Dear Friends in Christ: Last Sunday, our parish was honored to be visited by Archbishop Zygmunt Zimowski, the Delegate of the Polish Catholic Conference of Bishops for the Pastoral Care of Migrants Poles. Just two weeks ago, on April 18, 2009 Pope Benedict XVI appointed Bishop Zimowski as the President of Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Health Care Workers and at the same time raised him to the dignity of Archbishop. From now on he will be residing in Vatican. Archbishop Zimowski worked at the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith from 1983 to 2002 when it was headed by Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict. On Sunday, April 26 Archbishop Zimowski presided at the Mass during which he dedicated the Divine Mercy altar in our church. We are very grateful for his prayers and dedication of this new place of worship in our church, where, in a special way, we will be able to venerate the Divine Mercy image and the relics of St. Faustina which are located beneath the Image. The relic was received from the Sisters of Mercy in Lagiewniki, Poland. Throughout its history and until today, the Catholic Church has affirmed the usefulness and appropriateness of venerating relics of the saints. Relics remind us of the holiness of a saint and his cooperation in God's work. At the same time relics inspire us to ask for the prayers of that saint and to beg the grace of God to live the same kind of faith-filled life. For the believer relics allow them to go beyond the visible world and to touch into the invisible, eternal world. The faithfully departed, and proclaimed saints by the Church, are no longer dead. Through the veneration of relics, they are still alive. God's work was done through the lives of these holy men. The good work they did continue after their death. People are drawn closer to God through the lives of these holy men. Their mortal remains inspire others to draw closer even after their deaths. As we venerate their remains, these saints intercede for asking God and his Son Jesus to send us mystical assistance through the Holy Spirit. I deeply encourage you to pray to Merciful God through the intercession of St. Faustina. Through the worship of Divine Mercy, we provide living witness to the modern world how essential faith is and how significant and critical God is in the life of His people. Sometimes we feel lost within the paths of our daily life, but the image of Divine Mercy redirects us towards God s grace. Here, in a very special way you can come into contact with the power of God s merciful love. Many of you might already encountered the God s grace and love by being able to come to confession after being away for many years. Whether it was to come out of addiction or to unite again with a family, this sacrament unites us with Trinitarian love. Throughout the day there are many people who like to stop inside our church to pray for a moment, but there are some who come at night to pray outside the church in front of the illuminated image. I am very grateful to our own Faustinum Association members for leading us in prayers every Friday morning and evening. Thank you and for being such great apostles of Divine Mercy within our community. Members of our Boy Scout Troop 51 kicked off another exciting season of outdoor camping over the past weekend. They spent a couple nights at Camp Alphonse, one of the few remaining camping facilities remaining in the Forest Preserve District of Cook County, just north of Palatine, IL. There, the boys spent their time hiking along the designated trails, exploring the forest as it is awakening to the spring season. Birds were singing, frogs were croaking, trees were budding, and the sun was raising high into the sky; ah, the simple pleasures of this Godgiven earth. They also participated in a variety of activities that encouraged team spirit and further promoted camaraderie. Despite the rain that arrived early Sunday morning, overall the weekend was a great start to what is to surely be another phenomenal year of camping. Drodzy Przyjaciele w Chrystusie: W ostatnią niedzielę gościliśmy w naszej parafii ks. abp Zygmunta Zimowskiego, delegata Episkopatu Polski d/s duszpasterstwa emigracji polonijnej i od 18 kwietnia Przewodniczącego Papieskiej Rady ds. Duszpasterstwa Służby Zdrowia w Watykanie. Ks. Arcybiskup przewodniczył Mszy św. podczas, której poświęcił w naszym kościele ołtarz Miłosierdzia Bożego. Ks. abp był wieloletnim współpracownikiem Ojca Św. Benedykta przed jego wyborem na Stolicę Piotrową kiedy pełnił funkcję Prefekta Kongregacji Doktryny Wiary. Jesteśmy ogromnie wdzięczni ks. abp Zimowskiemu za modlitwę oraz poświęcenie tego nowego miejsca kultu w naszym kościele, w którym w sposób szczególny czczony jest obraz Miłosierdzia Bożego i Jego Apostaołka