Rather than gifts of gold, myrrh and frankincense the priest brings God s blessings to the household. During the priest s visit there is usually a crucifix placed in between two burning candles on the main table of the household. A prayer with the blessing of the home and those who live in it takes place. It is a chance for a priest to get to know his parishioners on a more personal basis in their homes rather than once a week in a church. All interested in cultivating this beautiful Polish tradition are asked to contact the Parish Office (314.421.5948) or Fr. Marek (pastor@ saintstan.org) to schedule such a pastoral visit. St. Stanislaus Kostka Christmas 2013 / January 2014 4 Dear Parishioners and Friends, The best kept secret of Christmas season is the feast of Epiphany, also known as Three Kings Sunday. In some places around the world, Epiphany is called "Little Christmas" and people exchange small gifts to mark the end of the Christmas season (you might want to do it - buy a small gift for your kids and say "Merry Epiphany!") In other places, as the end of the Christmas season, Epiphany also marks the day to take down the Christmas greenery. I like this idea for it allows me to leave my tree up way after Christmas and I can claim it's not from laziness; I am simply following tradition! In parts of Ireland, Epiphany is called "Women's Christmas" - to celebrate the honoring of Mary by the Magi; the husbands of Ireland do all the housework for the day. The story of the magi is found only in Matthew s Gospel, not in Mark, Luke, or John. It is familiar to us - probably too familiar, since we tend to read it through the lens of the hymn We Three Kings and the Nativity scenes our churches and families have set up during this Christmas season. Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar: three gold-crowned kings and their accompanying camels, lend an exotic touch to the more mundane sheep and shepherds, ox and donkey. But none of the details usually taken for granted is actually present in the scriptural text. The Greek word Magi, often translated Wise Men, more accurately means astrologers or astronomers, likely from Persia, who observed the star and calculated its trajectory. In fact, we know so little about those mysterious wisdom seekers that in December of 2008 the Archbishop of Canterbury, then the Most Reverend Doctor Rowan Williams, was quoted saying during a BBC interview, that the story of the three wise men is a legend. Even though I would probably use different words, I do not believe that the writer of the Gospel of Matthew intended his readers to take this story literally. I do believe however, that he did intend for us to take the story seriously. Very seriously indeed! For the writer is trying to express the wonder that was experienced by those who encountered Jesus of Nazareth; an experience so real, so amazing, so life transforming that only the language of parable could hope to capture even a hint of who Jesus was, is, and ever more shall be. I believe that the story of the magi s visit is best understood as a parable; and like all parables it is a story that captures a timeless and enduring truth about the human condition. Thus, while we accept the possibility that the visit of the magi might never have happened, we also believe that it is always happening. Just like the story of the Good Samaritan or the Prodigal Son, this story too is very real without necessary being historically accurate. This wonderful tale of three astrologers scouring the heavens for signs of new happenings on the planet captures the imagination of every generation. You see, we humans are meaning-making creatures eternally searching for the Mystery at the heart of the universe that dignifies and enchants our lives. Human beings just can t help trying to understand the meaning of it all. Like the wise men we are constantly trying to understand the how and the why of existence. At the very least, it seems to me that Matthew's take-home message is that God has had enough of the barriers which divide, and that God's passion is and always has been for the whole world, all of humankind. Matthew's artfully structured story makes great good sense when it is re-read/re-told in the light of the dramatic epilogue to his gospel, the so called Great Commission. In the Epiphany, cast as it is in the opening scenes of Matthew's Gospel, the infant Jesus is revealed to a select but representative group of outsiders; all nations have come to the light that God has focused in the pinpoint of one truly human life. When the curtain comes down, the risen Jesus turns this inside out with the command to go and make disciples of all nations. Whether or not there were three, four, or any number of Magi (Matthew's Greek plural); and no matter their assumed status as professional astrologers, interpreters of dreams, and masters of secret arts; whether they were high-born or self-made of peasant stock, the walls began to crumble. And woe to those who seek to re-build them a thread which runs through Matthew's telling to keep out those whom God is letting in. What became of these strange 'almost kings' after their privileged moment in the light and their dangerous audience with Herod? As it is