ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY The Silesian University of Technology is one of the leading universities in Poland. It is a modern technical university with over 65-year -long tradition in the field of didactics and research, which at present educates about 28 600 students. The didactic, scientific and research activities are run in modern laboratories and lecture halls by highly qualified academic staff. The university employs over 1935 teaching staff including ~330 professors and ~200 DSC degree holders. The following documents must be submitted to the International Mobility Office: Student Application form, Learning Agreement, Transcript of Records, English certificate confirming skills at B2 level (at least) English certificate should contain following data: - full student s name and surname, - information about English level, - obtained score from test, - date of received English level. - name and surname issuing person/ institution/school/ center, - position of issuing person/ institution/ school/ center, - signature and official stamp of person/ institution/ school/ center, - date of issue the certificate, - use headed paper of issuing person/ institution/ school/ center. We prefer to get English certificate from School of Foreign Languages (private or public)/ university unit or Centre for Foreign Languages. Others, such as: certificate from Relations Office or recommendation letter (made by academic teacher) are not sufficient. Accommodation form. Take into account that only a set of complete documents are considered by our coordinators. Additionally, applications should be filled in on a computer and printed double-sided. All the necessary forms are available on the website of the International Mobility Office, in the section download files. Application deadlines: Winter semester/ whole academic year 30/06 Spring semester 15/12 Completed documents should be sent by your institution or yourself to the IMO: International Mobility Office of Silesian University of Technology 2A Akademicka street 44-100 Gliwice, Poland After receiving all required application documents by the International Mobility Office, the Departmental Exchange Coordinator will check your Learning Agreement to see whether the courses or the project you wish to take at the SUT are available; whether 4 5
your acquired knowledge is sufficient for participation in the desired courses/project. You ll be accepted or not, depending on whether you meet the enrolment criteria for the courses and/or the project that you wish to take. You will be notified of the decision by a letter of acceptance or rejection sent to you by the IMO. After being accepted as an exchange student, signed forms are sent back to the student s home university. Please address any questions relating to courses or other academic matters to our Departmental Exchange Coordinator. General information, such as formalities, accommodation, Orientation Days, etc., can be obtained by contacting the International Mobility Office. ACADEMIC CALENDAR The academic year begins on the1 st of October and finishes at the end of June/ beginning of July. It is divided into two semesters, 15 weeks each: the winter semester: October mid February, Christmas holidays - about ten days. The winter examination session usually lasts two or three weeks, beginning in late January; the summer semester: mid February June/ July, Easter break: one week. The summer examination session usually lasts two or three weeks, beginning in the middle of June. Summer holidays last for three months from the beginning of July to the end of September; but only for those who passed all exams during the summer examination session. Students who did not succeed must retake the exam(s) in September. The curriculum is divided into lectures, practical classes, tutorials, laboratory classes and seminars. Student s rights and obligations connected with the studies are listed in the rules and regulations of the university. ACCOMMODATION Exchange students have an opportunity to be accommodated in the SUT s halls of residence which are managed by the university administration. The halls may differ from one another in standard. Double and triple rooms are the most common offer, single rooms are rarely available. Usually, on each floor there is a shared bathroom and a kitchen. Every hall has such facilities as TV room, gym, ping-pong room. Each room has Internet access. The halls are located within a 10-minute walk of the faculties. Average cost of accommodation is about 100 per month per person, depending on the room standard and the Euro rate. The rent for stay at a hall must be paid monthly, in cash (in a bank or a post office), by the 10th day of each month. Students have to fill in accommodation form. The halls of residence are situated in Gliwice, Katowice (the of Transport and the of Materials