PAGE 2 THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER APRIL 19, 2015 Gluten update I have been informed that, at another parish, gluten-free hosts are kept in a little container that is attached to the ciborium (that s the fancy Church word for the cup or bowl that holds the hosts to be consecrated at Mass). That way, the host does not come into contact with the regular Communion hosts. As the Communicant approaches the priest at Communion time, he or she simply says gluten-free. I will check into this. In the meantime, if someone needs a gluten-free host, please let the Communion Ministers or me know before Mass. ********** The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has released the annual statistical data for the current priesthood ordination class (called the Class of 2015). A survey of the 505 men who will be ordained to the priesthood this year was conducted, with 411 or 69% responding to this survey. Of those who responded, 317 will be ordained for 120 different (arch)dioceses and 94 are from religious communities. The survey found that 7 out of 10 were encouraged to become a priest by their parish priest. Others who encouraged them were friends (46%), parishioners (45%) and mothers (40%). That last one kind of surprises me, since I grew up in a home and in an era where, at one time or another, just about every Catholic boy thought about becoming a priest and received encouragement from the parents. Times have changed. Other findings: Average age 34 69% report their race as Caucasian/European American/ white; 10% Asian or Pacific Islander; 14% Hispanic/Latino; and 5% African/American/black. One quarter (25%) reported being born outside the U.S., with the largest numbers coming from Colombia, Mexico, the Philippines, Nigeria, Poland and Viet Nam. On average, those born outside the U.S. have been in this country for 12 years. And this is quite interesting: for the last ten years, between 20 and 30 percent of those being ordained to the diocesan priesthood have been born outside the U.S. Over 26% of those ordained carried educational debt at the time they entered the seminary, averaging a debt of a little over $22,500.00. Speaking of new priests: Jacob (Jake) Martin will be ordained to the priesthood on Saturday, June 13 and will celebrate his First Mass here on Sunday, June 14 at 11:00 A.M. Jake is a Jesuit and he promised to help out here during the summer. Pray for him.

PAGE 3 THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER APRIL 19, 2015 FIRST READING: ACTS OF THE APOSTLES 3:13-15, 17-19 Peter said to the people: The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified his servant Jesus, whom you handed over and denied in Pilate s presence when he had decided to release him. You denied the Holy and Righteous One and asked that a murderer be released to you. The author of life you put to death, but God raised him from the dead; of this we are witnesses. Now I know, brothers, that you acted out of ignorance, just as your leaders did; but God has thus brought to fulfillment what he had announced beforehand through the mouth of all the prophets, that his Christ would suffer. Repent, therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be wiped away. SECOND READING: 1 JOHN 2:1-5A My children, I am writing this to you so that you may not commit sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous one. He is expiation for our sins, and not for our sins only but for those of the whole world. The way we may be sure that we know him is to keep his commandments. Those who say, I know him, but do not keep his commandments are liars, and the truth is not in them. But whoever keeps his word, the love of God is truly perfected in him. READINGS FOR THIS WEEKEND GOSPEL: LUKE 24:35-48 The two disciples recounted what had taken place on the way, and how Jesus was made known to them in the breaking of bread. While they were still speaking about this, he stood in their midst and said to them, Peace be with you. But they were startled and terrified and thought that they were seeing a ghost. Then he said to them, Why are you troubled? And why do questions arise in your hearts? Look at my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me and see, because a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you can see I have. And as he said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. While they were still incredulous for joy and were amazed, he asked them, Have you anything here to eat? They gave him a piece of baked fish; he took it and ate it in front of them. He said to them, These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the law of Moses and in the prophets and psalms must be fulfilled. Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures. And he said to them, Thus it is written that the Christ would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day and that repentance, for the forgiveness of sins, would be preached in his name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things.

