4 Dear Parishioners and Friends, Drodzy Parafianie i Przyjaciele, The truth about the Holy Spirit developed slowly. In its development, there was no shortage of errors. The Holy Spirit was not explained properly un l the Council of Nicaea (325) and the Council of Constan nople (381), sta ng that the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father and the Son and with the Father and the Son He is worshiped and glorified. We disregard here the dispute by the Church of the East (filioque - according to which the Holy Spirit proceeds only from the Father). St. Athanasius says that through the Holy Spirit God became the carrier of flesh so that man could become the bearer of the Spirit. The Holy Spirit is our Sanc fier. It is He who makes the grace of God or Christ Himself reside within us. It was through Him that Jesus was conceived in Mary's womb. It is He who also "opened" so to speak our hearts and souls to Christ. Jesus penetrates, heals and transforms us, through the power of the Holy Spirit. Theology says that not only our soul is sanc fied by the Holy Spirit but also our body, hence the Mass for healing is always directed toward the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit also sanc fies, in other words consecrates the offerings: the bread and wine that become the body and blood of the Lord (the prayer to Him for the gi of sanc fica on is called epiclesis). The Holy Spirit is a bond of love, rela onship and unity. It is He who unites the Father and the Son - in Him they are One. The Holy Spirit also unites us, therefore - note - almost every liturgical prayer ends with the invoca on: In unity with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit precedes our thoughts, words, and brings a new light to our being, He opens our mind to the truth of God, and revives our desire for good, helping us pray, and finally He gives us seven gi s: wisdom, understanding, counsel, for tude, knowledge, fear of God and piety. St. Paul speaks of the fruits of the Holy Spirit: "love, joy, peace, pa- ence, goodness, kindness, faithfulness, gentleness, selfcontrol" (Gal 5:22). So the man who opens up to the Holy Spirit simply becomes holy, happier, and more mature. The church also teaches us about the so-called cosmic duty of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit shapes the social order in an interna onal context, He has built peace and created our global community. Note that John Paul II was aware of this when he spoke in Warsaw's Victory Square in 1979 "Let your Spirit descend and renew the face of the earth... the earth". We know that the Holy Father's words 36 years ago were prophe c. Poland has a unique way for reforms and transforma ons. Let the cry of the holy Pope John Paul II will s ll be relevant today, let the Holy Spirit also renew our beloved America, which seems to be slow to get up from crisis. God Bless! Prawda o Duchu Świętym kształtowała się powoli. W jej powstawaniu nie brakowało błędów. Wyjaśnił je dopiero Sobór Nicejski (325) i Sobór Konstantynopolitański I (381), stwierdzając, że Duch Święty od Ojca i Syna pochodzi oraz z Ojcem i Synem odpiera uwielbienie i chwałę. Pomijamy tu kwes ę sporu z Kościołem Wschodu (filioque wg którego Duch Święty pochodzi tylko od Ojca). Św. Atanazy stwierdza, że dzięki Duchowi Świętemu Bóg stał się nosicielem ciała, aby człowiek mógł stać się nosicielem Ducha. Duch Święty jest Uświęcicielem. To on sprawia, że łaska Boża czyli sam Chrystus w nas zamieszkuje. To On sprawił, że Jezus począł się w łonie Maryi. To On również otwiera niejako nasze serca i dusze na Chrystusa. Jezus przenika nas i przemienia, uzdrawia właśnie mocą Ducha Świętego. Teologia mówi, że dzięki Duchowi