Science and Metallurgy) and in Zabrze (the of Organization and Management). Internet access In case of any problems with the Internet connection the Erasmus students should contact an administrator, a Polish student who lives in a particular hall. Private rent If the room standard does not meet your expectations you may rent a flat/room in the city. The prices for renting a flat/ room depend mainly on its location and its standard. The International Mobility Office does not help students to find a flat. Hall of residence deposit Students who would like to be accommodated in a university hall of residence are obligated to pay a deposit (refundable) 350 EUR per person (only in EUR). Payment options are the following: bank transfer (the account number will be provided), cash payment at the International Mobility Office, not later than 7 days after student s arrival. The deposit is refunded by the IMO upon check out. It is given back in cash (paid out at the IMO). When coming back to your home country don t forget to inform the IMO and the head of hall about it in order to account for the money. Check-in procedure The procedure starts after you arrive in Gliwice. For the check-in you will need: 1 photo valid passport or ID card. The procedure takes place at the hall of residence office located on the ground floor. The head of the hall of residence will take your travel document in order to register your temporary stay. You will get it back as soon as possible. While entering the hall you should always show your Resident Card provided during the check-in. 6 7
HOW TO GET TO GLIWICE The most convenient way to get to Gliwice is a plane connection. The nearest airport is located in Katowice-Pyrzowice (max 1 hour by car). You may also book tickets to: Wrocław airport about 2 hours by train to Gliwice, Kraków airport 2,5 hours by train to Gliwice, 1,5 h by car Warszawa airport 4-5 hours by train to Gliwice. The International Mobility Office arranges a pick-up service from Katowice-Pyrzowice, Krakow-Balice (for a group of students) and a bus station located in the Upper-Silesia region. For the exchange students it s free of charge. If you choose other airports, the International Mobility Office will instruct you how to get to Gliwice. If you arrive at Warszawa International Airport Okęcie (also known as Fryderyk Chopin Airport) your journey will be a little bit longer. In order to get from the airport to the main railway station in Warsaw you can either take a licensed taxi (more comfortable but expensive) or the bus No 175 (your destination is Warsaw Central Railway Station, in Polish: Dworzec Warszawa-Centralna). The bus stop and the taxi rank are in front of the airport entrance/exit. You can go directly to Gliwice by the express trains (IC, TLK). Other trains such as a fast train InterRegio go only to Katowice (the capital of the Upper-Silesia region) and there you have to take a train which goes to Gliwice. There you can take a taxi that will take you directly to the particular hall of residence (about a 10-minute ride). The International Mobility Office organizes a pick-up service for the exchange students twice during their stay: at arrival, at departure. In order to be picked up a student has to fill in an Arrival/ Departure form, giving needed details. HEALTH INSURANCE Students from EU/EEA countries staying temporarily on the territory of Poland are entitled to free health care on the basis of the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or, in particular cases, on the basis of a special certificate. You ll receive free health care services, necessary on medical grounds, from health care providers who have concluded contracts for health services with the National Health Fund (NFZ). The information about health care providers who have concluded contracts with the NFZ is available in the competent regional branch offices of the NFZ. Students from non-eu/eea countries should purchase accident insurance in their home country before departure. In the case of the ISIC or Euro<26 card, insurance is included in the card and it is not necessary to buy another one unless you want to increase its scope or value. According to the state health regulations, foreigners have to pay for each medical consultation. The cost is then reimbursed by the health insurance company. So don t forget to take an invoice after a medical consultation. CHECKLIST You have to keep these things in mind before your departure to Poland: Did you get Letter of Acceptance? Do you need a visa? Do you have valid ID card/ passport? Do you know the address to the hall of residence? Does your health insurance is valid in Poland? Do you need passportsize photographs? Do you have enough cash money for the very beginning? Did you inform the International Mobility Office about your arrival? Do you have a Mentor? ARRIVAL AND FORMALITIES Exchange