PENTECOST SUNDAY MAY 24, 2015 HAPPY SOLEMNITY OF PENTECOST! (the 50 th day after Easter and the official end of the Easter season) This is the day to celebrate, not only our differences, but especially our unity in the Holy Spirit. God has touched each of us in a most special way and filled us with the gift of the Spirit. Filled with this Spirit, we begin to realize that we, all of us, are a gift, a special gift of God to our world, and we are given the grace we need to share those gifts as we minister to each other. This is a day to celebrate what we have in common and then to celebrate our differences, the unique person each one of us is. As we read in 1 Corinthians, Chapter 12: There are different gifts, but the same Spirit. Some of us are organizers; others are dreamers; still others are listeners; and there are many followers. But we are all filled with the same Spirit. There are different ministries, but the same Lord. Not all of us are preachers. Some of us are readers; some are musicians and singers; some prepare the sanctuary for the celebration of the Mass; still others are gift bearers; some join in prayer. Whatever ministry we are called to share, we all serve the same Lord, Jesus Christ, and we all breathe the same Spirit. There are different works, but the same God who accomplishes all of them in everyone. Some people cook; some clean; some sew; some garden; some are comfortable with computers and some are not. All the work we do, whatever it may be, is inspired by the same Holy Spirit who fires us with the energy and grace we need to accomplish our work. On this Solemnity of Pentecost, the finale of the Easter season, filled with the Spirit of God, may we recognize our unity, our differences, our strengths, our gifts, as we continue to work together for the good of our parish community and the larger community as well. Each of us has something MUCH to contribute for the good of all! ********** After last Saturday s Senior Moment at the 5:00 P.M. Mass, this e-mail came: Brains of older people are slow because they know so much. People do not decline mentally with age. Scientists say it just takes them longer to recall facts because they have more information in their brains. Much like a computer struggles as the hard drive gets full, so, too, do humans take longer to access information when their brains are full. To put it another way, the brains of older people do not get weak they just know more. Also, older people often go to another room to get something and when they get there, they stand there, wondering what they came for. They go back to where they started and remember what they wanted. This is not a memory problem it is nature s way of making older people do more exercise. PENTECOST SUNDAY MAY 24, 2015 READINGS FOR THIS WEEKEND FIRST READING: ACTS OF THE APOSTLES 2:1-11 When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one place together. And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven staying in Jerusalem. At this sound, they gathered in a large crowd, but they were confused because each one heard them speaking in his own language. They were astounded, and in amazement they asked, Are not all these people who are speaking Galileans? Then how does each of us hear them in his native language? We are Parthians, Medes, and Elamites, inhabitants of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the districts of Libya near Cyrene, as well as travelers from Rome, both Jews and converts to Judaism, Cretans and Arabs, yet we hear them speaking in our own tongues of the mighty acts of God. SECOND READING: 1 CORINTHIANS 12:3B-7, 12-13 Brothers and sisters: No one can say, Jesus is Lord, except by the Holy Spirit. There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit; there are different forms of service but the same Lord; there are different workings but the same God who produces all of them in everyone. To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit. As a body is one though it has many parts, and all the parts of the body, though many, are one body, so also Christ. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, slaves or free persons, and we were all given to drink of one Spirit. GOSPEL: JOHN 20:19-23 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked, where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, Peace be with you. When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you. And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.

