MASS INTENTIONS - INTENCJE MSZALNE Saturday, August 19, 2017 By Dr. Scott Hahn A Foreigner's Faith Most of us are the foreigners, the non- Israelites, about whom today's First Reading prophesies. Coming to worship the God of Israel, we stand in the line of faith epitomized by the Canaanite woman in today's Gospel. Calling to Jesus as Lord and Son of David, this foreigner shows her great faith in God's covenant with Israel. Jesus tests her faith three times. He refuses to answer her cry. Then, He tells her His mission is only to Israelites. Finally, he uses "dog," an epithet used to disparage non-israelites (see Matthew 7:6). Yet she persists, believing that He alone offers salvation. In this family drama, we see fulfilled Isaiah's prophecy and the promise we sing of in today's Psalm. In Jesus, God makes known among all the nations His way and His salvation (see John 14:6). At the start of salvation history, God called Abraham (see Genesis 12:2). He chose his offspring, Israel, from all the nations on the face of the earth, to build His covenant kingdom (see Deuteronomy 7:6-8; Isaiah 41:8). In God's plan, Abraham was to be the father of many nations (see Romans 4:16-17). Israel was to be the firstborn of a worldwide family of God, made up of all who believe what the Canaanite professes - that Jesus is Lord (see Exodus 4:22-23; Romans 5:13-24). Jesus came first to restore the kingdom to Israel (see Acts 1:6; 13:46). But His ultimate mission was the reconciliation of the world, as Paul declares in today's Epistle. In the Mass we join all peoples in doing Him homage. As Isaiah foretold, we come to His holy mountain, the heavenly Jerusalem, to offer sacrifice at His altar (see Hebrews 12:22-24, 28). 20th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Z BIURKA PROBOSZCZA OUR LADY OF CZĘSTOCHOWA IN HAITI The image of Black Madonna of Częstochowa, today highly respected in Haiti, was brought there by Polish mercenary soldiers hired by Napoleon to subdue the Haitian Revolution. For them it was the icon of their most beloved and honored Mother whom they always trusted. In 1802, France sent most of the disgruntled legionnaires (two demi-brigades, 5,280 strong) to Haiti to put down the Haitian Revolution. Napoleon added a Polish Legion of around 5200 to the forces sent to Saint-Domingue to fight off the slave rebellion. However, the Poles were told that there was a revolt in Saint-Domingue; upon arrival the platoon soon discovered that what was actually going on in the colony, was a rebellion of slaves fighting off their French masters for their freedom. During this time, there was a familiar situation going on back in their homeland as these Polish soldiers were fighting for their liberty from the invading Russia, Prussia and Austria that began in 1772. As hopeful as the Haitians, many Poles were seeking union amongst themselves to win back their homeland. They made advances to ally with France and joined Napoleon's army, but were distinct as the Polish unit nonetheless. The Poles had little interest or desire in supporting the French cause in the distant colonies, once again fighting against people who only desired their own independence. In Haiti there still is a popular belief that many Polish soldiers became sympathetic to the former slaves' cause and deserted the French, supporting Jean-Jacques Dessalines in significant numbers, with entire units changing sides. As a result, many Polish soldiers admired the rebels and decided to turn on the French army and join the Haitian slaves and participated in the Haitian revolution of 1804. For their loyalty and support for overthrowing the French, the Poles acquired Haitian citizenship after Haiti gained its Independence, and settled there to never return to Poland. To this day, many Polish Haitians still live in Haiti; some with blonde, blue-eyed, European features. Most settled in Cazale, La Valléede-Jacmel, Fond-des-Blancs, La Baleine, Port- Salut and Saint-Jean-du-Sud. Thus Polish Haitians are Haitian people of Polish ancestry, mostly the descendents of Polish legionnaires with Haitian citizenship. Cazale, which is a small village in Haiti about 45 miles away from Port-au-Prince in the Grand'Anse Department. It is the main center of population of the Polish community in Haiti, called La Pologne (Poland). The name Cazale, or the home of Zalewski originates from the popular Polish surname Zalewski and the Haitian Creole word for home (kay); is the home to those of Polish descent. In 1983, Pope St. John Paul II visited Haiti. He mentioned how the Polish contributed to the slave rebellion leading to Haiti's independence. Several Haitian Poles were selected from the most populous Polish areas of Haiti to attend the various ceremonies planned for the Pope's visit. Dla Boga nie ma nic niemożliwego! - mówi sam Pan Jezus szczególnie dla tych którzy mają wiarę. Pomóżmy solidarnie naszym potrzebującym braciom i siostrom, którzy sami sobie pomóc nie mogą. Gdyż są na stałe uzależnieni od alkoholu. Aby miłościwy Bóg przez naszą modlitwę i post, i nasze w tym czasie wstrzymywanie się od spożywania alkoholu zmiłował się nad nimi, i uwolnił ich od nałogu. Modlimy się też w ten sposób prewencyjnie za wszystkich ludzi którzy nie widzą zagrożenia uzależnienia się od alkoholu i spożywają go już teraz w nadmiarze.