students are requested to inform the International Mobility Office about their arrival day as it is very important information to us. Firstly, you have to contact the International Mobility Office to do some formalities. Exchange students are asked to bring the following documents: valid ID card/ passport, health insurance/ policy. Registration No later than 2 months after arrival, students apply for a temporary residence permit. For stays of up to 3 months no legalization of stay will be necessary. For stays exceeding 3 months, an EU student will have to obtain a temporary residence permit (in Polish: Karta pobytu obywatela UE). In the case of students, the residence permit is issued for one year. This document will be issued by the Department of Citizens Affairs of the Regional Administration Office (in Polish: Urząd Wojewódzki). Students who have received visa for the whole period of their stay in Poland are not obligated to apply for Residence Permit. Required documents: A copy of your travel document valid passport or ID card; Health insurance; The official letter of acceptance from the university with information about the planned period of study; A declaration about sufficient resources to cover the subsistence costs in Poland or credit card or bank statement; Application Form (in Polish: Wniosek o zezwolenie na pobyt); Confirmation of temporary residence (in Polish: potwierdzenie zameldowania na pobyt czasowy,). The International Mobility Office will help students to prepare necessary documents and obtain the residence permit. 8 9
STUDENT ID CARD After arrival you may apply for a student ID card (legitymacja studencka) which entitles to get discounts on: tram/buses, PKP trains, cinema, theatre, museum, certain concerts, certain pizzerias. Students below the age of 26 are entitled to reduced fares but they are required to present a valid Student Identity Card. For instructions how to get a student ID card go to a relevant Dean s Office. POLISH LANGUAGE COURSE During each semester exchange students have a possibility to attend the Polish Language Course which takes place in the main university campus in Gliwice. It s free of charge for the exchange students (with the exception of books/ study materials). That s not everything! We are always open to new ideas and initiatives. We encourage and recommend that you should take part in this event which usually starts before each semester. During the orientation days students can learn more about Poland, Gliwice and the SUT. This is also a great opportunity to visit Silesia, meet other exchange students and ESN members. Detailed programme of the Orientation Days will be provided. Join us! ERASMUS STUDENT NETWORK IN GLIWICE ESN SUT Gliwice is a student organization at the Silesian University of Technology (SUT) in Gliwice. We are a group of open-minded, sociable, very inventive and full of positive energy students who guide and welcome you gladly. Most of us had already been exchange students so we know how foreigners feel in a new environment. Our main aim is to make your stay as easy and enjoyable as possible! We guide you from the very beginning (e.g. pick up exchange students from airport), accompany you during your whole stay in Gliwice and discover Poland with you. Each of incoming exchange students has their own MENTOR - a Polish student who you can always ask for information or help. They will be with you till the last day of your stay :-) Our goal is also to integrate exchange students. We organize a lot of events such as thematic parties ( Taste of Poland, Crazy Hat Party and many more). Those of you who are more interested in sports will not be disappointed because we also organize numerous sports events (e.g. football matches, paintball). If you are into culture - we have got a Cinema Project for you, with good films from different countries. We do not forget about avid travellers. Our trips are the best way to discover Poland from young people s point of view and to make friendships among both Polish and foreign students. By participating in the Tandem Programme you may be the one who can teach others your mother tongue. MENTORING PROGRAMME Each Erasmus student has his/her mentor (a Polish student) who helps with all kinds of daily issues. This is also a wonderful opportunity for the students to get familiar with each other s culture, history and traditions. PRACTICAL INFORMATION MEDICAL SERVICE Facilities of the health care providers are marked with the logo of the NFZ: Primary health care comprises examination and consultation by a general practitioner (GP; in Polish: LEKARZ PIERWSZEGO KONTAKTU). A doctor may also refer you to diagnostic tests, to a specialist or to a hospital. Dispensaries are open from Monday to Friday, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. After 6 p.m. on workdays, as well as on Saturdays, Sundays and on holidays 24-hour-care is provided by health units which have concluded contracts for this kind of services. They comprise 10 11