typical with parables, with no apparent regard for a good ending, the storyteller simply sends them home but with the broadest hint that things are different now. The walls are down.... Fr. St. Stanislaus Kostka Boże Narodzenie 2013 / Styczeń 2014 5 Drodzy Parafianie i Przyjaciele, Uroczystość Epifanii, nazywane też świętem też Trzech Króli, od zawsze kryła się w cieniu obchodów Bożego Narodzenia. W niektórych krajach nazywa się ten dzień małym Bożym Narodzeniem i wymienia się przy tej okazji skromne podarunki, by w ten sposób zaznaczyć zakończenie okresu świątecznego (polecam mały eksperyment kup swojemy dziecku czy bliskiej osobie jakiś drobiazg i życz im Wesołej Epifanii! ) W wielu miejscach jest to dzień zdejmowania świątecznych dekoracji i pożegnania z choinką - co mi szczególnie przypada do gustu, bo mogę sobie pozwolić na dłuższe cieszenie się bożonarodzeniowym nastrojem, a na zarzuty lenistwa w sprzątaniu za wymówkę mam tradycję! W niektórych regionach Irlandii święto Epifanii określa się też mianem Damskiego Bożego Narodzenia w ten dzień bowiem na pamiątkę pokłonu magów przed młodziutką matką Jezusa, mężowie i synowie wykonują wszystkie prace domowe i kuchenne. Opowieść o mędrcach ze Wschodu odnajdujemy tylko w Ewangelii św. Mateusza Marek, Łukasz i Jan nie wspominają ani słowem a tym wydarzeniu. Wszyscy dobrze znamy tę historię, być może nawet znamy ją zbyt dobrze budując naszą wiedzę na podstawie pięknych kolęd czy też kolorowych figurek z kościelnych szopek. Kacper, Melchior i Baltazar: trzej królowie z wielbładami i w koronach dodają nieco egzotyki do tak powszednich postaci jakimi są pasterze czy czuwające przy żłóbku zwierzęta domowe. Okazuje się jednak, że żaden z tych tak nam znanych szczegółów nie ma podstaw w ewangelijnym tekście. Greckie słowo magowie tłumaczy się najczęściej jako mędrcy, mimo że oznacza ono ludzi studiujących astrologię i astronomię, najprawdodobniej z terenów Persji. Nasza wiedza na temat owych tajmniczych mędrców jest tak znikoma, że w 2008 roku Arcybiskup Cantebury (wówczas był nim Rowan Williams) powiedział w wywiadzie udzielonym BBC, że opowieść o trzech mędrcach jest legendą. Ja również nie uważam, by Mateusz chciał abyśmy czytali tę opowieść o mędrcach ze wschodu dosłownie choć nie wiem czy użyłbym w tym kontekście słowa legenda. Jestem za to przekonany, że Ewangelista chciał byśmy potraktowali tę opowieść na serio! Autor tej Ewangelii próbował bowiem przekazać za pomocą słów to, czego doświadczali spotykający Jezusa z Nazaretu było to doświadczenie niesamowite, odmieniające ludzkie życie w niezwykły sposób, tak że tylko język przypowieści mógł podjąć się próby przekazania choć odrobiny tego doświadczenia spotkania z Jezusem. Dlatego uważam też, że opowieść o spotkaniu mędrców z Jezusem zrozumiemy najlepiej jeśli przeczytamy ją i sprbujemy ją zrozumieć jako przypowieść. Tak jak wszystkie przypowieści próbuje ona przekazać nam ponadczasową prawdę o ludzkiej kondycji, prawdę wymykającą się czarno-białym definicjom. Intelektualna szczerość wymaga więc od nas dopuszczenie takiej możliwości, że żadni mędrcy ze Wschodu nigdy nie odwiedzili Dzieciątka Jezus, choć wiara inspirowaną tą przypowieścią karze nam wierzyć że ta opowieść odgrywa się w ludzkim życiu każdego dnia. Tak jak przypowieści o Dobrym Samarytaninie czy Marnotrawnym Synu, przypowieść o Mędrcach ze Wschodu jest jak najbardziej prawdziwa, mimo że nie musiała ona faktycznie się wydarzyć. Ta piękna opowieść o wpatrzonych w niebo mędrcach, podążających za nową i tajemniczą gwiazdą angażuje emocje i wyobraźnie kolejnych pokoleń. My ludzie, zawsze byliśmy, jesteśmy i będziemy istotami, które poszukują znaczenia i próbują zrozumieć tajemnice otaczającego nas świata. W naszej ludzkiej naturze leży nieustanne doszukiwanie się sensu i znaczenia otaczającej nas rzeczywistości. Jak ci magowie, próbujemy znaleźć dpowiedzi na egzystencjalne jak i dlaczego naszego życia. Pewnym minimum wypływającym z refleksji nad tą przypowieścią z Mateuszowej Ewangelii jest przesłanie o Bogu, która ma już dosyć murów i dzielących nas barier. Bóg tej przypowieści jest, i zawsze był, pasjonatem całego stworzonego świata, całej ludzkości. Ta mistrzowsko skomponowana opowieść nabiera jeszcze pełniejszego sensu gdy jest odczytywana, czy też opowiadana w kontekście epilogu tej samej Ewangelii, tzw. Wielkiego Rozesłania. Na początku swojej Ewangelii, w opowieści o Epifanii, Mateusz objawia Dzieciątko Jezus nie tylko wybranym spośród narodu wybranego, ale również poszukującym poganom z innych narodów, wszystkie narody przybyły ujrzeć Światłość Świata! Zaś na sam koniec Ewangelii, tuż przed opadnięciem kurtyny, zmartwychwstały Jezus odwraca role i każe swoim uczniom iść i nauczać wszystkie narody. Tak naprawdę nie ma więc znaczenia ilu było tych mędrców (grecki tekst używa liczby mnogiej), nie ma też znaczenia ich profesja zawodowych astrologów, odczytywaczy snów, mistrzów nauk tajemnych, nie ważne jest czy były to osoby szlachetnie urodzone, czy też wywodzące się z niższych wartsw - ważne jest to, że począwszy od Epifanii dzielące ludzkość mury zaczynają się kruszyć. Biada zaś tym którzy chcieliby te mury odbudowywać to biada głośno rozbrzmiewa przez calą Mateuszową Ewangelię biada tym, którzy chcą wyklucząć tych, których Bóg zaprosił do siebie. Jak potoczyły się losy owych nieomalże króli po ich zaszczytnym doświadczeniu Światłości Prawdziwej i po niebezpiecznej audiencji u Heroda? Jak w typowej przypowieści, autorowi nie zależy na robiącym wrażenie zakończeniu i mędrcy wracają do swojej krainy z przeczuciem że coś się odmieniło. Mury zaczęły się kruszyć... Ks. Marek Proboszcz

