CHOIR We are fortunate enough to have a Parish Choir that has a full multi-lingual repertoire, as well as a Junior Choir. The Choir rehearses on Thursday at 7:30 PM, and the Junior Choir on Thursday at 6:30 PM. Instrumentalists are welcomed, either to play solo or with our choir. A parish orchestra made up of children and adults rehearses and performs several times during the year. For more information, or to volunteer, please call John or Martha Nowik after Mass or at the Parish Office. PARISH REGISTRATION New parishioners are most welcome and are encouraged to call the parish office and make an appointment to register. TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME First Reading: Exodus 32:7-11, 13-14 God became very angry with the Israelites for worshiping a molten calf and making sacrifices to it. The people had so quickly violated his commandments that he planned to destroy them. But Moses pleaded with God for mercy and God relented. Second Reading: 1 Timothy 1:12-17 Paul considered himself a former blasphemer and persecutor, and expressed his gratitude for the mercy Jesus showed him. Paul felt that he was a perfect example of Jesus' patience toward sinners and his desire to reconcile them with God. Gospel: Luke 15:1-32 The Pharisees grew angry because of the Jesus' compassion toward sinners. In response, Jesus tells of a son who squandered his inheritance, then returned to his father and asked to be treated as a hired hand. The father rejoiced, angering his older and more obedient son. The father explained that everything he owned belonged to his older son; but he had to rejoice for the son who was lost and had been found.

Natomiast cierpliwość Boga jest grubą liną, trzymającą mocno. Nie jest ona namiastką Jego miłości, lecz stanem jej największego napięcia. Bóg zawsze jest gotów, aby podtrzymać, gdy upadamy, aby nas wziąć w ramiona, gdy wracamy z obczyzny. Czy widzimy się w roli syna marnotrawnego, czy w roli jego starszego brata, uczciwego i porządnego - nie ma większego znaczenia. Różnica między nimi nie jest tak duża. Stanisława Kostki patrona naszej parafii. Urodził się w Rostkowie w 1550 r. Jako 14-letni chłopiec udał się z bratem Pawłem do Wiednia. Bliski śmierci, doznał uzdrowienia za przyczyną Matki Bożej, od której otrzymał polecenie wstąpienia do jezuitów. Podejmował próby wstąpienia ale przeszkadzał mu jego młody wiek. Uciekł wiec do Dyligi, gdzie prowincjał przyjął go do wspólnoty na próbę. W Rzymie został przyjęty do nowicjatu, a na początku 1568 roku złożył śluby zakonne. Zmarł 15 sierpnia 1568. Jest on jednym z najpopularnieszych świętych polskich, patronem młodzieży. Od niedawna w Polsce przeniesiono obchodzenie jego święta z listopada na wrzesień, aby Stanisław towarzyszył jako parton dziatwie szkolnej rozpoczynającej nowy rok nauki. ANNE SOCIETY WORD The St. Anne Society will hold their first meeting of the new season on Tuesday evening, September 27 th at in the Parish Center. This first meeting is an important one and we ask all to make an effort to attend. Anyone interested in becoming a member of the Society is invited to this meeting. WORSHIP RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Re-registration and registration should have been completed by now. If you have not done so, please do so as soon as possible so we will be properly prepared for the beginning of classes. The first session will be on Wednesday evening, September 14 th at. Children will gather in the Church and meet with their teachers and be taken to their classes. Pick-up is in Church at 7:40PM. You must come into Church and claim your child---you can t just sit in your car and wait for them to come out alone. For safety reasons, no child will be free to leave the Church without a parent or adult present. As we look ahead to our new session, we could use a little help on Wednesday evenings for Religious Education, Sunday Chapel for our youngest, or Liturgy of the word on Sundays. If anyone is interested in being part of the program as a class helper, teacher, monitor, or help with office work, please contact Linda at the office and you can discuss what you feel you might like to help with. CHAPEL CATECHIST MEETING There will be a short meeting and the opportunity to pick up folders for the Chapel Catechist teachers after the 9:30 Mass on this Sunday, September 11 th. LITURGY OF THE WORD FOLDER PICK-UP On this Sunday, September 11, either before or after the 9:30 Mass, the Liturgy of the Word teachers can pick-up their folders in the open area of the Church. ROSARY SOCIETY NEWS Rosary Society Mass is this Sunday, September 11th at 9:30 and there will be a business meeting following Mass. Social Tea On Rosary Sunday, September 11 th there will be a Social Tea for members and any women of the Parish interested in information or becoming a member of the Society. This will follow the 9:30 Mass and will be in the Parish Center. Communion Breakfast The Annual Communion Breakfast will be on Sunday, October 2 nd after the 9:30 Mass. The Communion Breakfast will be at Giovanna s Restaurant on South Ave. The tickets will be the same as last year, $25. Our guest speaker will be Mrs. Susan Choma who opened the Year of Mercy with us last year and so she will close it with us this year! So save the date. OUR LADY OF THE ROSARY MAKERS The first meeting of the season will be on Monday evening, September 19 th at in the Parish Center. Anyone interested in becoming a member is welcome to attend. The ladies make rosaries for nursing homes, the missions, and plan projects for the religious education students for the celebration of Our Lady of the Rosary. The beading is accompanied by socializing and light refreshment and four additional sessions have been added! CHOIR After a well-deserved rest, the Choir will once again resume singing at the 9:30 Sunday Mass on this Sunday, September 11 th. THE CHOIR WHY NOT BECOME A MEMBER We are especially in need of more basses! The next rehearsal will be on Thursday, September 15 th in Church JUNIOR CHOIR There will be a meeting of those who wish to be members of the Junior Choir and their parents on Wednesday, September 21 st at 7:45PM, following Religious Education. This will be an informational meeting and not a rehearsal. The first rehearsal for the junior Choir will be on Wednesday evening September 28 th following Religious Education. INSTRUMENTALISTS Students or adults, rusty amateur or seasoned pro, whether you play the trumpet or trombone, flute or clarinet or a stringed instrument, we can use your talents! SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION The Sacrament of Reconciliation is available on a regular basis on Saturdays at 5 PM and on Sunday mornings after the 8, 9:30, and 11 o clock Masses as well as after weekday Masses simply by requesting the celebration of the Sacrament. READERS AND EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS There will be a meeting of all Readers on Monday evening, September 12 th at 7PM in the Church. There will be a meeting of all Eucharistic Ministers on Tuesday evening, September 20 th at 7PM in the Church. If you do not attend the meeting or be in touch with me, I will understand that to mean that you no longer wish to continue in this Ministry. Attendance is important. MORNING OF MERCY mini pilgrimage On Saturday, September 24 th from 9:30am to 12:30pm, the Parish of Divine Mercy, 232 Central Ave., Rahway, will host a morning including prayer, confession and a presentation by Msgr. Joe Reilly, the Archdiocese Missionary of Mercy. By attending a plenary indulgence is granted that is a full pardon from sin and all its effects.