PAGE 4 THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER APRIL 19, 2015 ADORATION of the BLESSED SACRAMENT Come visit Jesus in the Chapel this Monday from: 12:00 Noon to 8:00 p.m. Benediction will be at 7:45 p.m. Prayer before the Blessed Sacrament is nothing less than a close, private, conversation with a living person who is the risen Jesus Christ in the Eucharist. It is about as close as we can come in this life to talking with God face to face. You are very important to the Lord. Come spend some special time with Him. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION With the Easter season well under way, we now resume our survey of the sacrament of the sick. The pastoral care of the sick will be misunderstood if we start from the vantage point of the sickroom. Begin with the Sunday assembly, from which the sick person has been separated by the crisis of illness, and whose absence is given expression in prayer and service. The goal is to extend the consolation of the Lord s presence at the table to those who are apart from it, and for the assembly to enfold them in prayer. Secondarily, the goal is to teach people what the Church desires for all those who are sick. Seeing ministers dispatched to the sick from Mass every Sunday might help a caregiver realize that their dear one can also receive Communion. Witnessing the anointing of a woman facing surgery might help another person to overcome hesitation and ask for the sacrament s healing and strength. Society s impulse may be to marginalize the sick, but the tradition of our community is to see them at the center of our life. When Roman persecutors ordered St. Lawrence the Deacon to hand over the jewels of the church, he assembled a motley crew of the sick and the infirm and announced with all humility, Behold, my lord, the treasures of the church of Christ. PAGE 6 THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER APRIL 19, 2015 I am the Bread of Life. John 6 Third Week of Easter On the Third Sunday of Easter, Luke's Gospel has the very human story of Jesus' appearing to the disciples after the Resurrection, inviting them to touch his hands and feet to see that he is real. He ate with them and he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures. Saturday is the Feast of Saint Mark, Evangelist. In our first readings from Acts of the Apostles this week, we read of one of the earliest martyrs, Stephen and of Philip converting an Ethiopian slave along the road. Also this week is the story of Saul, persecutor of Christians being blinded and then healed by Ananias in the name of Jesus. The week ends with Peter traveling the region and healing. The gospel for this week is from Chapter 6 of John's Gospel on Jesus as the Bread of Life. Like so many stories in this gospel, Jesus teaches from one layer of understanding to another, taking us deeper into understanding his gift of himself to us in the Eucharist. Jesus says, Do not work for food that perishes but for the food that endures for eternal life. The bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world. I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst. I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my Flesh for the life of the world. Whoever eats my Flesh and drinks my Blood remains in me and I in him. This marvelous dialogue ends with this exchange with his disciples: Jesus then said to the Twelve, 'Do you also want to leave?' Simon Peter answered him, 'Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God.' For the Fourth Sunday of Easter we reflect on the Paschal Mystery more deeply. Psalm 118 says, The stone which the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. Peter quotes this psalm in preaching that the crippled man was healed, In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazorean whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead. In John's Gospel, Jesus tells us, A good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. Taken from the "Weekly Guide for Daily Prayer" on the Creighton University's Online Ministries web site: http://www.creighton.edu/collaborativeministry/online.html Used with permission. Daily Prayer This Week This can be a very good week to grow in a sense of and practice the notion of being a "contemplative in the midst of action." We have practically a whole week of gospels about Jesus' gift of himself to us as the "Bread of Life." This gives us the opportunity to let that mystery be in the background of our consciousness every day this week, as we go about our everyday tasks. What makes it "contemplative is that we will be asking for graces each morning, and we will let our desires and our activities interact. We can begin reflecting upon how often we work for food that perishes. The pay-off, the success, the accomplishment, the reward we receive for what we do is often quite passing and unsatisfying. It would be important to be able to sense anything that appears to be food that doesn't last and name it as such this week. The real food, the life-giving nourishment that our Lord offers us is himself. If we can't celebrate the Eucharist daily this week, we can make what we used to call a spiritual communion simply by opening our hearts and desiring to receive our Lord, so that he remains in us and we remain in him. We can practice consciously choosing union with Jesus, our Risen Lord and only Savior, and experiencing how that would affect the choices we need to make throughout our day. If we begin each day, asking for the grace of this union, and renew the desire at brief moments we have at various times in the day, our focus and attention begins to change. We will experience a peace and a gifted lack of hunger and thirst for so many of the things that draw us away from him, from loving, from mercy, from consciousness on those in need. If the background focus of each day this week is to desire to be fed by a closeness with my Lord, it doesn't matter how busy I am, or how many conflicts I have to face or what suffering I or my loved ones must endure. His flesh and blood are real food and drink because they are the real sacrifice that takes away the power of sin and death itself. United with his surrender to the Father, we are set free from whatever can take away the life he gained for us. For this gift, for this faith, we can give thanks for every night, as we review our union with our Lord each night.