out-patient care and home visits in case a patient s condition is serious. Addresses and telephone numbers of health units providing 24-hour-care are available in health care dispensaries. Medical Consultation Go to a doctor (GP) who has a contract with the NFZ. Remember to make a morning appointment in person, as later you may not be registered. During registration at the reception of the Medical Centre (PRZYCHODNIA LEKARSKA) you are asked to present: valid ID card, health insurance card (or translated into Polish replacement certificate). To get treatment by a specialist you need a referral of a doctor (GP) who practises within the health care system. No referral is required to the following specialists: obstetrician, dentist, dermatologist, venereologist, oncologist, eye specialist, psychiatrist, and for the following persons: suffering from tuberculosis, infected with HIV, war invalids and persecuted persons, addicted to alcohol, stupefacients and psychoactive substances - in case of addiction treatment. Also in case of a sudden illness, accident, injury, intoxication or life threat you will receive necessary medical benefits without a referral. To get a hospital treatment you need a doctor s referral. In case of a sudden illness, accident, injury, intoxication or life threat you will receive necessary medical benefits without a referral. Go to a hospital which has a contract with the NFZ and show your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or a translated into Polish replacement certificate. During the stay in a hospital, operations, diagnostic tests and medicines are provided free of charge. Transportation to a hospital In case of an accident, injury, childbirth, sudden illness or sudden deterioration of the state of health call an ambulance (dialling 999 or 112) or go directly to a hospital, in particular to an accident and emergency department (SOR). Ambulance transport in such cases is free of charge. Show your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or a translated into Polish replacement certificate. Get medicines A prescription can be issued by a doctor who practises within the health care system or a doctor who does not practise within this system, but has concluded a contract with the Fund authorizing him to issue prescriptions. Show your prescription and your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or a translated into Polish replacement certificate in a pharmacy. Prescribed medicines can be purchased: for a lump-sum price (in the case of basic medicines - 3,20 zł and in the case of magistral preparations - 5 zł); for 30 or 50% of the price of a medicine (in the case of supplementary medicines); for a full price - in the case of medicines which are not included in the reimbursed drugs list. Details of some post offices in Gliwice are given below: the Central Post Office (8 Dolnych Wałów street) is open 8:00-20:00 and on Saturdays 8:00-13:00; next post office which is located close to the city centre is situated next to the Railway Station ( 14 Bohaterów Getta Warszawaskiego street); department store GCH 52a Zwycięstwa street, on the first floor is open Monday- Friday 10:00-18:00, on Saturday 9:00-12:00. Smaller branch post offices are daily open from 8:00 to 16:00 or 17:00. TELEPHONE For long distance call within Poland dial a regional code (32 for Upper Silesia) and a phone number. For calls from Poland dial 00, country code and the rest of the number. If you phone from a mobile phone use + instead of 00. For calls to Poland dial 00 (or + for mobiles), a country code (48 to Poland), a regional/local code and the right number. You can buy a STARTER (a pre-paid card) to your mobile in a kiosk or an operator s shop. In Poland we have 4 major mobile operators: Orange T-mobile Plus GSM Play Pre-paid services are quite popular among exchange students as there is no need to sign a contract with a particular mobile operator. 12 13
BANK If you want to open a bank account in Gliwice we recommend that you should go to the city centre (Zwycięstwa street.). You can find a few banks there. In order to open a bank account, you will need your passport and an official document issued by the International Mobility Office confirming the status of Erasmus student. Another possibility is to open a bank account in your home country and use your credit card for withdrawing money in Poland. Cash machines are at your disposal all around the city. Mastercard and Visa are popular in Poland. Besides, debit or credit cards also work here. Most banks are open from 9:00 to 17:00 from Monday to Friday, some are open on Saturdays from 9:00 to 13:00. Exchange Office To exchange your money into PLN you can go to a bank or Exchange Office (KANTOR) as it