If you want to attend once and not come back that s fine. If you want to regularly participate that is also fine. The bottom line is that the path St. Stan s chooses will be decided by us parishioners. The focus of the committee is to gather information about a variety of choices we will have and to participate in conversations about those choices. Our next Discernment Committee meeting is on Sunday, January 12th at 12:15 p.m. Following are some concise answers to frequently asked questions. I have never hear about independent Catholics before! Are you telling me that there is more than one Catholic Church? NO! There is only one Catholic Church. However there are a fair number of Catholic denominations, of which the Roman Catholic Church is only one, of course overwhelmingly, the world s largest. There are, however, many other denominations that are equally Catholic, without being Roman. Similarly, there are many Lutheran denominations, even in this country; we all have heard about Missouri Synod Lutheran Church, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Wisconsin Synod Lutheran Church, etc. I thought a denomination was a separate religion? A denomination is an organization that is a group of people who gather to worship, pool funds, operate ministries, construct church buildings, establish nonprofit corporations, and do all the activities that people normally associate with the word Church including having similar religious or spiritual beliefs and practices. Catholic denominations in general follow the traditions of sacramental worship and the preaching of the word as established in the early church before the church was split up into many denominations. The actual theologies, rites, and practices of independent Catholic churches vary from conservative to liberal. It is important not to confuse matters of faith with matters of church practices and governance. The Pope is the head of the Roman Catholic Church. Who runs these independent denominations? Its own Bishops run each denomination. The Pope is a Bishop. The word bishop comes from the Greek for: Overseer. The Pope has been elected by his fellow bishops to be in effect the CEO of the Roman Catholic Church. There are variances but in general, the bishop of an independent Catholic church is elected by a synod or governing council of bishops to be the Patriarch, Matriarch, Presiding Bishop, the Archbishop, the Prime Bishop or leader of the denomination with a variety of titles. This person in general is considered the CEO of the denomination. Do independent Catholic Bishops have valid Apostolic succession? Apostolic succession is a process which involves a priest being consecrated to the High and Holy Order of Bishop by the laying on of hands and the anointing with sacred Oil of Chrism by a validly consecrated bishop. The consecrating bishop must be able to trace his/her succession through an unbroken line of bishops back to the original church founded by Jesus the Christ and his Apostles. As a general rule there must be two validly consecrated co-consecrators in participation with the main consecrating bishop to insure the validity of the consecration. Once a person becomes a priest or a bishop they are ordained spiritually for their entire life. Over the thousands of years of church history there have been validly consecrated bishops from Catholic denominations including the Roman Catholic Church who have broken their affiliation and allegiance to a particular denomination. These bishops and denominations have been called schismatic. Those bishops who have left a denomination are still valid bishops and may continue to ordain priests and consecrate new bishops, thus the valid Apostolic Succession is carried on. The major splits or schisms, from the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church (sometimes called the greater Catholic Church) founded 2000 years ago, were The Eastern Orthodox separation in 1054 and the Anglican community in 1534. There have been a few times in church history where the Church at Rome has given permission for a particular Diocese to elect its own bishops without being appointed by the Pope. Bishops, independent of Rome, have come about through both of these mechanisms. What about women priests, married priests, celibacy, birth control, abortion, divorce, etc.? Each independent Catholic denomination establishes their own Code of Canon Law, and their own theological stand on these issues. As previously stated the various denominations move from very conservative to very liberal. One would have to check with each church group to find out what their stance is on these matters. For this precise reason, we have been inviting bishops from various Catholic denominations and asking them very detailed questions. It is of utmost importance that we find a church family reflecting our own values!