PROTECT THEM AS THEY PROTECT US. BLESS THEM FOR THE SELFLESS ACTS THEY PERFORM FOR US. AMEN Hi! I hope everyone had a good week. We are finally in Spring weather, not too hot, not too cold (and that s the way I like it!) Let us enjoy this very pleasant time of year. Last Sunday was Divine Mercy Sunday and Janet & I attended the service at Church and I am glad we did. There was a wonderful crowd and it was a great experience to gather for prayer in this setting. We hope this will become a tradition here at St. Fabian s. I would like to mention something that means so very much to me. This past Friday, April 17th was the 9th Anniversary of the weekly Adoration Chapel. I am so thankful and pleased with all the people that support it. Without you it wouldn t exist. Jesus is always available, but He needs all of us to come and visit Him and be there for the next person to arrive. So I pray for each and everyone of you who make it possible, because I really believe HE wants it to continue for a good long time. Remember ~ Mondays, 12:00 Noon to 8:00 p.m. are Holy Hours because of HIM. In our Gospel from Luke this week, it is a beautiful story of the two disciples recounting about all that had happened and how Jesus was made known to them in the breaking of bread. Tell me, do we recognize Him in the Breaking of the Bread? It takes prayer, attention and a willing spirit to be open to know Him. I feel if we keep those three things in mind each and everyday, we can t miss but to come closer to Jesus. The more we pray, receive communion, treat others kindly and be a friend to those around us, He will bless us and we will have peace that we are doing the right thing. Jesus stood in the disciples midst and said Peace be with you and offered it freely to them, all they had to do was believe in Him that He truly did rise from the grave. That s what He asks of us. Do we believe? Walk with King Jesus and be a blessing, Deacon Charlie Thought for the Week: Only as we follow Christ can we lead others in the right direction.

PAGE 12 THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER APRIL 19, 2015 CZYTANIA NA NIEDZIELÊ PIERWSZE CZYTANIE Dz 3,13-15.17-19 Bóg naszych ojców wskrzesi³ Jezusa Czytanie z Dziejów Apostolskich Piotr powiedzia³ do ludu: Bóg naszych ojców, Bóg Abrahama, Izaaka i Jakuba, ws³awi³ S³ugê swego, Jezusa, wy jednak wydaliœcie Go i zaparliœcie siê Go przed Pi³atem, gdy postanowi³ Go uwolniæ. Zaparliœcie siê œwiêtego i sprawiedliwego, a wyprosiliœcie u³askawienie dla zabójcy. Zabiliœcie Dawcê ycia, ale Bóg wskrzesi³ Go z martwych, czego my jesteœmy œwiadkami. Pokutujcie wiêc i nawróæcie siê, aby grzechy wasze zosta³y zg³adzone. Oto S³owo Bo e. PSALM RESPONSORYJNY: Ps 4,2.4-9 Wznieœ ponad nami œwiat³oœæ Twoj¹, Panie. Kiedy Ciê wzywam, odpowiedz mi, Bo e, który wymierzasz mi sprawiedliwoœæ. Tyœ mnie wydÿwign¹³ z utrapienia, zmi³uj siê nade mn¹ i wys³uchaj moj¹ modlitwê. Wiedzcie, e godnym podziwu czyni Pan swego wiernego, Pan mnie wys³ucha, gdy bêdê Go wzywa³. Oto S³owo Bo e. ŒPIEW PRZED EWANGELI : Por. k 24,32 Alleluja, Alleluja, Alleluja Panie Jezu, daj nam zrozumieæ Pisma, niech pa³a nasze serce, gdy do nas mówisz. A gdy rozmawiali o tym, On sam stan¹³ poœród nich i rzek³ do nich: Pokój wam. Zatrwo onym i wylêk³ym zdawa³o siê, e widz¹ ducha. Lecz On rzek³ do nich: Czemu jesteœcie zmieszani i dlaczego w¹tpliwoœci budz¹ siê w waszych sercach? Lecz gdy oni z radoœci jeszcze nie wierzyli i pe³ni byli zdumienia, rzek³ do nich: Macie tu coœ do jedzenia? Oni podali Mu kawa³ek pieczonej ryby. Wzi¹³ i jad³ wobec nich. Potem rzek³ do nich: To w³aœnie znaczy³y s³owa, które mówi³em do was, gdy by³em jeszcze z wami: Musi siê wype³niæ wszystko, co napisane jest o Mnie w Prawie Moj esza, u Proroków i w Psalmach. Wtedy oœwieci³ ich umys³, aby rozumieli Pisma. I rzek³ do nich: Tak jest napisane: Mesjasz bêdzie cierpia³ i trzeciego dnia zmartwychwstanie; w imiê Jego g³oszone bêdzie nawrócenie i odpuszczenie grzechów wszystkim narodom, pocz¹wszy od Jerozolimy. Wy jesteœcie œwiadkami tego. Oto s³owo Pañskie.