Świętemu uświęcona zostaje nie tylko nasza dusza, ale i ciało, stąd Msze o uzdrowienie w niektórych ruchach charyzmatycznych są zawsze skierowane ku Duchowi Świętemu. Duch Święty również uświęca, inaczej mówiąc konsekruje dary ofiarne: chleb i wino, które stają się Ciałem i Krwią Pańską (modlitwa do Niego o ten dar uświęcenia to epikleza). Duch Święty jest więzią miłości, relacją jedności. To On jednoczy Ojca z Synem w Nim stanowią Jedno. Również nas Duch Święty jednoczy, stąd zauważmy każda prawie modlitwa liturgiczna kończy się wezwaniem: w jedności Ducha Świętego. Duch Święty swoim tchnieniem uprzedza nasze myśli, słowa, daje nowe światło, otwiera umysł na przyjęcie prawdy Bożej, ożywia w nas pragnienie dobra, pomaga nam się modlić, wreszcie obdarza nas siedmioma darami: mądrością, rozumem, radą, męstwem, umiejętnością, bojaźnią Bożą i pobożnością. Św. Paweł mówi z kolei o owocach Ducha, którymi są: miłość, radość, pokój, cierpliwość, dobroć, uprzejmość, wierność, łagodność, opanowanie (Ga 5,22). A zatem człowiek, który otwiera się na działanie Ducha Świętego po prostu staje się święty, szczęśliwszy, dojrzalszy. Kościół naucza również o tzw. kosmicznym działaniu Ducha Świętego. To Duch Święty kształtuje porządek społeczny w aspekcie międzynarodowym, buduje pokój i tworzy społeczności typu naród. Zauważmy, że miał tego świadomość Jan Paweł II, który w Warszawie na Placu Zwycięstwa wołał w 1979 r. Niech zstąpi Duch Twój i odnowi oblicze ziemi... tej ziemi. Wiemy, że te słowa Ojca Świętego sprzed 36 lat były prorocze. Polska przeszła wyjątkową drogę reform i przemian. Niech wołanie świętego Papieża Jana Pawła II będzie wciąż aktualne i dziś, niech zstąpi i na nas Duch Święty! Niech również odnowi naszą kochaną Amerykę, która jakby wciąż nie może podnieść się z kryzysu. Do zobaczenia w sobotę, 30 maja, na Mszy św. o godz. 4:30 po południu, kiedy będziemy celebrować 25-ą rocznicę święceń diakonatu Diakona Jim Schiltz. Polecam jego, jego żonę Connie i ich rodzinę waszym modlitwom. Szczęść Boże!

5 P arish Transforma on con nues as we focus on our various ini a ves under the major building blocks of Catechesis, Communio (a profound sense of community), and Missionary Spirit. Our recent focus has been on our new Hospitality Ministry--which fits under the Communio building block specifically--and since we kick off this Ministry at all of the Masses this weekend, you may already have seen it in ac on. Perhaps you even volunteered! Here, the goal is to provide a more welcoming presence to old friends and new faces alike as our new Ministers [at least one (but no more than two) at each of the five entrances into the church] greet and welcome people to weekend Mass. Ministers are asked to arrive at least fi een minutes before the scheduled Mass, get a Ministry of Hospitality badge from the ushers room, then greet people at one of the entrances. In an cipa on of the approaching 100-year anniversary of St. Constance Parish, you are invited to purchase from the "Tree of Life" a leaf on which you can place the names of your loved ones: parents, siblings, rela ves, friends, parishioners, priests, nuns, etc. Both the living and the dead can be named, so that their memory will last forever. You can have your own name on a leaf or choose to name your family. Proceeds from this project will be used for repairs of the church parking area and parish buildings. There are both large and small leaves on the "Tree of Life". For the engraving and moun ng of each small leaf, the dona on is $250.00, while for each large leaf it is $400.00. The number of leaves is limited and there may not be enough for everyone. Please visit the rectory office to complete all necessary transac ons.

