on their own. Afterwards, the group will enjoy lunch on the Lakefront at the Chicago Yacht Club. Then it s onto the bus for a detailed history of Grant Park and Millennium Park, along with the public art and statues of the Museum Campus. Informes del Padre Bob De vez en cuando, platico con algun feligrés. El siguiente es un ejemplo del diálogo de tal intercambio. "Padre, por qué no le gustan los Medias Blancas?", Pregunta un feligrés. "Debido al olor de los Medias Blancas", respondo. " Alguna vez se pondria la camiseta de los Medias?", Preguntan. "No, sería quemar mi piel." Yo respondo. "Si le compro una camiseta de los Medias, se la pondria?". Algunos pocos han ofrecido en los últimos años. "No. Sería malgastar su dinero, porque yo no lo usaría ", respondo. El único uniforme de béisbol adecuado en Chicago incorpora los colores azul, blanco y rojo. Note, después de la puesta de los Doce, los envía de dos en dos en las ciudades y pueblos de los alrededores. Jesús les da poder sobre los espíritus inmundos y les da las siguientes instrucciones: no lleven nada excepto un bastón; ni pan, ni alforja, ni dinero. Podrían usar sandalias, pero no deberian de usar dos capas. Antes de continuar debemos detenernos un poco aquí. Por qué Jesús dice esto? Cuál es el significado detrás de la instrucción de no usar dos capas? Los Padres de la Iglesia nos enseñan que hay un mensaje espiritual más profundo detrás de las palabras de Nuestro Señor. Jesús está enseñando a los Doce una importante lección espiritual. Al comentar sobre este pasaje del Evangelio, el gran San Agustín escribe que al ponerse dos capas implica doble mentalidad, un engaño. "Las palabras dicen; no ponerse dos capas. Qué consejo implica a ellos con esto? Tendrían de no caminar en duplicidad ". Recordemos que Jesús envía a los Doce en el mundo para ser sus testigos. Nuestro Señor quiere que sus discípulos siempre lleven su fe cristiana auténtica y armoniosamente. Jesús no quiere que nosotros, sus seguidores, seamos hipócritas, o falsos. Recuerdo haber leído en alguna parte de uno de los escritos de los santos que entristece a Nuestro Señor diciendo, que bien hace recibir a Jesús en la lengua en la Misa, cuando, después de la misa, se utiliza la misma lengua para la calumnia, el chisme, y decir palabras que causan daño otra persona? Tal comportamiento es engañoso. No es hipócrita ir a misa el domingo, pero más tarde, después de la misa y durante la semana, maltratar a la propia familia, empleados, empleadores, compañeros de trabajo, compañeros de clase y vecinos con palabras y acciónes? Tal comportamiento es engañoso. No es hipócrita de sonreír exteriormente en la iglesia, mientras que el pensamiento es poco caritativo interiormente, o hablar poco caritativo en los mensajes de teléfono, correo electrónico o mensajes de texto más tarde? Jesús enseña a sus discípulos a no usar dos capas. Como fanático de los Cachorros, yo no usaría artículos de los Medias Blancas. Para mí, el uso de la parafernalia del otro equipo de béisbol sería falso y engañoso. De la misma manera, también nosotros, como católicos, no deberíamos de ser hipócritas en nuestras palabras y acciones. Si nos llamamos seguidores de Jesús, no debemos actuar de una manera en un momento y luego de otra forma en otro momento. Ese es el uso de dos capas a la vez. Nuestro Señor nos enseña a ser discípulos honestos y auténticos, no a ser personas de dos caras. Por favor, oren por la paz y la protección de Dios de cualquier daño, y orar por todos los que protegen y nos ayudan, como policías, bomberos y asistencia de emergencia. Que nuestra Santísima Madre María, Desatadora de nudos, nos ayude con su cuidado maternal y San José ruega por nosotros. Vivat Jesús! Viva Jesús!