św. Faustyna, której relikwie są umieszczone pod obrazem. Relikwie otrzymaliśmy od sióstr z Sanktuarium Miłosierdzia Bożego w Łagiewnikach. Kościół zachęca nas do oddawania czci relikwiom świętych. Kult relikwii stanowi jeden z głównych przejawów pobożności chrześcijańskiej. Człowiekowi wierzącemu relikwie pozwalają przekroczyć próg świata widzialnego, dotknąć wiecznego. Zmarły, ogłoszony przez Kościół za świętego, przestaje być umarłym. W swoich relikwiach żyje on nadal. Zostaje włączony w osobiste życie zwykłego człowieka, który oczekuje od niego wstawiennictwa, pośrednictwa czy jakiejkolwiek pomocy, doczesnej i nadprzyrodzonej. Zachęcam was zatem do modlitwy za wstawienictwem św. Faustyny do Miłosiernego Jezusa. Poprzez praktykowanie kultu Bożego Miłosierdzia, pokazujemy współczesnemu światu jak ważna jest wiara, jak ważny jest Bóg w życiu, aby się nie pogubić na drogach codzienności. A jeżeli komuś się to przydarzy, to jakże ważną rolę odgrywa, dla niejednej zagubionej duszy ten kościół, a w nim czczony obraz Miłosierdzia Bożego. W tym miejscu w sposób szczególny można doświadczać mocy Boga, a zarazem Jego miłości. Wiele osób już doświadczyło tutaj tej miłości miłosiernej Boga poprzez pojednanie się w sakramencie spowiedzi św. po wielu latach, odwrócenie się od nałogu, złączenie rozbitej rodziny. Wiele osób nie tylko w ciągu dnia przychodzi do naszej świątyni, aby się modlić, ale także w nocy można spotkać osoby modlące się na zewnątrz kościoła przed oświetlonym obrazem. Wdzięczny jestem grupie modlitewnej Faustinum, za prowadzenie modlitwy w każdy piątek rano i wieczorem oraz rozwijanie kultu miłosierdzia Bożego w naszej wspólnocie. May 3, 2009 Fourth Sunday of Easter Page Thirteen ON DEAD SHEEP, SHEEP POETRY, MOVIE SHEEP, AND THE GOOD SHEPHERD Copyright 2009 by John B. Reynolds (john@jrwrites.com) When I think of sheep, a few things always enter my mind. First is the bloated sheep I saw nearly half a century ago-- really--out at Spring Lake, an undeveloped tract of land where I often went exploring as a kid back in Streator, IL. I was romping around the place when I came across this big old dead sheep that was blown up tight and taut like a like fuzzy balloon. I can t remember if it smelled, but it probably did. I can t remember if flies were buzzing around it, but they probably were. I just remember that huge, lifeless, inflated sheep lying there in the springtime sun, and if I haven t forgotten it over the course of these past many decades, I don t suppose I ever will. Next I think of a guy named Bob. I have no idea what he s doing now, but in high school we had an English class together. Bob was one of the smart kids--at least that s how I saw him-- and for one of our assignments, he came up with a sheep poem. I can t remember if he wrote it himself or if he found it somewhere. I just remember that even though it was about sheep, it wasn t really about sheep. It was about people who act like sheep, who are easily led by the ways of the world. The poem portrayed sheep as stupid with no minds of their own, blindly following somebody else s lead, and that s, I guess, how Bob saw the masses of American society. Maybe even his classmates. Next I think of Babe. You know. The movie about the talking pig who wants to be a sheepdog. I put this in my top ten list because of Babe s unwavering persistence, because of Babe s unwillingness to take no for an answer. If Babe were a movie about a kid who wanted to play football for Notre Dame, it would be called Rudy. But I also like Babe because of its portrayal of the other animals on the farm, especially the sheep. Here--unlike the animals in Bob s sheep poem--they are intelligent, willful animals that refuse to be bullied (or led) by a pig chasing a dream, especially when the pig is arrogant and mean in its initial approach. With understanding, however, the sheep come around, choosing to follow by their own free will. And on Good Shepherd Sunday, I think of the sheep--the flock- -in today s Gospel when Jesus tells us, I am the good shepherd, and I know mine, and mine know me I count myself as a sheep in that flock. And yet, sheep still have that go along image--bob s image--and I have trouble with it. Maybe I m wrong, but I don t think that many individuals would take it as a compliment to be referred to as sheep. But when I look at it closer, I see that discipleship (or flockship, in this context), is not sheeplike at all as Bob positioned it. It s easy to follow the crowd in today s society, to subscribe to the populist view of things, to go along. But that s not the sheep we are called to be. We are called to be sheep with fight, following our shepherd against the populist view of the world on long and difficult journey home. This is the sheep I want to be, and per the sheep in Babe, to your flock be true.