Reynolds (john@jrwrites.com) I remember thinking when I was a kid that the Holy Spirit got the short end of the s ck in the whole Trinity thing. God the Father is God the Father, a er all, and Jesus changed water into wine and calmed the stormy seas and took the nails for us in keeping with the great plan of salva- on. But the Holy Spirit? Or if you have a few years behind you--as I do--the Holy Ghost? Kind of a shadowy character, the Spirit. But I mean that in only good ways. When commissioning his friends in Ma hew s Gospel, Jesus directs them to make disciples of all na- ons, bap zing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Nice. But, it doesn t tell us anything about this Spirit en ty. Jesus speaking in the Evangelist John s Gospel clarifies be er for me the Spirit s essence. He does so mul ple mes, in fact. At the Last Supper, Jesus tells his disciples, The Advocate, the Holy Spirit that the Father will send in my name he will teach you everything and remind you of all that I told you. In today s Gospel, Jesus tells his friends a li le more, saying, When the Advocate comes whom I will send you from the Father, the Spirit of truth that proceeds from the Father, he will tes fy to me. And then Jesus speaks a third me to his disciples about the Spirit, this me just before going to the garden: I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now. But when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth I m no Scripture scholar, but perhaps even the Scripture scholars have trouble when it comes to the Spirit. He will teach you everything. He will tes fy to me. When he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth... The Spirit certainly sounds like a person. But does he exactly define the Spirit as a person, even though we recognize him as the third person of the Trinity? Listen to Peter in Acts as he quotes the prophet Joel: It will come to pass in the last days, God says, that I will pour out a por on of my spirit upon all flesh. Your sons and daughters shall prophesy, your young men shall see visions, your old men shall dream dreams Here the Spirit sounds less like a person and more like a force. The breath of God, perhaps? The Spirit is o en represented by images of fire. When we have passion for something, we are said to be on fire, just like the disciples hearts were burning within them as Jesus spoke to them on the way to Emmaus. And in today s first reading, we hear of the Spirit coming to the disciples: Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim. Older (and wiser?) now, I don t think the Spirit gets the short end of the s ck anymore. He doesn t in my book, anyway. I m a total fan. I have come to set the earth on fire, Jesus says about halfway through Luke s Gospel, and how I wish it were already blazing! Veni, Sancte Spiritus. Come, bring us your fire.

PONIEDZIAŁEK, 25 MAJA DZIEŃ PAMIĘCI NARODOWEJ (MEMORIAL DAY) Tradycja obchodów Memorial Day - Dnia Pamięci Narodowej w Stanach Zjednoczonych Ameryki, zrodziła się tuż po wojnie secesyjnej (Civil War 1861-65), w której armia Unii, czyli północnych Stanów, walczyła z Konfederatami z Południa. Początkowo święto nazywano Decora on Day, jako że najpopularniejszą formą honorowania pamięci poległych żołnierzy było ozdabianie kwiatami ich grobów. Jest głęboko ludzką potrzebą zachowanie we wdzięcznej pamięci wszystkich, którzy zginęli dla swego kraju i rodaków w walce, w imię ideałów wolności i niepodległości. Ta pamięć to część historii przekazywana z pokolenia na pokolenie, to zbiorowa świadomość tożsamości narodowej. W końcu XIX w. święto było już powszechnie znane pod nową nazwą - Memorial Day. Po I wojnie światowej obchody objęły również poległych wówczas żołnierzy, a następnie żołnierzy wszystkich wojen, w których uczestniczyły Stany Zjednoczone. Weddings The Archdiocese of Chicago requires arrangements for weddings be made four months in advance. We at St. Constance strongly recommend at least six months before the date of marriage. Chrzty w języku angielskim są w pierwszą i trzecią niedzielę, a w języku polskim w drugą i czwartą niedzielę każdego miesiąca. Rodzice są zobowiązani do wzięcia udziału w spotkaniu przygotowującym do tego sakramentu przed planowaną datą chrztu dziecka. Prosimy o skontaktowanie się z biurem parafialnym, aby zgłosić dziecko do chrztu. Sakrament Małżeństwa Archidiecezja Chicago zaleca, aby osoby, które planują zawarcie sakramentu małżeństwa zgłosiły się do biura parafialnego co najmniej cztery miesiące przed datą ślubu. Chcielibyśmy i usilnie zalecamy, aby w naszej parafii okres przygotowania trwać sześć miesięcy. Prosimy, abyście najpierw ustalili termin w kościele, a następnie w innych miejscach.
