6 ABOUT THE PROJECT
A history lesson In the old days they defended towns against a siege. Today, they are still besieged, but this time by tourists. The walls of the Lublin Castle fulfilled their military role, and, now, they serve the visitors as an observation terrace. The castle itself has become a bustling centre of culture and art. The most valuable monument in the castle is the 14 th -century royal Holy Trinity Chapel. The Kraków Gate completes the list of the city s historic symbols. Because of the conservation works, the traces of the rich history of Lublin can be easily seen again, and modern technologies allow tourists to notice and learn more than it was possible before. Interactive and friendly arranged exhibitions, numerous cultural events, traditional tours and virtual walks no wonder that history lessons in Lublin are willingly attended, and not only by students. The castle in the past and today In the Middle Ages no town could be safe without the castle walls guarding it. Lublin had them built in the 14 th century in the reign of Casimir the Great. The Lublin Castle was constructed based on the former castellany and a fortified tower, known as a keep. Over the next centuries, devastated and then reconstructed, it functioned as a prison. Since 1957 it has been the seat of the City Museum and one of the major architectural monuments in the city. 8 THIS HAS TO BE SEEN

Over the recent years, the castle buildings have undergone comprehensive conservation and renovation works, starting with the soil sub-base and the sanitary sewerage system and storm water drainage, through the storerooms with art collections and rooms for the visitors, and ending with the roof trusses. Nowadays, the castle is one of the major tourist attractions of Lublin, and its fortified tower has turned into a watch tower. THIS HAS TO BE SEEN 13

The heritage of the whole Europe The Holy Trinity Chapel is one of the most valuable preserved monuments of medieval art not only in Poland, but also throughout Europe. The magnificent Ruthenian and Byzantine fresco paintings inside the chapel were founded by Władysław Jagiełło. Their workmanship and artistic value are even more visible thanks to the installation of special lighting. The conservators have also renovated the Gothic elements of the outer facade, and secured the chancel vault, the ground floor rooms and the crypts. Finally, tourists can admire them comfortably. This is provided by a modern air conditioning system, which serves both the visitors and the building itself. 16 THIS HAS TO BE SEEN

And behind the castle... There is the Kraków Gate that makes tourists feel the medieval atmosphere, even having left the castle and the chapel. The stone and brick structure was established in the 14 th century. In the past, anyone heading from Lublin towards Kraków had to go through it. Today, the Kraków Gate leads to Lublin Old Town. Tourists are welcomed by the renovated Gothic facade and the monogram of the king, Stanisław August Poniatowski, restored at the top of the monument. 18 THIS HAS TO BE SEEN

Time travel The City Museum offers ten permanent exhibitions, which can be admired in its seat, i.e. in the castle. The latest one is the archaeological exhibition entitled In the footsteps of history. The oldest history of the Lublin Land. The attendance success (140,000 people during the first half-year) is not the work of chance - the exhibition is like a 3D adventure film. The visitors can meet face to face with a life-size hunter from the end of the Palaeolithic Age. Straight from this period we move to the Neolithic Era, and then to the Iron Age. In order not to lose their way, those wandering in the footsteps of the past are assisted by the museum s GPS a timeline suspended over the visitors heads. It includes the dates that facilitate chronology orientation, and photos of monuments typical of every period of history presented. HISTORY IN ITS MODERN VERSION 25