s the most popular and convenient place for such transactions. Kantors are situated in Zwycięstwa street and in shopping malls. They are open from Monday to Friday, 10:00 18:00, on Saturdays from 9:00 13:00. In the shopping malls kantor s opening hours are longer. Money The official currency in Poland is the Polish Złoty (PLN/ZŁ). Denominations are: bank notes to the value of 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 zł, and coins to the value of 1,2,5,10,20,50 groszy and 1,2,5 złoty. Shopping There are several shopping malls in Gliwice (Auchan, Tesco Extra, Arena, Forum). The nearest is FORUM, situated in front of the main railway station in the city. The biggest shopping mall is called SILESIA CITY CENTRE and it is located in Katowice. To get there you should take a train or bus No840 or No 870 to Katowice, then take a tram No 6, 11, or 13 from the city centre. Shops are open daily, Monday to Friday from 7:00 to 16:00, Saturdays from 9:00 to 13:00 Supermarkets, such as Tesco, Lidl, Carrefour, Biedronka are open from 7:00 to 20:00 or 22:00, Monday to Sunday. The supermarkets that are the nearest to the university campus are Lidl and Tesco. Around the city, there are also numerous food markets where you can purchase food, good quality vegetables and fruit. Emergency numbers: 997 Police (Policja) 999 Ambulance Service (Pogotowie Ratunkowe) 998 Fire Brigade (Straż Pożarna) 112 Emergency telephone (Police+ambulance+fire brigade) number accessible from both mobile phones and a land line; after a short interview about the nature of the emergency, the operator will connect you to the relevant emergency service. Pharmacy Pharmacy (APTEKA) you may find in the city centre and the shopping malls. Pharmacies which are open 24/7: 16 Zygmunta Starego street. (city centre), In FORUM, 1 Lipowa street., 4 Zwycięstwa street. (city centre), CITO, 26 Górnych Wałów street (city centre). TRANSPORT Buses Gliwice has a good bus network. The service is provided by KZK GOP (Municipal Transport Union of the Upper Silesia Industrial District - www.kzkgop.pl, English version http://rozklady.kzkgop.pl/index.php?co=rozklady). Ticket prices are the following: Within the limits of one city: 1,60/3,20 PLN Within the limits of two neighbouring cities: 1,90/3,80 PLN Within the limits of three or more cities: 2,40/4,80 PLN You may use the same ticket for buses and trams. A ticket should be validated as soon as you get on a bus/tram. Tickets are available at kiosks or in buses/trams. We recommend that you should buy a monthly ticket (~128 PLN - regular fare; 64 PLN for students under 26) or quarterly ticket much useful and a reasonably cheap way of travelling. Student below the age of 26 are entitled to reduced fares, but they are required to present a valid Student Identity Card (legitymacja studencka), otherwise you will be fined. The charge for carrying luggage or an animal is 2,80 PLN (which does not apply to holders of monthly or quarterly travel cards carrying luggage that exceeds the dimension limit or an animal). Long-distance transport services in the Silesian region are provided by PKS (Road Transport Company) coaches. Ticket offices at coach stations in Częstochowa, Katowice and Bielsko-Biała are open daily (except during Easter and Christmas) between 5:30 and 21:00. Trains The train timetable is available on the following web site: www.pkp.pl In Poland we have several types of trains and in the Upper-Silesian region there are 3 companies: - PRZEWOZY REGIONALNE (PR) Regio is the slowest and the cheapest train; InterRegio has better standard and is faster than the Regio. - PKP INTER CITY (IC) TLK is a fast train, a little bit more expensive. The standard (the 1st and the 2nd class) and the comfort of travel are similar to the InterRegio s; EX/IC express train is the most expensive. The standard (1 st and 2 nd class) and the comfort of travel are the most favourable; you need to make a reservation beforehand. - KOLEJE ŚLĄSKIE (KS) train operator in the Upper-Silesia region. 14 15
Taxi Taxis are rather expensive. Use licensed taxis with numbers on the cars, they are the cheapest. Taxi ranks are situated around the city. Climate Continental; moderate and changeable weather: Autumn - in October you can admire beautiful, colourful autumn, we call it The golden Polish autumn ; when it s sunny it can be really nice and warm; unfortunately, very often it rains a lot and it can get really cold; Winter - frosty and snowy; the coolest months are January and February with temperatures below zero; sometimes even minus 20 degrees Celsius; Spring daily temperatures at that time range from 5 to 15 degrees Celsius; Summer - the average temperature amounts to 19 degrees Celsius but there are sultry days with thermometer peaking as high as 30 degrees; usually it is sunny, however, sometimes it rains; More about the weather conditions