We invite you all to meet with us on Friday, January 3rd at 6:00 p.m. at the parking lot of the Shrine. We will have supper together at the Shrine s restaurant and then we will enjoy the beautiful drive through the Way of Lights. Please contact Janice Merzweiler with any questions. January 4 & 5: Epiphany, blessing of the chalk During all Masses on Epiphany (Wise Magi) weekend we will bless small pieces of chalk. According to the Polish custom we encourage all Parishioners to mark the doors of their homes with that blessed chalk, signing them with C+M+B 2014 symbols. In doing so we ask God s protection and blessing upon those who live, work or visit throughout the coming year. It is also a visible sign that we have invited God s presence into our homes. January 5: Health Screening We are excited to announce the return of our very popular Health Screening ministry! Thanks to the generous parishioners willing to donate their time and skills, every first Sunday of the month, from 10:15 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. there will be two nurses (one English speaking, and one Polish) offering free blood sugar and blood pressure testing, as well as some invaluable healthy lifestyle advice. January 12: Discernment Committee Meeting All Parishioners are invited to attend next meeting of our Discernment Committee on Sunday, January 12th, at 12:15 p.m. in the rectory. The focus of the committee is to gather information about a variety of choices (different Catholic denominations) we have and to participate in conversations about those choices. January 20: Ecumenical MLK Celebration Every year on the third Monday of January we celebrate the life and achievements of a modern day prophet and martyr, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He was an important civil rights activist and a leader in the struggle to end racial segregation in the United States. His most famous address was the "I Have A Dream" speech. Dr. King was an advocate of non-violent protest and became the youngest man to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. He was assassinated in 1968. To honor his work and memory, on January 20th at 4:00 p.m., we will host an Ecumenical Martin Luther King Service with various religious and civil leaders from our city. In Poland it is sometimes called Fat Thursday, as it was celebrated the last Thursday before Lent - our last chance to dance and be merry before fast. The most desirable food on this day is pączki, a special kind of donut filled with fruit jelly. Fall 2014: Trip to Netherlands & England During Fr. Marek s visit in Utrecht in July this year, the Old Catholic Archbishop of Utrecht has extended an invitation to our Parishioners to International Old Catholic Congress from 18th to 21st of September 2014. Fr. Marek will be going and he is inviting others to join him! We are planning to combine this trip to Utrecht and Amsterdam with a visit to London, Canterbury, and the Shrine of Our Lady in Walsingham, England. We must sell 50 bricks in order to make the memorial/honor garden a reality this spring and summer. With the first 50 bricks sold we will be able to install the bricks with space for another 200 bricks, install benches, plants and bushes around the flag pole. Bricks sold after the first 50 will only help to beautify the garden with a flagstone pathway and additional plantings. Consider bricks not only for memorializing a person but also honoring a special person or occasion. Or just buy a brick with your name. Pick up your order form at the side entrance of the church. St. Stanislaus Kostka Christmas 2013 / January April - Kwiecień 2014 * Boże 2012 Narodzenie 2013 / Styczeń 2014 SAINT OF THE MONTH By universal consent, Thomas Aquinas is the preeminent spokesman of the Catholic tradition of reason and of divine revelation. He is one of the great teachers of the medieval Catholic Church, honored with the titles Doctor of the Church and Angelic Doctor. At five he was given to the Benedictine monastery at Monte Cassino in his parents