August 9, 2015 19th Ordinary Sunday Page Four LAUDATO SI WE ALL NEED TO CARE FOR OUR COMON HOME Pope Francis' new encyclical "Laudato Si:' On Care for Our Common Home" is addressed to "every person living on this planet." That means you. And, come to think of it, the encyclical also would apply to the astronauts living in the Interna onal Space Sta on, even though technically they're not on this planet. Excerpts from Laudato Si CHAPTER SIX -- ECCOLOGICAL EDUCATION AND SPIRITUALITY I. TOWARDS A NEW LIFESTYLE 203 203 We have too many means and only a few insubstan al ends. 203 206 When social pressure affects their earnings, businesses clearly have to find ways to produce differently. This shows us the great need for a sense of social responsibility on the part of consumers. Purchasing is always a moral and not simply economic act.[146] 208. If we can overcome individualism, we will truly be able to develop a different lifestyle and bring about significant changes in society. II. EDUCATING FOR THE COVENANT BETWEEN HUMANITY AND THE ENVIRONMENT 209 211. Only by cul va ng sound virtues will people be able to make a selfless ecological commitment. A person who could afford to spend and consume more but regularly uses less hea ng and wears warmer clothes, shows the kind of convic ons and a tudes which help to protect the environment. There is a nobility in the duty to care for crea- on through li le daily ac ons, and it is wonderful how educa on can bring about real changes in lifestyle. Educa- on in environmental responsibility can encourage ways of ac ng which directly and significantly affect the world around us, such as avoiding the use of plas c and paper, reducing water consump on, separa ng refuse, cooking only what can reasonably be consumed, showing care for other living beings, using public transport or car-pooling, plan ng trees, turning off unnecessary lights, or any number of other prac ces. 213. In the family we learn to ask without demanding, to say thank you as an expression of genuine gra tude for what we have been given, to control our aggressivity and greed, and to ask forgiveness when we have caused harm. These simple gestures of hear elt courtesy help to create a culture of shared life and respect for our surroundings. 214. It is my hope that our seminaries and houses of forma on will provide an educa on in responsible simplicity of life, in grateful contempla on of God s world, and in concern for the needs of the poor and the protec on of the environment III. ECOLOGICAL CONVERSION 216 IV. JOY AND PEACE 222 225 Inner peace is closely related to care for ecology and for the common good because, lived out authen cally, it is reflected in a balanced lifestyle together with a capacity for wonder which takes us to a deeper understanding of life. Nature is filled with words of love, but how can we listen to them amid constant noise, interminable and nerve -wracking distrac ons, or the cult of appearances? 226. We are speaking of an a tude of the heart, one which approaches life with serene a en veness, which is capable of being fully present to someone without thinking of what comes next, which accepts each moment as a gi from God to be lived to the full. 227. One expression of this a tude is when we stop and give thanks to God before and a er meals. I ask all believers to return to this beau ful and meaningful custom. That moment of blessing, however brief, reminds us of our dependence on God for life; it strengthens our feeling of gra tude for the gi s of crea on; it acknowledges those who by their labours provide us with these goods; and it reaffirms our solidarity with those in greatest need. To be con nued...