Z biurka Ks. Proboszcza Co jakiś czas, odbywam z parafianami rozmowy w rodzaju tej poniżej: Dlaczego Ksiądz nie lubi drużyny White Sox? pyta wierny. Bo Sox śmierdzą odpowiadam. Złożyłby Ksiądz sweter z logiem White Sox? Nie, bo mam uczulenie. Jeśli kupię Księdzu taki sweter, będzie go Ksiądz nosił? przez lata kilka razy składano mi taką propozycję. Nie, wyrzuci Pan tylko pieniądze w błoto. Nie założę czegoś takiego. Jedynie słuszny uniform drużyny baseballowej w Chicago ma barwy niebiesko-biało-czerwone. Z radością będę nosił swetry, koszulki i czapki w tych barwach. W życiu nie założę jednak niczego, co ma związek z drugą najpopularniejszą drużyną w mieście. Moje serce należy bowiem do Chicago Cubs, kibicuję im od zawsze. Nosząc rzeczy z logiem White Sox, czułbym, że zdradzam swoją prawdziwą baseballową miłość. Czułbym się jak oszust i kłamca. Noszenie rzeczy Sox byłoby w moim przypadku dwulicowe. W dzisiejszym fragmencie z Ewangelii według św. Marka, Jezus przestrzega Apostołów, aby nie byli fałszywi ani dwulicowi. Jezus wysyła Swoich uczniów w świat, aby o Nim świadczyli. Nasz Pan chcę, abyśmy wyznawali naszą chrześcijańską wiarę autentycznie i harmonijnie. Chrześcijanin nie może być dwulicowy. Pewien święty napisał kiedyś, iż taka postawa głęboko Boga zasmuca. Co z tego, że w czasie Mszy przyjmujemy Komunię Świętą do ust, jeśli potem tymi samymi ustami plotkujemy, szkalujemy i obrażamy innych? To dwulicowe zachowanie. Bywa, że chodzimy co niedzielę do kościoła, ale już w tygodniu, słowem lub czynem krzywdzimy rodzinę, przyjaciół, współpracowników i sąsiadów. Oszukujemy tak siebie i Pana. W kościele, na widoku, uśmiechamy się a tak naprawdę zżerają nas negatywne emocje względem pewnych osób. I tym emocjom dajemy potem upust w smsach, emailach czy telefonach. To się nazywa dwulicowość. Chrystus uczy, abyśmy nie nosili dwóch tunik. Jako że jestem zagorzałym kibicem Chicago Cubs, nigdy nie założyłbym niczego związanego z White Sox, gdyż okazałbym się osobą dwulicową. Podobnie my jako chrześcijanie nie możemy być dwulicowi w naszych słowach ani czynach. Jeżeli chcemy się nazywać uczniami Jezusa, nie możemy w jednej chwili zachowywać się tak, a już pięć minut później zupełnie inaczej. Na tym właśnie polega noszenie dwóch tunik jednocześnie. Wszechmogący nakazuje nam nie oszustwo, lecz autentyczność i szczerość. Módlmy się o pokój i ochronę przed złem tego świata. Pamiętajmy w modlitwie o wszystkich tych, którzy nam pomagają i nas chronią policjantach, strażakach, i tak dalej. Święta Maryjo Rozwiązująca Węzły, miej nas zawsze w Swojej opiece. Święty Józefie, módl się za nami. Vivat Jesus! Chwała Jezusowi!

Four Catechists Needed Love Teaching? Love talking about Jesus? We have the perfect job for you! Our Religious Educa on program is seeking four (4) catechists for the upcoming year. Current openings include 2 nd and 3 rd grades, along with 7 th and 8 th grades. Now is the me to consider being generous with your me, and passionate about your faith by sharing it with our students. Typically classes meet three (3) mes a month and the week off usually corresponds with a holiday. Classes meet Sunday mornings (September through the first week of May) from 8:30-9:25 and then all students and catechists a end the 9:30 a.m. Mass. Textbooks and the curriculum are based on 24 sessions and are divided accordingly. There are no teaching qualifica ons needed, but each catechist must a end a Virtus training session, and file an e-apps applica on for volunteers, if he or she has not already done so.
