July 20, 2013 Sixteenth Ordinary Sunday Page Four Sacraments Seven sacraments form the framework of Catholic spirituality. In a sacrament, Jesus himself acts in and through the ritual, offering new life, forgiving sins, giving his own body and blood, healing, uniting, consecrating. Through the work of the Holy Spirit, the transforming grace of Christ s actions is poured into the hearts of those participating. So a sacrament does more than just symbolize spiritual reality it actually makes that spiritual reality present at the place and time the sacrament is celebrated. One term used to describe this reality is efficacious the sacraments effect change in us and in the world because of God s power, not our own. Just participating in a sacrament doesn t mean you will be changed. You must be prepared for an actively participate in the sacraments if the grace given by God in them is to have an effect in your life. This inner attitude and readiness on our part is called our disposition. With this in mind, we can now understand the definition of sacraments provided by the Catechism of the Catholic Church (#1131): The sacraments are efficacious signs of grace, instituted by Christ and entrusted to the Church, by which divine life is dispensed to us. The visible rites by which the sacraments are celebrated signify and make present the graces proper to each sacrament. They bear fruit in those who receive them with the required dispositions. Grace is a word that is frequently associated with the sacraments. Grace is the religious name we give to the free and undeserved gifts we receive from God. Grace is the experience we have of being loved as a child of God. The love we receive, in all its various forms, empowers us to live lives of love ourselves, in service to God and others. The seven sacraments are divided into three groups. The first group is sacraments of initiation: Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation. The second group is sacraments of service: Matrimony and Holy Orders. And finally, the third group is sacraments of healing: Reconciliation and Anointing of the Sick. These seven sacraments are the heart of the Catholic community. Taken from The Catholic Faith Handbook for Youth by Saint Mary s Press

Page Five Sixteenth Ordinary Sunday July 20, 2013 SUMMER MISSION APPEAL Sunday, July 27 Next Sunday Missionaries from the Catholic Diocese of Nakuru, Kenya will come to our Church to speak at each Mass about many challenges their country is facing right now. The second collection will be taken up to support their pastoral and humanitarian work. Please be generous. Famine Appeal 2014: Alleviating Human Suffering The Catholic Diocese of Nakuru (CDN), Kenya, was established in 1968. Presently, the diocese is involved in pastoral care and promoting human development activities to a Catholic population of approximately 250,000 in two counties, Nakuru and Baringo. The region covered by the diocese has approximately 1.3M inhabitants. Drought is not new to Kenya. In the Northern enclaves of Baringo and East Pokot, drought is again ravaging thousands and dangerously leaving many more to be dependent on food aid. There are reports of human and livestock deaths, acute food shortage and increased migration by pastoralist communities due to depletion of pasture and water for livestock; this situation has already sparked off conflict over struggle for dwindling pasture and water resources with host communities. As a result, school drop outs have increased significantly with kids abandoning learning to become migrant herders. In our parishes, for instance, priests and nuns serve hundreds of families with the much needed food, water, and medical supplies. To supplement these efforts, we ask that you join us to pray and ease the burden for the people impacted by malnutrition and starvation. Here is our plan: Provide targeted supplementary feeding to 5,000 school going children Provide access to safe water for an estimated 50,000 individuals in pastoral and marginal agricultural areas affected by drought. Promote hygiene and sanitation for an estimated 50,000 individuals in pastoral and marginal agricultural areas affected by drought. The Quigley Scholars Program For High Schoolers Who Want to Learn More about Becoming a Priest Quigley Scholars can choose to come to either St. Joseph College Seminary or Mundelein Seminary for a monthly session from September through April. We pray together, attend Mass, have dinner and attend a faith sharing session with the college seminarians focused on considering the priesthood. Scholarships Are Available Scholars who attend Catholic high may apply for an annual $2,500 scholarship to help offset the cost of high school tuition. However, the program is open to all teens in Catholic and public high schools as well as homeschoolers at any grade level. Learn More To learn more about applying and to watch a short video, visit our website: www.quigleyscholars.org 27th Annual Polonia Walking Marian Pilgrimage August 9 10 The Annual Polonia Walking Marian Pilgrimage from Chicago to the Our Lady of Czestochowa Shrine in Merrillville, Indiana will begin on Saturday, August 9.

July 20, 2013 Sixteenth Ordinary Sunday Page Thirteen Support Staff Mrs. Zofia Mazurek, Parish Secretary Sr. Bernadetta Gościniak, Administrative Assistant Ms. Elizabeth Ceisel-Mikowska, Bulletin Editor Mr. Kamil Duda, Website Designer/Editor ON SPEEDING TICKETS, PARABLES, AND HAVING EARS So I m embarrassed to tell you this, but I got a speeding ticket in the mail the other day. I m especially embarrassed to tell you about it because I received a warning last year for going too fast in pretty much the same spot. Back then I was eastbound on Foster Avenue in the Gompers Park area early on a Saturday morning headed for a training run on the lakefront when one of those newly installed speed cameras caught me going 40 mph in a 30 mph zone. Yeah. I was passing a guy going 25 a guy who probably knew about the new set of eyes on the street and as I settled back into my lane, well, Smile, You re on Speed Zone Camera! I received the Automated Speed Enforcement Warning in the mail a few days later. With a no accident driving record for forty plus years, I was slightly annoyed at the whole thing, but at the same time, I was grateful for the first offense grace afforded to me by the City of Chicago Department of Finance. I was good for the balance of the year, remembering to observe the speed limit not only in the Gompers Park area but elsewhere. But eventually I forgot the warning and the relief I felt upon receiving it. With the grace period come and gone, my second offense cost me $35. This time I was west bound on Foster on a Saturday morning returning from a lakefront training run, and I m pretty sure the same camera caught me, albeit this time, from behind. The Automated Speed Enforcement Violation notice aka, speeding ticket said I was driving 6 10 mph over the limit (and as noted in the picture they sent me, there wasn t Liturgical Bro. I do not doubt that I was doing what the ticket said I was doing, so I sent the City of Chicago Department of Finance their money. It hurt to write the check, though, especially because of the warning I d received months earlier. All of which gives me serious pause as I consider today s Gospel passage. Here, Jesus continues to speak to the crowds in parables, and after explaining the story of the weeds in the field about how the righteous shall shine like the sun while the evildoers shall be cast into the fiery furnace, Jesus says, Whoever has ears ought to hear. Sound familiar? It should, because he says it explaining the parable of the sower in both Mark s and Matthew s Gospel (which we heard last week). He says it elsewhere in Matthew describing the greatness of the Baptist. He says it in Luke, explaining how salt that has lost its flavor is good for nothing but to be discarded. Heck. He says it eight times in the Book of Revelation alone, if I m counting them all correctly. A priest told me long ago that if Jesus says something two or three times, we really should pay attention. How about a dozen or more times? Whoever has ears ought to hear. It s warning esque, at least to my ears. I apparently didn t hear the City of Chicago s Automated Speed Enforcement Warning and it cost me $35. Father, help me to hear better everything that Jesus has to say.
