March 21, 2004 Fourth Sunday of Lent Page Three Communal Reconciliation Liturgy On Tuesday of Holy Week, April 6th, our parish will celebrate the sacrament of Reconciliation in a communal liturgy appropriate to the season of Lent. The celebration will begin at 7:00 PM in the Church. We especially hope all those who have been prevented by fear from coming to confession, those away from the sacraments for a long time, those who have felt alienated from the Church or the parish, will participate in this celebration of God s loving mercy. All will be asked to acknowledge their sinfulness before God and the gathered community, to seek mercy, and to receive the Church s absolution. Please pray that through this celebration many will be brought home, released from the burden of sin and guilt, and begin healing in Christ. Confessions are also heard every Saturday from 8:45-9:30 AM, and on April 3rd from 3:00-4:30 PM. An Italian confessor will be available on April 3rd also from 3-4:30 PM for those who would like to go to Confession in Italian. Our Financial Support of St. Ferdinand Parish Sunday, March 13-14, 2004: Envelopes: $ 9,353.76 Loose Cash: $ 3,233.27 TOTAL DONATIONS: $12,587.03 Amount over/(under) weekly budget: ($2,412.97) The increased support that we received during the first and second Sundays of Lent, even with second collections each of these weekends, dropped off considerably last week when we had only our usual offertory collection in support of the parish. Lent typically is a time of increased participation here at St. Ferdinand s, and a time of increased generosity. However, over this past year we have now marked a staggering 45 consecutive weeks that we have fallen below our weekly offertory goal. The season of Lent is an opportunity for conversion. It should not only be a time of prayer and fasting, but also almsgiving. Giving up things is one way of self-sacrifice, but an opportunity to do more for others, the less fortunate and your parish Church are also elements of our Lenten disciplines. If you have been lax in your support of the Church, Lent is an appropriate time to improve your commitment. Thank you for your support of St. Ferdinand Parish. Daniel P. Please, just as you call the rectory to ask that your loved ones names be placed on the sick list for our prayers, let us know when they have recovered sufficiently to be taken off. We may then say a prayer of thanksgiving for their speedy recovery. For anyone suffering a chronic illness, there is no limit to the length of time you may be on this list. We will continue to pray for you as long as you wish. As members of the parish faith community, it is our responsibility to remember both in concrete and spiritual ways those who cannot celebrate with us each week because they are ill. Those who are sick in turn, remember all of us daily in their prayers and in their sufferings. We experience many blessings because of their remembering us. They truly helped us walk by faith through their prayerful demeanor. May their work inspire us to continue our Lenten promises. We look forward to next year s journey. Not an actual place, like Halsted Street, or State Street or any other Street with a name. My Street isn t a concrete strip in Chicago, it s another world right next to yours. People speak of the poor, they talk about the homeless, like they were some great faceless mass out there. Take it from me, we all have names, faces, stories. I am one of them and they are part of me. I am a man, a woman, I am young and I am old, but most tragically of all I am a child. Whatever or whoever I am, the Street doesn t care. The Street is the great equalizer. I am African-American, I am Hispanic, I belonged to white, prosperous families of the middle class. I am a believing Catholic, Protestant, Jew, Hindu, Muslim or I believe in nothing at all. The Street does that to you. Faith tells us that we were created as beautiful, free people in the image of God. If that s true, why do I sleep in doorways and under bridges? Why do I have to beg and sometimes find my food in garbage cans on LaSalle Street? Why is this here? Port Ministries is, I guess you can say, more than a soup kitchen or a shelter. It is an idea, It is a vision that really came about because one man wanted to help a lot of people and didn t give up. Father Gus Milon, OFM, a Franciscan friar, came to the south side of Chicago in 1985 with nothing more than a few friends, a few dollars and a dream to feed the poor, clothe the naked, shelter the orphans and be a friend to those that life has just passed by. It wasn t easy, and it didn t happen fast. Father Gus took on the Street and, for the first time, the Street backed off. He won because he fought it with hope and prayer. First there was the soup kitchen, an old abandoned restaurant at 5058 South Ashland Avenue. Tough turf. Gang turf. But they came. First day The Port opened its doors Father Gus didn t know where the food or the money would come from. By that afternoon, food had somehow arrived to feed everybody. It took a lot of work, a lot of sweat, but there was food for all. It is a place of hope... People respond when something is real. Port Ministries is real because every day they don t just post their Mission Statement. They live it. At Port Ministries they don t preach, they don t convert, they don t try to save you from the Street. They fill the basic needs of human beings. I m given food, clothes, a shower and a bed for the night. There s a free clinic if I m hurting, with licensed doctors who give examinations and make referrals. If I have a family, we can stay together under one roof in safety and comfort. If I want, I can get counseling for everything from financial management to education to job placement. At Port Ministries, I am offered everything I need to survive and slowly work my way to a point of stability and self-sufficiency. I don t give up my free will or choice, though. I receive with dignity. Faith is all around you at Port Ministries, the Spirit is alive everywhere, in the face of every volunteer and guest who enters the door. It s not preached at you in words, it s shown by the actions of the heart. Please be generous this Lent, that by our sacrifice the Port Ministries may benefit.

Ilana DeBare is the author or Where Girls Come First: The Rise, Fall, and Surprising Revival of Girls Schools, the first comprehensive history of all-girl schools in the United States. DeBare is a longtime newspaper reporter who most recently covered workplace issues for the San Francisco Chronicle. Before that, she covered local government, state politics, and business at the Sacramento Bee, where she wrote prize-winning series on NAFTA and on women in the computer industry. DeBare received her B.A. from Harvard College and a master s degree in journalism from the University of California at Berkeley. She is the founding board president of the Julia Morgan School for Girls, a new all-girl middle school that opened in 1999 in Oakland, California. Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is known as the Silent Killer, because very often it causes no signs or symptoms to warn the individual of its presence. Periodic blood pressure tests can be a quick way to detect a serious health problem and prevent a stroke. The screenings will take place every fourth Friday of the month from 9 AM until 11 AM at the Life Center. This month, the blood pressure screening will take place on Friday, March 26, 2004.