and climate are available on the website of the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management: www.imgw.pl Time Poland is in the Central European (CET) time zone (GTM plus one hour). When it s 12:00 in Warszawa it s 05:00 in Chicago, 06:00 in New York, 11:00 in London, 12:00 in Paris and Berlin and 19:00 in Tokyo. Polish summer time (GTM plus two hours) starts and ends on the last Sundays of March and October. CUSTOMS AND TRADITIONS Fat Thursday (Tłusty Czwartek) That s the last Thursday before the Lent. On that day we buy and eat lots of doughnuts, mainly with jam filling. Shrove Tuesday (Ostatki) The last day of Carnival, when people party before the beginning of the Lent Ash-Wednesday (Popielec) - beginning of the Lent April Fool s Day (Prima Aprilis) The day of tricks and pranks. Easter (Wielkanoc) Holy Saturday (Wielka Sobota) people bring baskets with their Easter food to church for blessing, then, on Sunday we eat it for Easter breakfast. Children s Day (Dzień Dziecka 1 st of June) Corpus Christi (Boże Ciało) The day when religious processions are organized across Poland, led by children scattering flower petals. St. John s night (Sobótka 21 st -22 nd of June) People gather in the late evening to observe wreaths decorated with burning candles floating on the water. All Saints Day (Wszystkich Świętych 1st of November) On this day people go to cemeteries to light candles and pray for those who passed away. St. Andrew s Day (Andrzejki 29 th of November) The evening of fortune-telling games. We pour hot and melted wax into a bowl of water through a key hole and try to read our fate from the shape of the congealed wax. St. Nicholas Day (Mikołajki 6 th of December) The day when we give and get small gifts from Santa Clause. Christmas Eve (Wigilia 24 th of December) Probably the most celebrated holiday in Poland. During the supper we eat typical Christmas dishes such as beetroot soup served with small dumplings, pickled herring, dumplings with cabbage and mushrooms, fried carp, and for dessert, a poppy seed cake and gingerbread. POLISH CUISINE Polish cuisine was influenced by many cooking traditions and is very diversified; each region has its own specific dishes. Our specialities are excellent smoked meats, especially the sausage. An important part of the main Polish meal of the day is a soup. The most popular are: beetroot soup (barszcz), sour barley soup (żurek) - rye-flour cooked with mushrooms and served with potatoes, diced sausages and hard-boiled eggs, tomato soup (pomidorowa), chicken soup (rosół) served with noodles mainly. Meat is prepared in many ways. The classic one is a pork chop (kotlet schabowy) fried pork loin chop coated in breadcrumbs and served with potatoes and cabbage. Hunter s strew (bigos) is very popular. It is made of brined cabbage with a variety of meats, smoked meats and mushrooms. Don t forget to taste dumplings (pierogi) with different filling type, e.g. with cheese and potatoes (ruskie), with meat, mushrooms and cabbage, and sweet ones - with bilberries and sugar. Potato pancakes (placki ziemniaczane) are also very good. They are made from grated potatoes, deep-fried. One of the traditional Silesian Sunday meals is the Silesian roulade (a beef roll stuffed with bacon, pickled cucumber and mustard) served with dumplings and cooked red cabbage. For dessert try delicious cheesecake (sernik), poppy-seed cake (makowiec) and gingerbread (piernik). SILESIA IN SHORT The Silesia (ŚLĄSKIE) is situated in the southern part of Poland and it is the most industrial region in the whole country. It has excellent connections with the trans European transport network. The unique economic position of the Silesia results from the fact that it is the most industrialized and urbanized region in Poland. Back in time it was a mining, iron and steel industry centre. Nowadays, the Silesia has been developing dynamically. Electronic, chemical and brewing industries as well as car manufacturers (Fiat and General Motors) operate in the area. The capital of the Upper-Silesia is Katowice. 18 19
Apart from economic aspects, Silesia is a unique region due to its natural environment. So do not hesitate to visit the land of immaculate nature, rich cultural life and varied landscape. THE CITY OF GLIWICE Gliwice stands out among the cities and towns in the Upper-Silesia. It was founded in the 13 th century even today we can admire the original medieval layout of the Old Town streets and the charming Market Square in the city centre. At the same time it is a thriving and modern centre of economy, commerce and science. Interesting places: Ruins of the Municipal Theatre, Market Square and Town Hall, Gliwice Radio Station, Municipal Palm House, Museum in Gliwice Artistic Casting Department, Museum in Gliwice the Caro Villa, Museum in Gliwice the Piast Castle, Airfield and Gliwice Aero Club.
