August 25, 2013 21st Ordinary Sunday Page Four Family Values: How to Teach Kids Empathy E arly signs of empathy are apparent at birth. Newborns cry when they hear another infant crying, and very young babies imitate and react to the facial expressions of others. Parents are essential to taking the process further. Every time a parent responds lovingly to a baby s needs, new neural connections are made, which associate good feelings with parental care and form the basis of the ability to love and empathize. When kids are older, even with teenagers, simply listening to their problems and acknowledging their emotions lets them know they re loved. do anything. Empathetic kids are not only conscious of others feelings they can also learn to see themselves as capable of doing something to alleviate others' suffering. Praise your child when he shows concern for or comforts another child. Point out their friends feelings and suggest how they could help in some way. For instance, you might say, "Look at Tanya's face. See how sad she is? Can you think of anything that would help her feel better?" Let them know that being a good listener is also a way to help, even if they can t Be a kind person yourself. When your child sees you caring about others going out of your way to visit a sick friend, making a meal for a new family on the block, doing chores for an elderly neighbor, or helping people in need he will see this as the right way to live. Eventually children learn the grown up lesson that "Loving kindness is twice blessed; it blesses him who gives and him who receives." Empathetic people can sometimes be so sensitive to others feelings that they judge themselves harshly if they can t fill everyone s need. Don t forget to treat yourself with the kindness that you show other people. Tune into your own feelings, and don t be hard on yourself when you can t make everyone happy. Empathy includes selfforgiveness, and children learn it from you.

Registration for 1st grade and 7th grade are very important because sacramental preparation requires two year of attendance in a religious education program. Hand Carved Olive Wood Gifts from the Holy Land Proceeds benefit Catholic schools in the Holy Land. There are more than 600 Christian families living in Bethlehem and are completely dependent on carving olive wood figurines for their livelihood. The recent clashes in the Middle East have stopped the tourism industry in Bethlehem, causing most of these families serious harm in earning their living and forcing many of them to leave their homeland. Emptying the land of Christ from Christians can have tragic consequences on the Holy sites. Issam from Star of Bethlehem Group came to the United States with a mission to help those families by selling their beautiful religious hand crafts. The cost of goods goes to benefit the Christian carvers to keep them working in the spirit of our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, the profit from sales goes directly to the needy Catholic schools and clinics in the Holy Land. August 25, 2013 21st Ordinary Sunday Page Six MUSIC MINISTRY at ST. FERDINAND PARISH Girl Scout Registration for 2013 2014 It's almost time to start our new year of Girl Scouting at St. Ferdinand! Girl Scouts serves girls from Kindergarten through 12th grade, and we have served girls at St. Ferdinand from not only the parish school but several neighborhood schools as well for over 60 years. Since my arrival, a year ago July, it is my hope to establish a strong Music Ministry for St. Ferdinand s Parish. The mission of the members of the Music Ministry of St. Ferdinand s is to encourage the assembly in song and enhance the pray life of the community through beauty and joy of music. I hope to establish the following groups offer different choices for those who love to praise God through song. Cantors needed for: Saturday evening 5:00 p.m., Sunday 8:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. (Audition will be held in late August) Children/Youth Choir to sing Sunday 8:30 and 12:30PM on assigned Sundays. If you are a new scout family, or if you do not have access to the internet, you may fill out a hard copy registration form at our Parent & Girl Meeting Night on Thursday, September 5th, from 6:30 8pm in the Convent basement. All current and new scout families are expected to attend the meeting on September 5th. This is not a come and go event, so please arrive by 6:30pm so we can start promptly and finish by 8pm. Participants bringing in $35 or more in pledges, $10 for students, will receive a commemorative t shirt, pro life balloons, lunch, snacks, ice cream treats, and more. The youth group raising the most money in pledges will win a PIZZA PARTY for their group. Walkers can choose from either of two locations: North: Our Lady of Victory, 5212 W. Agatite in Chicago. We provided case management and other supportive services to 274 individuals in Lake county. Our HIV/AIDS Liaison to the Archdiocese of Chicago educated and informed parishes and individuals across Cook and Lake counties about HIV/AIDS. Help us continue to help those impacted by HIV/AIDS. The Quigley Scholars Program For High Schoolers Who Want to Learn More about Becoming a Priest Cardinal George created The Quigley Scholars Program in 2007 for high school men who want to learn more about the priesthood. Quigley Scholars are recommended by a parish priest, school and family. They are young men who like to help others, often are involved in their parish and apply themselves at school. What to Expect Scholars come to St. Joseph College Seminary for a session once a month from September through April. We pray together, attend Mass, have dinner and attend a faith sharing session with the college seminarians. Scholarships Are Available Scholars who attend Catholic high schools in the Archdiocese may also apply for a $2,500 scholarship to help offset the cost of high school tuition. However, the program is open to teens in Catholic and public high schools, as well as homeschoolers. Stanisława Kowalkowskiego jak również za naszych drogich zmarłych członków Klubu, którzy odeszli do wieczności: śp. St. Peter asks the first, "What s your religion?" The guy says, "Catholic." St. Peter reviews his records and says, "Go to Room 17, but be very quiet as you pass Room 8." The second guy steps up and Peter asks him the same question, "What s your religion?" This guy says Methodist. Peter again checks his paperwork and says, "Go to room 22, but be very quiet as you pass room 8." Finally the third guy stands before the Gatekeeper who asks a third time, What s your religion? This guy says, "Jewish," and Peter responds in like fashion as to the other two: Go to room 11, but be very quiet as you pass room 8." The Jewish guy says, "OK. I can understand there being different rooms for different religions, but why must we all be quiet when we pass room 8?" St. Peter responds The Jehovah's Witnesses are in room 8, and they think they're the only ones here. Yes, it s an old joke, but I smile every time I hear it. Or tell it. And it comes to mind as I consider today s readings. First Isaiah makes it clear that the Kingdom is for everyone. Through his prophet, the Lord puts it this way: I know their works and their thoughts, and I come to gather every nation of every language; they shall come and see my glory. This sounds pretty inclusive in general. And later, God makes it sound pretty inclusive in specific: I will set a sign among them; from them I will send fugitives to the nations: to Tarshish, Put, and Lud, Mosoch, Tubal, and Javan, to the distant coastlands that have never heard of my fame, or seen my glory, and they shall proclaim my glory among all nations. I love all of these wonderful names of far away lands, but extrapolating, I think we can feel free to put in names of other lands more familiar to us. The exact locations aren t important, of course. What s important is that the invitation to God s banquet is open to all. And this is great, but is there a catch? I mean, look at Christ s response when someone asks, Lord, will only a few be saved? He doesn t say yes, but he hints at it when he answers, Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I tell you, will attempt to enter but will not be strong enough. As I understand such things, salvation is less a goal that we can achieve than a gift that we can accept. At the same time, we must play a hand in it if Jesus himself tells us that many will not be strong enough for it. Strong enough in what way? I don t want to be one of those guys at the end who says Lord, Lord! only to hear Jesus essentially say in turn, Get lost! Concerning the whole faith/works conversation, I embrace what the Catechism says ( Believing in Jesus Christ and in the One who sent him for our salvation is necessary for that salvation ), but I don t totally discount Thomas Fuller s notion ( Good works will never save you, but you can never be saved without them ) either. Again, strong enough in what way? Yes, I grapple with these things I guess that s why we call it a faith journey and I share all of this with you now because I know I m among friends here. Just don t tell the Witnesses, OK? OK.
