August 3, 2014 18th Ordinary Sunday Page Four A PRECIOUS GIFT The Eucharist is Jesus gift to us and the fulfillment of his promise to be with us always. It s central to God s saving plan of love. Many Catholics seem to take the gift of Sunday Mass for granted and choose to be absent from Mass. In the early Church, Christians didn t enjoy the freedom of religion that we in the United States do today. They faced persecution by Roman authorities for attending Mass. The convenience and legality of Mass today shouldn t cause us to lose sight of how precious it is. Catholics around the world brave great inconvenience and persecution to receive what we may take for granted. Pope John Paul II recalled living under religious oppression and situations of faith triumphing over persecution. Mother Teresa of Calcutta instructed new priests to celebrate each Mass as if it is your first, your last, and your only Mass. Let us anticipate and participate in each Mass as if it could be our last or only Mass. Let us never take for granted this encounter with God each Sunday. The graces and transformative insights God provides in each celebration of Mass help us move toward happier, holier lives. As we prepare for Mass, we can pray confidently that Christ will give us sanctifying grace. When we arrive, we can ask God to speak to us through the readings, music, homily, and prayers, and show us how to become the persons we re created to be. We can then pray about how to put our new insights into practice in the upcoming week. Cardinal Seán O Malley of Boston GRACE IS EVERYWHERE Grace is everywhere. People of faith act on this belief. As Christians we are called to reach deeply into ourselves and find God's presence there. We are called to reach outside ourselves and find God there, too. The reality of grace has sustained and nourished people beyond numbering. The church never tires of telling the story of the loaves and fishes. It is narrated no less than six times in the four Gospels. We imagine the hesitant apostles reaching into the baskets and finding bread, always more bread. We anticipate the ending. The apostles will wear out before the bread runs out. At another time and place, Isaiah also spoke of an abundance, this time of water, sweet honey, and rich milk. Always, always God is a gift giver, and we the receivers. Our response is doxology, or praise. In the second reading Paul provides the words and attitude. Praise is everywhere. Copyright (c) J. S. Kurtz, D.D., President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, has sent a letter to all Bishops in the U.S. urging them to ask the Catholic faithful to "pray for peace and to support diplomatic efforts aimed at dialogue and reconciliation". He asks for our prayers regarding violence in the Middle East, Ukraine, Africa and Central America.

Page Nine 18th Ordinary Sunday August 3, 2014 ND News Flash August is right around the corner, and we are preparing to kick off the athletic season here at ND. The Lady Panthers showed a great deal of dedication and good sportsmanship last season, and we are looking forward to an equally successful athletic season. This season for fall sports, we have added Cross Country. Mr. Durst and Mr. Hernandez are thrilled to introduce this new, competitive sport. In order to prepare for meets against others teams, the team will be practicing and conditioning prior to the official competitions. Continuing this year as a fall sport is Volleyball. We are looking forward to another spirited season! The Lady Panthers are always looking for new faces to join the team. If you are interested in joining either of our teams this fall, please join Mrs. Ward and the coaches in the school gym beginning on August 13 and 14 from 3:15 4:45PM. Historia jest zapomniana, a warto by o niej wiedzieć. W 1980 roku, w czasie solidarnościowego entuzjazmu z inicjatywy Mariana Pyzla powstał Społeczny Komitet Budowy Pomnika Powstania Warszawskiego. W pracach komitetu uczestniczyli m.in. gen. bryg. Jan Mazurkiewicz Radosław, Bohdan Tomaszewski i Aleksander Gieysztor. Komitet zebrał znaczną sumę pieniędzy, oraz złom, który miał być wykorzystany do budowy pomnika. Rozpisany konkurs wygrał w 1983 roku młody student V roku ASP Piotr Rzeczkowski. Jesus finds himself ministering to several thousand people ( five thousand men, not counting women and children ), but rather than sending everyone on their way at day s end as his disciples suggest, Jesus first challenges his friends ( there is no need for them to go away; give them some food yourselves ), and when the disciples balk at this, Jesus takes the five loaves and two fishes on hand, says a blessing, and gives the food to his disciples to distribute. As Matthew tells the story, They all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up the fragments left over twelve wicker baskets full. The end. I had a priest tell me years back that as far as the Sunday readings go, typically the first text (from the Old Testament) connects in some thematic way with the Gospel, while the second text (from the New Testament) is typically more of a stand alone entry. This certainly applies today, for thus says the Lord in the first reading from Isaiah, All you who are thirsty, come to the water, and the next few verses reiterate the same message. As with the Matthew passage, Isaiah s text is about God s bounty and abundance. By comparison, the second reading from Paul is about the depths of God s love for us. I suppose some might connect the three readings together, but clearly the Old Testament text and the Gospel text directly speak the same language. Food, at least metaphorical food, seems to be theme of the day. OK. But another good man a deacon, this time told me Copyright 2014 by John B. Well, immediately before today s Gospel, Scripture tells of the death of John the Baptist at Herod s hand. Herodias daughter perfoms a dance for Herod. He s so delighted by it, he offers her anything. Prompted by her mother, the daughter asks for John s head on a platter. Herod delivers. The disciples bury the corpse and tell Jesus what s gone down. As today s reading begins, then, Jesus is trying to get away from the crowds by withdrawing in a boat to a deserted place. And immediately after today s Gospel, Christ s quest for quietude continues. Here, he made the disciples get into the boat and precede him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. After doing so, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. Interesting Jesus loved the Baptist, and news of his cousin s execution prompts our Lord to get away by himself. As the passage explains, though, he can t, because the crowds heard of this and followed him on foot from their towns. And then, When Jesus disembarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, and he cured their sick. So I m thinking the message here isn t so much about food and abundance as it is about ministering to others in need, come the opportunity. Even when or perhaps especially when this doesn t sync with our plans for the day. You know. Just like Jesus did. All the time. The end.