We will have a bus leaving from our parking lot and CCM Michael Dias, USAF the cost will be $25. The Parish will subsidize the Nicholas Hogan, USN remaining cost of this Pilgrimage. PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY The Prayer Shawl Ministry is continuing their work and will meet on Wednesday, September 28 th at 10:30AM in the Parish Center. Anyone interested in learning to knit or crochet or to join the group is welcome to attend. The group will be reading a book, The Shop on Blossom Street by Debbie Macomber. It is about a little yarn store in Seattle called A Good Yarn should be interesting. We will talk about the book at our October 26th meeting. EMMAUS BOOK CLUB Two books have been chosen for Monday evening, September 26 th at 7PM. The Marriage of Opposites and The Language of Flowers. The first refers to opposites in gender, race, class and religion in the culture of St. Thomas in the 1800 s. The other is a portrait of a woman whose gift for helping others through the flowers she chooses for them enables her to overcome her own troubled past. KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS Installation of Officers On Tuesday evening, September 13 th at 8PM there will be the installation of officers for the Knights and will be followed by fellowship. All are invited to attend. CAREGIVER SUPPORT GROUP The Caregiver s Support Group is a group for those caring for elderly or chronically ill loved ones and they meet at St. Helen s in Westfield on the first non-holiday Monday of each month at 7:30PM. The date is set for Tuesday, November 15 th so you are welcome to call the office and make your reservation for a fun-filled evening. YOUTH Chapel and Liturgy of the word begins on Sunday, September 25 th after the 9:30 Mass and in Polish after the 11AM Polish Mass. GET-A-GRIP: Get-A-Grip will meet on this Sunday, September 11th at the 9:30 Mass. Students in the 7 th grade through high school are all encouraged to attend. The young folks who attend the 11AM Mass in Polish also are invited to attend on the same date at their Mass, they meet with Fr. Frank. SERVICE STEWARDSHIP Everything I have is yours. Our Heavenly Father gives us everything, including the chance to share in His eternal Kingdom. Yet, like the Prodigal Son we are often lured away by the materialism of our society. Do we really want to turn our backs on all that God offers in exchange for a material wealth that has no lasting value? FINANCE Faith Giving for St. Bernard and St. Stanislaus 126 envelopes were used Sunday and contained $4,513 which means 85% of the collection came from envelopes. There are 465 registered families who receive envelopes which means 339 families did not use envelopes. We encourage anyone with knowledge of an act of sexual misconduct to inform us so that we may take appropriate action to protect others and provide support to victims of sexual abuse. Call the Archdiocesan Office of Child and Youth Protection at 201-407-3256. St. Luke dedicates an entire Chapter of his Gospel to the theme of forgiveness. This is a key emphasis running throughout the entire Gospel. He is convinced that anyone who is willing to repent of his or her sins can be assured of God s forgiveness. He presented three parables to make his point. Each one deals with lost and found. The sheep and the coin. These two parables are short. The first deals with a shepherd who loses one sheep out of 100 and hunts it down until he finds it. The second parable tells us of a woman who loses one of ten coins and sweeps the entire house until she finds it. Both the shepherd and the woman rejoice at finding what was lost. Luke interprets both parables from the perspective of the lost sheep and the lost coin. For him, these represent sinners. His teaching is that there is more joy in heaven and among the angels over one sinner who repents than of many who do not. No Christian believer would argue with his teaching. However, is that exactly what Jesus taught? Neither the sheep nor the coin repent. In fact, both the shepherd and the woman are depicted as extremely assertive in finding what was lost. No real shepherd would ever do that nor would any ordinary person sweep a whole house to find a penny. Jesus seems to focus on the shepherd and the woman as metaphors for God. This is how much God loves us. God s love for us appears extreme, and repentance is not a requirement! A father and two lost sons. This third parable uses the same dynamic as the previous ones. The younger son squanders his inheritance and brings monumental shame upon himself and his family. He should have been shunned by his father for life. When the young son returns home, not because of repentance but out of desperation, the father treats him like royalty with no questions asked. Again, no repentance and an extreme father. The elder-son syndrome. The elder son is just as lost as the younger one but will not admit it. He hates how the younger son has been accepted back, but he will not accept for himself that same graciousness from his father. Again, the father requires no repentance and continues to treat the elder son with extreme love. Could God be this extreme with His love? Jesus says yes. Jesus teaching is even more radical than St. Luke s is. His point is clearly that God s forgiveness is unconditional regardless of what our situation in life may be. In the love of God, Fr. Frank