Page Five 19th Ordinary Sunday August 9, 2015 SATURDAY, AUGUST 15, 2015 SOLEMNITY OF THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY On Saturday, Catholics and many other Chris ans will celebrate the feast of the Assump on of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The significant feast day recalls the spiritual and physical departure of the mother of Jesus Christ from the earth, when both her soul and her body were taken into the presence of God. Venerable Pope Pius XII confirmed this belief about the Virgin Mary as the perennial teaching of the Church when he defined it formally as a dogma of Catholic faith in 1950. The cons tu on also cited tes monies from the early Church fathers on the subject, and described the history of theological reflec on on many Biblical passages which are seen as indica ng that Mary was assumed into heaven following her death. Although the bodily assump- on of Mary is not explicitly recorded in Scripture, Catholic tradi on iden fies her with the woman clothed with the sun who is described in the 12th chapter of the Book of Revela on. Eastern Chris ans have also tradi onally held Mary's Assump on into heaven as an essen al component of their faith. Pius XII cited several early Byzan ne liturgical texts, as well as the eighth-century Arab Chris an theologian St. John of Damascus, in his own authorita ve defini- on of her assump on. In Eastern Chris an tradi on, the same feast is celebrated on the same calendar date, although typically known as the Dormi on (falling asleep) of Mary. Eastern Catholic celebra on of the Dormi on is preceded by a two-week period of fas ng which is similar to Lent. Assump on falls on Saturday, August 15, 2015. Because it signifies the Blessed Virgin's passing into eternal life, the Assump on is the greatest of all Marian feasts and a holy day of obliga on.however, since the feast falls on a Saturday in 2015, the holy day of obliga on is abrogated in the United States and some other countries. Chris an Outreach COR The members of COR, wish to thank The Ladies of St. Ann for their generous monetary dona on to St. Ferdinand s food pantry. Because of the help we are receiving from you, and St. Ferdinand s parishioners; we are able to feed the needy of our community. Sincerely, Michael McGinniss, Director COR Sunday, August 23, 2:15 p.m. PALLIUM CELEBRATION On Sunday, August 23, Archbishop Cupich will celebrate a special 2:15 p.m. Mass, at Holy Name Cathedral, State and Superior Streets in Chicago. At this Mass, Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, Apostolic Nuncio to the United States, will invest Archbishop Cupich with the pallium that was blessed by Pope Francis at the Va can on June 29. All are invited to a end this celebra on and no ckets are required. W polskiej tradycji ludowej uroczystość w Święto Matki Bożej Zielnej liczne sanktuaria maryjne, kościoły i kaplice, wypełniają się przybyłymi wiernymi i pielgrzymami, którzy przynoszą do poświęcenia wianki zielne, bukiety kwiatów, kłosy zbóż i owoce, w szczególności w regionach wiejskich. Msze sw. w j. polskim o godz. 7:00 rano i 7:00 wieczorem. 7:00PM do kosciola. Po Mszy sw zostanie wyswietlony w sali parafialnej film, pt. "Cud nad Wisla" Scenariusz i rezyseria Krzysztof Nowak-Tyszowiecki "Cud nad Wisłą" to historyczny dokument filmowy, ukazujący wydarzenia, przyczyny i przebieg polsko-bolszewickiej wojny 1920 roku, zbudowany w całości z oryginalnych materiałów filmowych, odnalezionych w archiwach rosyjskich, polskich i brytyjskich.

August 9, 2015 19th Ordinary Sunday Page Twelve

August 9, 2015 19th Ordinary Sunday Page Thirteen I got a text message from a runner friend this past Saturday. Sara was excited because she had just completed a half-marathon in Estes Park, CO, her first race at al tude. I texted back my congrats and added that I had just logged 13 (training) miles myself. She said this was a good run, too. I didn t give her the details, because it wasn t. Not the last three miles, anyway. Yeah. That s when I fell apart and ran/walked the rest of the way home. I can t blame the weather because I started at 6:00 AM and there was s ll a touch of coolness in the lakefront air. I can t blame the humidity because it was much lower than the week before when I completed 12 solid miles. Of course, I turned it all inward. As in, maybe I m ge ng too old for this. Or maybe my general state of fitness just isn t what it used to be. Or maybe a lot of things. And then it hit me: maybe it was just the dinner I d had the night before I like to have pasta prior to a long run the next day, so this was my plan for Friday night. My sister-in-law was joining us to see our daughter play so ball, however, and not far from the diamond is a place she d heard about on TV that she really wanted to try. Taco-In -A-Bag, in Lincoln Square. I told my wife about my pasta inten ons, and while she was suppor ve ( Maybe you can find an Italian takeout place ), it was clear to me that the taco place was the primary target, especially given that we had to grab the food quickly to get to the game on me. I se led in with something called the Cuban. The guy behind the counter said it was a good choice--and it was delish--but in retrospect, I don t think its citrus-braised pork Support Staff Mrs. Zofia Mazurek, Parish Secretary Sr. Kamila Wojdyla, Administrative Assistant Ms. Elizabeth Ceisel-Mikowska, Bulletin Editor Mr. Kamil Duda, Website Designer/Editor Liturgical Bro. Reynolds (john@jrwrites.com) St. Ferdinand Parish shoulder, crispy ham, Swiss cheese, deli pickles, and Dijonnaise gave me the energy-sustaining food I needed the following morning. At least that s what I m hanging my hat on. All of which comes to mind as I consider today s readings. Look at the passage from 1 Kings. On the run from Jezebel for killing the prophets of Baal, Elijah is spent. He actually prays for death, but God sends an angel instead who brings Elijah food and drink. Get up and eat, the angel tells the prophet, else the journey will be too long for you! Elijah does, and is sustained. Fuel for the journey, you know? And conversa on around the ul mate fuel for the journey con nues in the Gospel with the Bread of Life discourse begun two weeks ago. Today, the Jews mumble, pondering Christ s declara on that he is the bread come down from heaven. Do we not know his father and mother? they say. Certainly they followed Jesus because he d given them bread, and they recalled their ancestors ea ng manna in the desert. Jesus suggests a new bread, though. I am the living bread that came down from heaven, he repeats, and whoever eats this bread will live forever Then the unthinkable: And the bread I will give is my flesh for the life of the world. This really gets them to mumbling as we ll read next week. For now, though, this bread of life gives us plen ful food for thought. Get up and eat, else the journey will be too long for you! Because at eleva on or sea level, we re all going lots further than 13 miles.
