Season Preview T he Western Illinois University men s basketball schedule for the 2008-09 season will include two regular-season tournaments and opponents from 10 conferences in addition to The Summit League. The Leathernecks open the regular season, Nov. 14-15, at the 100 Club Classic, hosted by Kennesaw State, then open the home schedule against Eureka, Nov. 19. Western will face Cincinnati out of the Big East and Florida State out of the Atlantic Coast Conference on the road before entering the Global Sports Classic, hosted by UNLV, Nov. 28-29. Western opens conference play at IUPUI, Dec. 6, before playing back-to-back Ohio Valley opponents Southeast Missouri State and Eastern Illinois. Big Ten team Iowa hosts Western Illinois, Dec. 27, live on ESPNU. Wrapping up the non-conference schedule against the Hawkeyes, the Leathernecks will face each conference team twice. The Summit League Tournament is scheduled for March 7-10 in Sioux Falls, S.D. Our schedule is very exciting, Western Illinois head basketball coach Jim Molinari said. It is tremendously challenging when you have the likes of Cincinnati, Florida State and Iowa in addition to The Summit League, which is loaded with veteran players this year. We also only have 10 home games, which adds greatly to the difficulty. The Coaching Staff The Leathernecks enter the 2008-09 season under first-year head coach Jim Molinari. With 28 years of experience as a Division I coach, Molinari has compiled a 223-186 career record in 14 years as a head coach. Molinari has coached in 19 postseason tournaments, including 12 NCAA Tournaments. After two years as an assistant at Big Ten Minnesota, Molinari took over seven games into the 2006-07 season as the interim head coach of the Gophers. Before Minnesota, Molinari spent 11 years as the head coach at Bradley where he totaled 174 wins, including a 22-8 season in 1995-96, and qualified for the 1996 NCAA Tournament. Just before the Braves, Molinari received his first head coaching position at Northern Illinois in 1989. He found instant success with the Huskies, only losing 17 games in his two-year stint. The Huskies won the 1991 Mid-Continent Conference (now The Summit League) championship while setting a school record for wins in a season, with a 25-6 record. Working alongside Molinari are first-year assistants Wade Hokenson (Minnesota, 2004) and Billy Wright (Bradley, 1996). Wright comes to Western with 12 years of coaching experience at the high school level, including the last two as head coach, in addition to four years of playing experience as an all-conference point guard at Bradley. Prior to Western Illinois, Hokenson served as the first assistant at Bellevue University in Nebraska for two years, helping the team to the NAIA Division II National Tournament as the No. 1 seed both seasons and landing the runner-up spot in 2008. The team won the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference regular-season title and tournament title in both 2007 and 2008 with records of 32-2 and 33-4 respectively. As a player, Hokenson was a point guard on Minnesota s basketball team from 2001-04. When building a program, I stress character, academics and winning on the court, Molinari said. These two coaches have all three of these factors in their own lives and have been in programs that have those things as well. The Returners Western Illinois returns two starters in David Nurse and David DuBois. Others returning include Ceola Clark, James Granstra, Arsenio Mims and Josh Rivers. DuBois was named to the 2007-08 Summit League All-Newcomer team as the leading rebound for Western in 10 games and the leading scorer in five with a season-best 20 points twice in the season. Nurse returns as the leading scorer in five games as well, with a career-high 26 points at Centenary. The pair combined for 28 games with double-digit scoring and four 20-plus point games. DuBois is one of only three players from the 2007-08 season to earn a start in all 30 games and combines with Nurse for a total of 1,578 minutes played. Clark returns to 2008-09 after taking a medical redshirt for the 2007-08 season. Granstra, Mims roster breakdown by class Seniors (2) David DuBois Josh Rivers Juniors (3) Quenton Kirby David Nurse Rodney Williams, Jr. Sophomores (3) James Granstra Julian Jones Arsenio Mims Freshmen (2) Ceola Clark Tommie Tyler Returning senior David DuBois grabbed the most rebounds in onethird of last season s games for Western. 8 WESTERN ILLINOIS BASKETBALL
Season Preview roster breakdown by state California Rodney Williams, Jr. Illinois Ceola Clark Arsenio Mims Minnesota James Granstra Nevada Josh Rivers Texas Quenton Kirby Tommie Tyler Wisconsin David DuBois Missouri David Nurse Julian Jones, Jr. and Rivers return with a combined 545 minutes of time in the 2007-08 season. The returners helped last year s team to the best home record since the 1998-99 season with 10 wins in Western Hall. Off the court, DuBois, Nurse, Granstra and Mims were each named to the 2008 Summit League Winter/Spring Academic All-League Team with a GPA of 3.6 or better. The Newcomers The team has also added four newcomers to the 2008-09 roster in junior college transfers Julian Jones, Jr., Quenton Kirby, Rodney Williams, Jr., and true freshman Tommie Tyler. The Guards Tyler is a 6-foot-3 true freshman from Houston, Texas, and Kirby is a 6-foot-2 junior transfer from Welmar, Texas. The pair of newcomers join Clark, DuBois, Nurse and Rivers for a total of six guards on the 2008-09 roster. The Forwards Williams, Jr., is a 6-foot-5 transfer from Los Angeles, Calif. He spent his freshman season at Kent State where he appeared in seven games before playing one season at Mt. San Jacinto College. Jones, Jr., is a 6-foot-8 sophomore added to the lineup of forwards for the 2008-09 season. Joining returners Granstra, a 6-foot-10 sophomore and Mims, at 6-foot-3, Western has four forwards on the 2008-09 roster. We are not trying to build a season; we are trying to build a program, Molinari explained. So, we are very much focused on the intangibles. I believe that you tie your goals to your values. The values of our program are going to be effort, discipline, unity, humility and the passion for being a student-athlete at Western Illinois. We will be playing this schedule with only two players that have had extensive experience (DuBois, Nurse), so we really don t know how the others will adapt to the challenges ahead. I am thrilled as we have blended the new players with the returnees and I have been pleased with the returnees overall effort and focus in every area. Guard David Nurse returns after earning 25 starts in 29 games in his first season at Western Illinois. www.wiuathletics.com 9