PENTECOST SUNDAY MAY 24, 2015 ADORATION of the BLESSED SACRAMENT The Adoration Chapel will be closed this Monday, May 25th for the Memorial Day Holiday. We wish each and everyone a very safe and enjoyable holiday. May we always remember what Memorial Day is all about. We have Freedom in so many areas of our lives, because of our ARMED FORCES. Our country is FREE because of what they did for us, and still are doing! GOD BLESS TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Marriage is ideally a parish event today, but in the first three centuries of the church s history, it was a household celebration guided by civil law and pagan customs. Changes happened quickly after the Peace of Constantine in 312, and the fresh air after long persecution brought some creativity. The speech that the father of the groom s family gave before dinner or the veiling or crowning of the bride (or even the spouse s arrival at the honeymoon suite) attracted a prayer of blessing. With amazing rapidity, worship was propelled out of the intimate setting of house churches to large public gathering spaces, and some parts of the marriage ceremony began to migrate with the growing community to the new spaces. In Rome, the veiling of the bride with the customary daily headgear of a married woman became the central liturgical act, accompanied by a biblical prayer for her integrity and fruitfulness. There were no vows as such (just as there are no vows to this day in the Orthodox marriage rite). In the liturgy, after hearing John s Gospel account of the wedding at Cana, the bride was veiled and blessed, and the priest gave the kiss of peace to the husband, who then gave it to his bride. PENTECOST SUNDAY MAY 24, 2015 J esus said to him, What do you want me to do for you? The blind man replied, Master, I want to see. Jesus told him, Go your way; your faith has saved you. ~Mark 10 Eighth Week of Ordinary Time Sunday is the great feast of Pentecost - the birthday of the Church. The formerly frightened Apostles are on fire. Now they can speak clearly, so everyone can understand them. Jesus gives his peace to his disciples and breathes his Spirit upon them, giving them the mission to forgive and sending them to carry out his desire that we all be one. Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth. The return to Ordinary Time doesn't mean we forget about the good news of the Resurrection or the gift of the Spirit Jesus promised us. It simply means that we return to a season of reflecting upon the scriptures with numbers (ordinal) until Advent begins on November 29. Tuesday is the Memorial of Saint Philip Neri, Priest. The first readings this week are from Sirach, with their beautiful seeking of Wisdom. During the week, Mark's Gospel offers us stories about sacrificing part of ourselves. We hear of the Rich Young Man: Go, sell what you have, and give to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me. At that statement, his face fell, and he went away sad, for he had many possessions. Peter tells Jesus, We have given up everything and followed you. Jesus responds, there is no one who has given up house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands for my sake and for the sake of the Gospel who will not receive a hundred times more. When the disciples squabble over who will sit in glory with Jesus, he tells them, the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many. Bartimaeus, a blind man recognizes Jesus as Son of David, is healed and follows Jesus. As Jesus turns over the sellers' tables in the temple, the religious authorities look for a way to put him to death. When they try to entrap him with their questions, Jesus asks them about John the Baptist's baptism. They refuse to answer and Jesus says, Neither shall I tell you by what authority I do these things. Next week is Trinity Sunday which always follows Pentecost. It celebrates the un-knowable relationship between the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit - and their loving support for us in our lives. I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now. But when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth. Daily Prayer This Week: This week we can find a lot of encouragement in the Pentecost readings. The disciples, this most human group of Jesus' followers, have opened their hearts to the Holy Spirit and found new courage. They shed their fears and boldly began doing what they longed to do - spread the good news. We, too, can find that courage in our lives. The same joyous strength that opened their hearts can touch ours in ways we can hardly imagine. We only have to ask! As we go through our week, in the smallest moments of the day, we can beg God for the strength of the Holy Spirit in our lives. As we awaken in the morning, sort laundry or do the dishes, we can change our attitudes toward these chores and see them as sacred moments of invitation from the God who loves us with such fire and compassion. Dear Lord, you know how filled I am with fears. Let each moment of anxiety today be a reminder to open my life, my heart and my soul to the love and courage you offer me. I know that if only I could trust in you more, it would change my life. "He went away sad, for he had many possessions!" Let me turn these apprehensions over to you. I beg you to give me the wisdom and strength I need to trust more and to fear less. Teach me that it's OK to stop clinging to the fears I have known for so long and that I can embrace the freedom you offer me. Let me be less fear-ful and more generous. We can find the courage to proclaim the good news as the disciples did at Pentecost, simply by asking God for that strength and then living as if we received it. It is not about the amount of time, but about an awareness of God's presence in our lives. Believing and trusting in that love and grace, we can find the humility to say, "I'm sorry" to someone we have hurt. We can take a moment to write a note or an e-mail telling a suffering friend we are praying for them. And all day long, as we run our errands or sit at our desks, we can take a moment to say "Thank you" to the God on whom we have such an utter dependence and who loves us with such abandon.

It is the day the Spirit was given to the disciples, thus they were born in the Spirit. A very special day in Christianity. The peace of the Spirit is with us always, it s up to us to keep it active and well. In our Gospel from John this week, Jesus gives the power to His disciples to forgive sin. (Now that is powerful!) We should always hold our priests up in prayer for the gift they have received from Jesus to forgive sins. I personally thank God for all our priests, may they be true to their vocation and never stop trusting in the Lord Jesus. He is the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End. I don t think we realize the pressure a priest can be under hearing everyone s sins. Could we handle something like that, especially in serious matters?
