God bless our Second Graders who celebrated the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time on Wednesday. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION What would you say is the oldest, most frequently sung, most translated, most memorized, most beloved song text in the Christian world today? An astute and surprising answer might be the Gloria, Glory to God in the Highest. In three weeks time, the Lenten fast will begin, and the Gloria, sung at the beginning of Sunday Mass, will be silenced. It is an heirloom from a treasury of hymns spun from the songs of praise on the lips of Mary, Elizabeth, and Zachary. We move in the prayer from the song of the angels at the first Christmas, to the praise of God, and to a final plea to Christ to continue and complete his work in us. For nearly 1500 years, the singing of the Gloria has been a sign of the festive quality of a particular Mass. From the beginning it was a song of the people, not of the choir or clergy. These last few Sundays of winter Ordinary Time allow us a chance to savor the hymn and give ourselves over to the chorus. How is the song of praise arising from your pew? If you claim the song as yours, its absence from Lent will be more striking, and its return at Easter will cheer your heart. Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.

February 16, 2003 Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Three As members of the parish faith community, it is our responsibility to remember both in concrete and spiritual ways those who cannot celebrate with us each week because they are ill. Those who are sick in turn, remember all of us daily in their prayers and in their sufferings. We experience many blessings because of their remembering us. And so... please remember in your prayers: Joseph Balicki Timothy Benson Albin Bilinski Frank Bisceglie Stephanie Bosco Gabriella Bragagnolo Alba Jennie Burroughs Benito Cabanin Claudio Clemente Bishop Edwin Conway Anna Diks Lillian Dziedzic Joseph Gagliano Fatima Gomez Rocco Greco Ben Guttiula Mary Hain Judith Hodolitz Mary Ann Johansen Catherine Keeler Stanley Kochniarczyk Helen Kosirog Tad Koziol James Lamberti Sam LoDolce Netta Lohrmann Eleanor Loscuito Elizabeth Ann Maher Susan Maher Francesco Mangialardo Mary Martin Estelle Toots McGuigan Emilia Moreno Dan Oliver, Jr. Timothy Rajski Sophie Regner Alicia Schippits Infant Cameron Scott Lenore Simzyk Estelle Stybur Minerva Watson Anne Wickman Bruno Wojcik Bulletin reminder: All notices for the February 23rd bulletin need to be in the rectory no later than 9 a.m. on Monday, February 17th. You may drop your bulletin notices off at the rectory in an envelope labeled bulletin or you may fax them to 622-5903. The e-mail address for bulletin notices is bulletin@saintferdinand.org. Our Financial Support of St. Ferdinand Parish Last weekend the people of St. Ferdinand Parish donated $14,791.94 in the regular offertory collection. In addition, we received $373.14 at the First Friday Mass (PL) on February 7 th. Thank you for your stewardship in support of our mission and many ministries. Daniel P. Costigan, Parish Business Manager COLLECTION: ENVELOPES: LOOSE MONEY: TOTAL Donated: BUDGET: GOAL$15,000 Amount Over (Under) February 8-9, 2003 $10,109.00 $4,682.94 $14,791.94 ($208.06) A Few Words About Our Missalettes & Hymnals... You may have noticed that we recently reduced the number of (English) Missalettes and Hymnals to one set per holder in the pews of the Church and Chapel. There are now 880 copies between the two worship spaces. This was done to save costs and also wear and tear on the pew book holders. There are plenty of missal sets for everyone, as our Masses in the English language generally range from 100 to 500 people at a particular liturgy. We realize that this may cause an occasional and slight inconvenience, but by reducing this expense gradually over the past couple of years we are saving over $2,000 per year since 2000-01. You are encouraged to use the books from whatever holder you find them in, but we ask that you return them to same book rack after Mass. Also, in consideration of others, please do not take a hymnal or missalette out of the blue set covers or take one home. Further, we ask that you please put the blue covered sets on one side of the rack and double up the paperback hymnals in Polish. Please do not force the hymnals into the racks. This causes damage and repair costs. The blue set fits easily on one side and the two Polish hymnals can be placed on the other side. Finally, we thank the many daily Mass volunteers, Scouts and school students who help us change the missalettes a few times a year and tidy up every week. We are grateful to all who take a moment after Mass to return the books to their proper place.

Page Six Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 16, 2003 Druga Tajemnica œwiat³a Jezus na weselu w Kanie Odbywa³o siê wesele w Kanie Galilejskiej... A kiedy zabrak³o wina, Matka Jezusa mówi do Niego: <Nie maj¹ ju wina>... Rzek³ do nich Jezus: <Nape³nijcie st¹gwie wod¹... Zaczerpnijcie teraz i zanieœcie staroœcie weselnemu>... Jezus objawi³ chwa³ê swoj¹ i uwierzyli w Niego Jego uczniowie (J 2,1.3.7.8.11). February 16, 2003 Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Nine Our Holy Father explains that of the many mysteries of our Lord s life, there are only a few that we contemplate as we pray the Rosary. He feels that in order to more fully emphasize the Christ centeredness of the Rosary, it would be suitable to make additions to the Mysteries of the Rosary to which we are accustomed. These additions would encompass the time of our Lord s public ministry between his Baptism and his Passion. The addition of these Mysteries of Light would cause the Rosary to more fully reflect Gospel. This addition of these new mysteries, without prejudice to any essential aspect of the prayer's traditional format, is meant to give it fresh life and to enkindle renewed interest in the Rosary's place within Christian spirituality as a true doorway to the depths of the Heart of Christ, ocean of joy and of light, of suffering and of glory. The Mysteries of Light 1st - The Baptism of Jesus The Baptism in the Jordan is first of all a mystery of light. Here, as Christ descends into the waters, the innocent one who became sin for our sake (cf. 2Cor 5:21), the heavens open wide and the voice of the Father declares him the beloved Son (cf. Mt 3:17 and parallels), while the Spirit descends on him to invest him with the mission which he is to carry out. 2nd - The wedding of Cana Another mystery of light is the first of the signs, given at Cana (cf. Jn 2:1-12), when Christ changes water into wine and opens the hearts of the disciples to faith, thanks to the intervention of Mary, the first among believers. Rev. David J. Cortesi and Daniel P. Costigan, ex officio. Pray the Rosary ~ Pray for Peace St. Ferdinand Parish 3rd - The proclamation of the Kingdom of God The preaching by which Jesus proclaims the coming of the Kingdom of God, calls to conversion (cf. Mk 1:15) and forgives the sins of all who draw near to him in humble trust (cf. Mk 2:3-13; Lk 7:47-48): the inauguration of that ministry of mercy which he continues to exercise until the end of the world, particularly through the Sacrament of Reconciliation which he has entrusted to his Church (cf. Jn 20:22-23). 4th - The Transfiguration The mystery of light par excellence is the Transfiguration, traditionally believed to have taken place on Mount Tabor. The glory of the Godhead shines forth from the face of Christ as the Father commands the astonished Apostles to listen to him (cf. Lk 9:35 and parallels) and to prepare to experience with him the agony of the Passion, so as to come with him to the joy of the Resurrection and a life transfigured by the Holy Spirit. 5th - The institution of the Eucharist A final mystery of light is the institution of the Eucharist, in which Christ offers his body and blood as food under the signs of bread and wine, and testifies to the end his love for humanity (Jn 13:1), for whose salvation he will offer himself in sacrifice. The Mysteries of the Rosary JOYFUL on Monday and Saturday. SORROWFUL on Tuesday and Friday. GLORIOUS on Wednesday and Sunday.