hopes that he would choose that way of life and eventually became abbot. In 1239 he was sent to Naples to complete his studies. It was here that he was first attracted to philosophy of a pagan, Greek thinker Aristotle. By 1243, Thomas abandoned his family s plans for him and joined the Dominicans, much to his mother s dismay. On her order, Thomas was captured by his brother and kept at home for over a year. Once free, he went to Paris and then to Cologne, where he finished his studies with St. Albert the Great. He held two professorships at Paris, lived at the court of Pope Urban IV, directed the Dominican schools at Rome and Viterbo, combated adversaries and argued with Franciscan theologians about Aristotelianism. His greatest contribution to the Catholic Church is his writings. The unity, harmony and continuity of faith and reason, of revealed and natural human knowledge, pervades his writings. One might expect Thomas, as a man of the gospel, to be an ardent defender of revealed truth. But he was broad enough, deep enough, to see the whole natural order as coming from God the Creator, and to see reason as a divine gift to be highly cherished. We can look to Thomas Aquinas as a towering example of Catholicism in the sense of broadness, universality and inclusiveness. We should be determined anew to exercise the divine gift of reason in us, our power to learn from developing sciences in order to better understand God s will. The Summa Theologiae, his last and, unfortunately, uncompleted work, deals with the whole of Catholic theology. He stopped work on it after celebrating Mass on December 6, 1273. When asked why he stopped writing, he replied, I cannot go on... All that I have written seems to me like so much straw compared to what I have seen and what has been revealed to me. He died March 7, 1274. His feast day is celebrated on January 28. ŚWIĘTY MIESIĄCA Św. Tomasz z Akwinu jest powszechnie uznawany za najwybitniejszego teologa i cieszy się on rzadkim tytułem Doktora Kościoła. Jego szczególną zasługą było wypracowanie metody teologicznej, która równie mocno opiera się na logicznym rozumowaniu, co na Bożym Objawieniu. Gdy miał pięć lat, rodzice wysłali go na naukę w klaszteorze benedyktynów na Monte Cassino, licząc po cichu że w przyszłości ich syn zostanie tam opatem. W 1239 r. wysłano go na zakończenie studiów do Neapolu i tam właśnie zapoznał się on z naukami greckiego, pogańskiego filozofa Arystotelesa. W 1243 r. Tomasz dołączył się, wbrew woli swojej rodziny, do Dominikanów. Na rozkaz własnej matki, został on później porwany i przez rok więziono go w rodzinnym domu. Po odzyskaniu wolności Tomasz udał się do Paryża i Kolonii, gdzie kontynuował naukę pod okiem Św. Alberta Wielkiego. Z czasem stał się słynnym profesorem w Paryżu, Rzymie oraz Viterbo, przez jakiś czas służył na dworze papieża Urbana IV. Zdarzało mu się też zmagać z franciszkańskimi teologami, którzy odrzucali filozofię arytstotelowską. Jego największym darem dla Kościoła są bez wątpienia dzieła teologiczne w których Św. Tomasz balansuje wiarę oraz rozum tak, że nazajem się uzupełniają i wspomagają. Wbrew ówczesnym oczekiwaniom, by jako duchowny bronić tzw. czystości wiary Tomasz był teologiem na tyle otwartym by postrzegać nauki oraz świat cały świat stworzony jako pochodzące od Boga, i co za tym idzie, pomocne w Jego poznawaniu. Dzięki takiemu podejściu jest on jednym z najlepszych przykładów prawdziwego znaczenia katolicyzmu, czyli chrześcijaństwa uniwersalnego, otwartego. Za jego przykładem powinniśmy z odwagą używać rozumu i zdobyczy nauk, by w ich świetle coraz lepiej poznawać Bożą wolę. Summa Teologiczna, jego największe i ostatnie dzieło, jest próba usystematyzowania całości teologii katolickiej. Św. Tomasz zaprzestał jednak pisania 6 grudnia 1273 r. Zapytany dlaczego nie kontynuuje swojej pracy odpowiedział Nie mogę tak dłużej... Wszystko co napisałem jest jak słoma w porównaniu z tym co mi właśnie zostało objawione. Tomasz z Akwinu umarł wkrótce potem, 7 marca 1274 r. Jego wspomnienie obchodzi się 28 stycznia.
